00:03<jmcnaught>cryptokey: you can also use cp instead of dd. was the target the device (/dev/sdb) or a partition (/dev/sdb1)?
00:04-!-coldtobi1 [~tobi@p54BB6BE8.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has joined #debian
00:04<cryptokey>jmcnaught: It was the device. Do you mean that I can just copy the .iso onto the usb?
00:05<cryptokey>jmcnaught: You meant the debian installer and not the firmware just to be clear, right?
00:05<jmcnaught>cryptokey: yes you want to copy it to the device, not a partition. i mean the installer image.
00:05-!-landev [~quassel@91BAADHHL.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: No Ping reply in 180 seconds.]
00:05<jmcnaught>!firmware images

00:06<cryptokey>jmcnaught: No I didn't. Thanks, I'll take a look!
00:06-!-landev [~quassel@dyn-cable-customer.11.4.138.91.yetnet.ch] has joined #debian
00:06<jmcnaught>cryptokey: the official way is documented here: https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch06s04.html.en
00:07<cryptokey>jmcnaught: So are you saying that I should put the firmware on the usb differently as well as the .iso for the debian install?
00:08-!-ixti [~ixti@38.128.208.149] has joined #debian
00:08<jmcnaught>cryptokey: if you use one of the unofficial images from the link above, those installers already include the firmwares
00:08<jmcnaught>cryptokey: also it's important that you copy the image to the device, not a partition on the device (because the iso image is already partitioned)
00:08-!-coldtobi [~tobi@p5DDF0928.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:09<cryptokey>jmcnaught: So just a normal copy as I would with a gui?
00:10<jmcnaught>cryptokey: if you already have Linux, instead of dd you can use cp. for example "cp debian.iso /dev/sdb". The details are here: https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en
00:10<cryptokey>jmcnaught: I'm having an issue now that I did previously. In transmission, it is saying "Tracker gave an error. "torrent not found"". It does this for other torrent files from debian as well, but not other torrents I have running.
00:10<jmcnaught>cryptokey: it might not be a bad idea to skim over the install manual if you haven't looked at it
00:11<jmcnaught>cryptokey: there are direct download links. do you need 64-bit?
00:11<cryptokey>jmcnaught: Yes. And good point, I'll take a look
00:11<jmcnaught>cryptokey: check the "iso-cd" dir

01:16<jmcnaught>cryptokey: hmmm... that might be difficult to configure in the installer. You could try switching to a different virtual console, if wpa_supplicant is there you might be able to configure it manually

01:19<cryptokey>jmcnaught: Thank you
01:19<jmcnaught>cryptokey: things will be a little different on the installer though
01:19<jm_>or in the absence of the man pages on installation media http://manpages.debian.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=wpa_supplicant.conf
01:19<jmcnaught>ahh... good point
01:19<cryptokey>jmcnaught: Will it interfere with the gui installer?
01:20<cryptokey>I'm familiar with command line so I'll start reading up on wpa_supplicant
01:20<jmcnaught>cryptokey: configuring a network connection will not interfere with the installer

03:33<Ozymandias>Dumb question. I have a machine using jessie w/ jessie-backports. I've installed a backport with the suggested apt-get -t jessie-backports. In the future, if that package is updated in the backports repository, will I get the update through the normal apt-get update && apt-get upgrade process? Otherwise, will I only get updates to that package when I specify -t jessie-backports?

10:17<duclicsic>tiago_silva: you can install KDE application in the same way as any other on debian. apt-get install <package-name>
10:17<duclicsic>tiago_silva: you won't have to install KDE, but you will likely need a lot of components of it, these will all be installed as dependencies when you install the package you want though
10:18<duclicsic>tiago_silva: so.. "apt-get install kdeconnect"

10:23<phunyguy>Hello, is there some documentation on the steps required to get a brand new Skylake laptop working on Debian 8? I have backported kernel installed, but still having issues with wifi and 3d graphics. (System76 Lemur laptop)

10:26<phunyguy>It's possible... I pinned firmware* to backports. So I will have to double check all that. THe more important issue, however, is the 3d graphics. Gnome3 loads but is not smooth at all.

13:03<sleblanc>somiaj, it puts an icon on the desktop, and it will mount the drive when I click on it, but it does not do it automatically. I have volman installed
13:03<somiaj>sleblanc: when you click on it does it bring up this list of options, or just mount it?

13:04-!-ixti [~ixti@38.140.30.86] has joined #debian
13:05<sleblanc>somiaj, I am setting up a machine as a radio automation appliance, so I need the drives to mount automatically, or at least show a prompt to the operator that allows them to mount it
13:05<somiaj>so all you want is automounting. I see.
13:05<sleblanc>somiaj, I would prefer a prompt, though
13:06<somiaj>sleblanc: http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/using-removable-media#storage_tab -- there seem to be some options there, but I don't see any that will give you a prompt

13:07<sleblanc>Brigo, the icon is an additional step that is counter intuitive. The app I am setting up is not aware of removable drives, so it can't mount them (or even display them)
13:08<sleblanc>So if the user has to click on the icon, they would have to do this: "Click on the removable drive's icon; Close the window; Go to app; Locate your files in ~/Drives/<drive name>"
13:08<somiaj>yea I noly see an option there to automount. I do see prompts but they seem to be for autorun or dvd/cd

15:45<logg>heyo. trying to install debian from the free software cd, but I need to install some nonfree firmware to get wireless working on this laptop. the debian wiki recommends formatting my flash drive as FAT. do they mean FAT 16?. I tried FAT 32 with the correct folder structure, but it didn't work
15:45<logg>How can I format as Fat 16 from debian?
15:46<sney>the man page for mkfs.vfat should tell you how,
15:46<sney>but if you can download a different installer cd there is an easier way
15:46<sney>!firmware image
15:46<dpkg>Unofficial <netinst> images - containing non-free Debian <firmware> packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also <install guide>.
15:46<logg>Yeah, I have one CD only, so I can't use the non-free cd
15:46<logg>installing from USB was not successful, even though I followed the recommended procedure to write the image
15:47<sney>you used cat or dd?
15:47<logg>used dd
15:47<sney>is that the same usb stick you are trying to use for the firmware? if the installer image didn't work from that stick, and the firmware didn't work from it, it is likely the usb stick is worn out
15:47<logg>not likely. I can boot other live images fine

15:48<logg>ones that are a little more tolerant of the way they are written
15:49<sney>the debian iso is pretty tolerant, it just doesn't respond well to being unpacked and rewritten by netbootin
15:50<sney>anyway, the mkfs.vfat option for fat16 is -F 16, though fat32 is fine for the firmware disk
15:50<logg>well. it was already in fat32, so I don't know

15:55<logg>might just try installing firmware after installation
15:55<sney>it can be less of a pain to go that way
15:55<logg>if I can't get the installer to realize that I do in fact have the firmware files in a directory called firmware on a usb flash drive formated in fat32

17:21<helpthenoob>Well I don't know Debian well enough to know whether there exist other necessary block devices which need the dev mount option. I'd also like to mount /tmp and /var noexec, nosuid but I hear that creates problems with apt-get. I may use the D-Pkg::Pre-Invoke & Post-Invoke workaround. I haven't been able to find any information on system hardening using mount options, so I'm probing here.

18:45<R4F_Debian>sney, if you can help me to understand that, I know zfs can run on Debian as part of dkms module, not natively, due license restrictions, do you know about this subject: why zfs is not available for Debian as btrfs, xfs, raiserfs, etc are ?
18:46-!-ixti [~ixti@38.140.30.86] has quit []
18:46<sney>because the linux kernel is licensed under the GPL, and zfs is licensed under the CDDL, and those licenses are incompatible. including zfs modules with the system means building them with the debian kernel which would violate this license
18:47<sney>somehow ubuntu gets around it, I'm not sure if they found a loophole or if they just don't care

18:47<R4F_Debian>yes, I have a Friend who decided for Ubuntu because of that. but I'm Debian Fanatic, won't never replace this System for nothing
18:49<R4F_Debian>the Best choice should be btrfs, but its Project goes as fast as turtle
18:50<sney>my home server runs debian with zfs, the OS is installed on a tiny ssd with ext4 and all of the data including /home is on a zpool that I set up after everything was installed. that setup works for my personal needs. it would be nice for zfs support to exist in the installer but it's very unlikely that that will happen
18:52<R4F_Debian>don't you need to use dkms for zfs in this case ?
18:52<R4F_Debian>oh, now I understood you

18:55<R4F_Debian>this zpool you've created outside Debian itself, a non-partitioned disk space, where there isn't the installation of Debian with ext4?
18:56<R4F_Debian>sorry, quite novice yet, trying to understand this logical process you've created for your home server
18:57<sney>there are wiki pages online that can explain zfs better than I can, but the zpool is the disk space that's made up of my actual disks. then inside the zpool are some filesystems, which are mounted in places like /home and /var
18:58<sney>in linux and unix OSes you can mount filesystems in any directory, and this is transparent to your programs, it's not like windows where you would have C: D: etc whatever
