02:31<dark-reader>hi, I've a BCM43142 wireless card, I've installed the proprietary Broadcom wireless driver for the card but sometimes the internet speed is less than a half of what it should. When this happens I run "sudo modprobe rmmod wl && modprobe wl" then I reconnect to the wifi network and everything works fine. Do you have any idea of how solve this problem?
02:33<jm_>no, you'll have to contact whoever supports this driver
02:34<jm_>or are you saying you are using the driver from the broadcom-sta-dkms package?

03:29<teatime>especially something of the 'this stable package is too old for me to do X' variety.

03:32<korencia>teatime - IMHO - no one starts things will full knowledge of what exactly he will do. The basic assumption in almost any projects is the person will learn. Sometimes a lot. If you are OK with taht, just do it. - But be sure to be managed by someone with knowledge - at least at the beginning. Too much initiative is sometimes the worst thing possible.

04:50<pjotter>judd: THat indeed seems to be the same problem. I have two soundcards and I like to send the output form one particular application to soundcard 2 while all others need to go to soundcard 1. This is easily done with pavucontrol. But infortunately the settings in pavucontrol are not remembered after reboot.

08:48<themill>oem: dynamic linking doesn't magically make a binary compiled against a newer version of a library compatible with older versions of the library
08:49<themill>if it uses symbols from the newer version, it requires the newer version to be present
08:49<themill>,v nginx --release jessie-backports
08:49<judd>Package: nginx on amd64 -- jessie-backports: 1.9.10-1~bpo8+1

15:57<adamm>pulseaudio works very nice, but you need `pavucontrol` to set things up easily. especially for me, with 3 audio devices.
15:57<pjotter>Yes, I use pavucontrol too.
15:58<pjotter>Wel teh only difference then is that my system is Xfce. But that shouldn't be a problem
15:59<chris_se>no, it really shouldn't - especially since firefox is not a KDE app
15:59<pjotter>chris_se: Did you just install pulseaudio and pavucontrol or more packages?
16:00<chris_se>in general this system has lots of packages. but sound-related I don't recall installing anything specially except maybe pavucontrol
16:00<chris_se>pulseaudio is pulled in as a dep anyway by default
16:00<chris_se>so the only difference I could imagine is that I have jessie-proposed-updates enabled to find problems with debian point releases early

21:59<Juest>Ouroboros: Probably because grub doesnt support btrfs by default
22:00<Juest>about driver issues, you install the VM addons/extensions for the guest os
22:00<Guest8239>riva tnt2? it's too old but still fine working, there are no drivers for it(
22:00<Guest8239>jmcnaught
22:01<Guest8239>since ubuntu 9.xx version
22:01<Guest8239>or 8.xxx
22:01<Juest>Why ask here about hardware when its not really the place
22:01-!-Lordz [~Adium@2804:7f5:f080:b0b5:3005:cc13:d5ed:9385] has left #debian []
22:01<Juest>BTW, ubuntu is not debian, ubuntu is more unstable than debian since its a snapshot of debian sid with customizations
22:01<jmcnaught>Guest8239: Xorg has a VESA driver that gets used as a fallback which might work. It's a little slow and doesn't always support full resolution, but it'll probably basically work
22:02<Guest8239>jmcnaught i want full 3d support like under windows
22:03<Guest8239>it's quite good for q3arena
22:03<jmcnaught>Guest8239: you'll need to do some research then, i don't really know
22:04<jmcnaught>Ouroboros: https://wiki.debian.org/Btrfs has some useful information in varying degress of up-to-date
22:04<Guest8239>i did research i need decompile windows driver and write my own linux driver)
22:04<Guest8239>so i need some support from older driver developer
22:04<Juest>Guest8239: noveau exists for this
22:05<Guest8239>no 3d support
22:05<Guest8239>noveau
22:05<Juest>Guest8239: stop trying and do your own research or change the computer, its very unlikely you'll get your thing 100% working/bugless/perfect
22:05<jmcnaught>Guest8239: you would be welcome to try, but that would be a difficult, time-consuming task, and it's not clear to me at this point that the card isn't supported. are you booted into debian right now? what do you get from "lspci -nn | grep -i VGA" ?
22:05<Juest>and stop blabbering

22:07<jmcnaught>Juest: so what? lots of people try to get linux working on older computers. it's okay to ask questions, if you don't like the questions you don't need to be rude and tell people to sop blabbering

22:10<Ouroboros>jmcnaught: are there are any min ram requirements for btrfs?
22:11<jmcnaught>Ouroboros: i honestly don't know a lot about btrfs, i'm still in the "play with it in a disposable VM" phase myself

22:11<Guest8239>thanks, i'm offing) with software i get things right way by myself, i just want you to point me to developers)
22:11<Ouroboros>well, i know nothing either
22:12<Ouroboros>i was going to use zfs, but after reading the lengthy install guide, not so sure :)
22:12<Juest>yeah, please give all the details as precise as you can or stop wasting everyone's time.
22:12<jmcnaught>Ouroboros: try it and see i guess, there's also more detailed docs about it on the kernel.org wiki, though some of that might be specific to newer kernels (that you could get for jessie from backports)
22:13<Ouroboros>yep
22:13<Ouroboros>just curious if its remotely sane to get this working on say 512MB of ram
22:13<Juest>we are not in 2006 anymore, sure, talk to a developer but its not a single person and it will be very hard, they probably will tell you to use a older version of everything. you're on a unsupported land Guest8239
22:13<Ouroboros>or i will have to build a real machine :/
22:13<Juest>Ouroboros: Yes, as long you have a good swap
22:14<Juest>and a reasonably faster disk
22:14<Juest>or at least in a way it doesnt hang too often
22:14<jmcnaught>Guest8239: it's unlikely that you'll find a developer interested in writing a driver for such an old card especially if they don't have one themselves. if it's going to work at all, it will be with drivers that already exist in Debian. To get help here, you'll need to put your logs on the paste site like I said above
