00:25<__z>I have cowsay installed but I can't call it from my shell, thoughts? I don't know where to start trying to figure it what's going on

00:27<__z>Installing it via apttitude it tells me I have it already at the newest version
00:27<jmcnaught>__z: "dpkg -L cowsay" will list the installed files. if i recall correctly it gets installed to /usr/games which might not be in your $PATH
00:28<__z>Ah, you're right
00:28<__z>I don't have that on my $PATH
00:28<__z>Thanks

00:51<Juest>jmcnaught: but why uid 0 $PATH would apply to standard users on sudo --login -u or X terminals?

01:02<Juest>jmcnaught: Under X on a terminal i still get the $PATH that would be given to uid 0
01:02<Juest>(i have modified /etc/profile to just add everything and not evaluate uid)
01:03<Juest>it works even when i specify --noprofile
01:03<Juest>maybe --noprofile --norc tells bash to not load user profile/rc
01:05-!-HiTree [~HiTree@000200cd.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
01:06<Juest>despite having /etc/profile changed it still does ti on X

01:07<Juest>How i can effectively have a clean bash ?
01:08<Juest>because even using --noprofile --norc $PATH remains the same
01:08<Juest>sort of
01:08<jmcnaught>is it simply inheriting the environment from the shell you're launching these from? how are you starting X, with startx?
01:08<jm_>you can't , bash is dirty

11:25<teatime>you can change that.
11:27<teatime>I think the actual limit in modern linux is 4billion (unsigned 32bit int)
11:28<teatime>limits.h should define UID_MAX

13:34<Parrhesiastes>mtn you dont have to press any button on the printer or anything extra?

13:35<mtn>Parrhesiastes: nope, mine wakes up and just works
13:35<teatime>same here, works fine for me on a brother laser printer. I also find that the available open-source printer drivers to work great on my printer, even though there's not one for the exact model. and I think brother printers have that reputation in general.
13:35<Parrhesiastes>ye im on their site... cant find, but i installed it 4-5 days ago, seem to remember it installed without problem

13:42<teatime>but there should be a bunch of epson ppd's by default, you shouldn't need any special driver beyond the defaults.

18:17<Yst>I think Gparted is creating faulty partitions somehow. The partitions can mount and unmount until the device is removed. After being removed, even if no data was written to it, the device's file system can't be read by the file manager.

18:43<Yst>The GNOME partitioning tool doesn't seem to help either. Nor does using the "mkfs.ext4" command.
18:44<Yst>I'm so confused. This USB drive has hardly been used. The first time that I wrote to it was yesterday.

18:45<teatime>did you unplug it anyway?
