00:46<melvin_>I'm trying to get the popularity contest email to work but don't know what to put in the system mail name. I ran dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config and here is what it says on the exim4-config dialog: http://pastebin.com/wGLBz2z7

00:49<seeS>melvin_: it could be almost anything but it depends how you do email
00:51-!-pakman__ [~Oddtwang@6AGAAAM7B.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
00:51<melvin_>seeS: I don't know how to set up the system to deliver email over the Internet. I use a web based email system for my own email but it doesn't work with email clients like Kmail.
00:52<seeS>melvin_: so do you use an email address like melvin@gmail.com or your own domain like me@melvin.com
00:52<melvin_>seeS: yes
00:53-!-JBek [~JBek@han80-1-78-242-38-108.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #debian
00:53<seeS>melvin_: which one?
00:54<teatime>mail is both a complex topic *and* an epic PITA.
00:54<melvin_>seeS: m_lewis@netscape.com it's Netscape email.
00:54<seeS>yes it is, especially now there is a concept systems send mail but they don't have much to do with it
00:54<seeS>like melvin_'s
00:55<teatime>yeah. at a minimum you'd have to add that host to the domain's SPF record, if you really want to originate mail there.
00:55<teatime>melvin_: you should use something like ssmtp or the equivalent exim/postfix configuration, if there is one.
00:56<seeS>I think the problem is, if you don't really "do mail" on a Debian system, what should the domain be?
00:57<teatime>popularity-contest may be special, but in general if you don't really "do mail", mail sent that way is very unlikely to reach the intended recipient.
00:57<seeS>well.. i can think of plenty examples
00:58<seeS>i have a bunch of servers and i want them to email me their logs etc
00:58<seeS>but.. my only email address is a gmail account
00:58<melvin_>seeS: Are they able to be set up to use some other transport besides my web based email? I would have thought that if Debian wanted the popularity contest to work it should have been set up during installation :)
00:58<teatime>seeS: I didn't say you couldn't build a working configuration.
00:58<jmcnaught>https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch06.en.html#_the_mail_system <--- 6.2 and 6.3 have terse intros to basic concepts, and document how to configure exim4 and postfix as a null client (sending mail through a remote MTA)
00:59<teatime>seeS: only that random hosts connecting to other hosts on port 25 to send mail to the 2nd hosts users doesn't work in th emodern world.
00:59<teatime>there's also https://wiki.debian.org/GmailAndExim4 which might provide useful hints here
00:59<seeS>not really, you could send all your emails to your isps mta
00:59<teatime>seeS: which is, not what I'm talking about.
00:59<melvin_>jmcnaught: Thanks, I'll check that out...
01:00<jmcnaught>one of the exim4 packages as a README.Debian file that is pretty thorough too
01:00<teatime>jmcnaught: would it be easier for people who want this config to just install ssmtp instead?
01:00<teatime>or that an outdated perspective
01:00-!-f10 [~flo@ip5b403530.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:01<seeS>teatime: i agree it doesn't work, its kinda a hole in SMTP. If you run servers, you have a domain; however you might not and the way mail works it doesnt work
01:01-!-linux-modder [~Corey84@66-87-82-71.pools.spcsdns.net] has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
01:01<ryouma>jmcnaught: not a single crash since i switched to the backports kernel. yay. interestingly, sound kept playing, so it wasn't a total system crash.
01:01<jmcnaught>teatime: it can be configured through debconf answers, though i think for exim4 you have to edit a file to add smtp auth
01:01<ryouma>jmcnaught: by way of thanks for your advice
01:02<jmcnaught>melvin_: though i agree with teatime's suggestion to use ssmtp or msmtp-mta if you find exim4 or postfix too complicated
01:02<teatime>seeS: in this sort of 'I have one user account and can use my mail host's SMTP server to send mail, but only from myself' ssmtp-like config, I don't think the system mailname means anything at all.
01:02-!-JBek [~JBek@han80-1-78-242-38-108.fbx.proxad.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:02<seeS>teatime: ah, not seen ssmtp but it does sound like its what is needed
01:03<jmcnaught>ryouma: happy to hear your system is working better now :)
01:03<ryouma>jmcnaught: i will keep checking apt-cache policy and when a new version of the regular kernel comes out i will downgrade
01:03<ryouma>the fixed*

01:04-!-awal [~awal@65.38.86.253] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:05<melvin_>jmcnaught: OK, i'll check them out...but my problem is thaqt I don't know the SMTP server name except my own (smtp.isp.netscape.com) which doesn't work on any of my mail clients in Windows or Debian :-)
01:05-!-thunderrd [~thunderrd@110.77.238.173] has quit [Read error: No route to host]
01:05<seeS>melvin_: if it is a delivery problem that's different
01:06<teatime>melvin_: you must have some way to send mail? you will need to use authentication and ideally encryption when connecting to that, otherwise it will only accept mail for e.g. @netscape.com addresses.
01:06<ryouma>with that ~P thing is there a list of the possible things to supply to it?
01:07<seeS>melvin_: outbound you probably want to use your isp's server as the smarthost
01:08<melvin_>teatime: I send mail using Netscape's web based email system which is on a web page and I don't have to know the smtp server's address.
01:08<teatime>ryouma: aptitude search criteria are very useful, in this case ~Pmail-transport-agent searches for packages that provide mail-transport-agent; see https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/aptitude/ch02s04s05.en.html#tableSearchTermQuickGuide for more aptitude searches
01:08-!-dhaval2 [~dhaval2@43.241.25.212] has joined #debian
01:08<seeS>wow, i didnt know netscape was still around
01:08<teatime>melvin_: ah. there's probably instructions there for how to configure a local client.
01:08<jmcnaught>ryouma: what do you mean?
01:09<teatime>ryouma: ~v would show you virtual packages, which are packages that don't really exist, they're just provided by other packages. mail-transfer-agent is an example.
01:09<melvin_>seeS: I can't get ANY email client to work using my ISP's configuration information... :(
01:10<ryouma>jmcnaught: teatime answered my q i think
01:10<seeS>melvin_: hmm, do you know the error? often your ISP will have an inbound and outbound setup
01:10<teatime>ryouma: it's so a package can depend on any mail-transfer-agent being installed without caring which one.
01:10<ryouma>i get really confused by the alternatives system and thought perhaps it was related
01:10<teatime>not directly.
01:11<seeS>urgh, comcast... that's probably your problem
01:11<ryouma>i mean i know they are not directly related but thought perhaps aptitude had some ability to deal with it
01:12<melvin_>teatime: I know all of the information that I got from my ISP but when I try to send mail using Kmail for example I get an error message saying something lik netscape does not relay mail...
01:12<ryouma>it's a sort of discoverability question. i have some app and i try to find alternatives to it.
01:12<teatime>melvin_: sounds like you need to use authentication and aren't.
01:12<jmcnaught>ryouma: do you know about debtags?
01:12<seeS>melvin_: was it netscape doesn't relay email or the isp doesn't relay netscape mail
01:13<melvin_>teatime: No, netscape sends authentication in clear text...
01:14<melvin_>seeS: IA don't know...I would have to try to recreate the error to find out...I'll try it if I can remember how I did it before...brb
01:15<jmcnaught>melvin_: do either of the mail servers you have access to have the submission port (587) available? that port should always support authentication and /should/ support starttls
01:15<ryouma>jmcnaught: sort of. i use axi-cache search, and thought faceted classification was interesting, but i have zero proficiency in it for debian.
01:15<ryouma>jmcnaught: and i hav4e no idea if it is even a project that is still being developed or if axi-cache is actually using it or what
01:16<teatime>melvin_: yeah, using 465 or 587, whichever your system supports, with authentication, will avoid the problem seeS suspects as well as being the Right Way
01:16<melvin_>jmcnaught: No.
01:16<teatime>I don't beleive any ISP only supports plaintext authentication anymore.
01:16<teatime>(as in, I don't beleive it, not I'm not sure.)
01:17<melvin_>teatime: Netscape hasn't updated their system in years...they still use clear text on pop3 and no authentication on smtp...

01:18<jmcnaught>ryouma: i don't know about axi-cache unless that was a typo. if you install the debtags package, you can run commands like "debtags tagsearch mail" for example, and then use the tags you find with ~G, like "aptitude search ~Gmail::notification" for example
01:18<teatime>you cannot send mail w/o authenatication on smtp though, so unless they don't support non-webmail clients at all...
01:19<teatime>well, or if they only support non-webmail clients if you're actually an ISP customer of theirs.
01:19<seeS>comcast should support email out, they should support other domains, but you might need to login

01:23<teatime>melvin_: perhaps you should just take this opportunity to migrate to a new/sane mail provider, and setup forwarding for your @netscape.com address
01:23<teatime>gmail has been handling mine forever and I can't complain.
01:24<seeS>now that's a great idea. I use gmail for my domains
01:24<teatime>it will also pull your email (like fetchmail) if netscape.com can't forward it
01:24<teatime>which might be a nice feature
01:24<melvin_>teatimme: Sounds like a good idea but I've had this email addres for 10 years and am reluctant to change and it only costs me $9.95 per month :)
01:25-!-xbytemx [~xbytemx@189.214.0.199.cable.dyn.cableonline.com.mx] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:25<teatime>melvin_: you can still receive mail there.
01:25<teatime>melvin_: alternately you could setup a gmail addr just for your systems to mail stuff via.
01:26<melvin_>teatime: I see what you mean...I already have a gmail address. I'll look into how to set that up to send email...Thanks!
01:26<seeS>melvin_: You basically need a mail forwarder, some server to send the emails. Now it could be your ISP which you'd login using your ISP username and password, it could be your mail provider, but it looks like they dont do that
01:27<teatime>melvin_: I linked a debian wiki article above specifically about setting up what you want on debian/exim and gmail
01:27<teatime>and jmcnaught linked a doc too

05:47<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu on chat.freenode.net instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.

19:10<Guest50>I am currently running Debian 8.4 Cinnamon 64 bit from the live DVD. I want to install it as my third OS, but it will only boot in software rendering mode. My question is, will it install and boot normaly from the HDD, or will it still boot in SRM.
19:12<sney>that depends on your hardware, mostly

19:14<Guest50>Well this is on a 5 year old HP Pavilion dv7-1245dx with ATI radeon 3200 video. Now Mint 17.3 Cinnamon runs perfect, the only issue I have is Debian live ded booting in SRM.

19:15<musca>Guest50: the free radeon driver needs the package firmware-linux-nonfree
19:16<sney>^ right, and firmware isn't included on the live dvds, so you just need to install that package once you install debian to disk and everything should work normally
19:17<Guest50>So... If I go ahead and install Debian 8.4 Cinnamon, it will boot in SRM, I just need to install the proper drivers???
19:17<sney>you need to install the package firmware-linux-nonfree which enables some locked features in your gpu.
19:18<musca>the drivers are already active.
19:19<Guest50>Right, thats what I meant. So, to be sure, Install Debian, then install firmware-linux-nonfree and all should be ok ???
19:19<sney>yes
19:19<musca>yes
19:19<Guest50>Ok.... here goes...
19:20<Guest50>Wait... one last question... When Debian installs, like Mint, it will find my XP and Mint right...
19:21<sney>yes, mint and debian use the same method to check for other OSes and include them in the grub list
19:22<Guest50>Ok. thanks again. I am running of the Live DVD so I am going to install now...

22:21<Zero3K>hmm
22:21<Zero3K>try making a RAM Disk
22:21<Zero3K>that's what I do on Windows 7
22:22<Zero3K>I have Otter Browser set to have its profile and cache directories on a RAM Disk
22:22<Zero3K>and I back it up every night to a disk image and restore it on startup
22:22<vortek>i didn't run this slow ,, last time i ran debian llast year on this machine

22:23<jmcnaught>vortek: Flash is a common cause of slowness. It can also depend on the websites you go to, if they use buggy Javascript that can slow things down, especially if you have multiple tabs open each running their own crummy bunch of JS
22:23<Zero3K>I also have the Flash plugin files on it along with the spool directory

22:23<vortek>well it didnt do this last time :(

22:25<Zero3K>hmm
22:25<vortek>i just dont know how to pinpoinnt it
22:25<Zero3K>so can any of you help me with the touchpad issue?
22:25<jmcnaught>vortek: try going to "about:support" in iceweasel, and use the "restart with add-ons disabled" button

22:26<vortek>ok
22:26<jmcnaught>vortek: or run a system monitor type program, sort by CPU use, and check to see if the plugincontainer is hogging CPU. that would indicate a problem with flash
22:26<vortek>k
