03:16<guruprasad>The Debian wiki page on Exim (https://wiki.debian.org/Exim) tells that it is possible to insert your own sections of configuration without having to modify the distribution supplied files, but is it really possible to do it so?
03:17<guruprasad>For instance the ACL file for rcpt is 30_exim4-config_check_rcpt, but it has a blank accept at the end
03:17<guruprasad>so it is not possible to plug acls from other files
03:17<guruprasad>unless I create a whole new duplicate of that file, rename the acl, add my modifications and set it as the rcpt acl file.
03:18<guruprasad>Is there a better way to do this?

05:39<grove>GreyArea: It shouldn't (but I won't promise anything). I think it's more likely that other updates will break that package. As far as I can see the package was removed from Debian because it was dead upstream, so presumably other solutions exists, you're probably better off investigating those. In general I would warn against adding wheezy to sources list, the scenarios I can imagine should be fairly easy to recover from, but I
05:39<grove>+'m quite sure things can go bad in ways I didn't imagine.

06:01<zeta>gZen: if superuser is able to write have a look at the dmask/fmask mount options. those allow you to set permissions for the mounted device
06:02<grove>gZen: I don't know mucj about ntfs, but if you can write to it as root but not as an ordinary user, either it has some permissions in the fs that restricts access (I don't think ntfs has that, but as I said I don't know much about ntfs), or you should look at adding it to fstab, the user option is probably what you need

19:03<aidalgol>I'm trying to figure out how to set underscan in xorg.conf, and all my googling is coming up with is how to do that via xrandr.
19:08<aidalgol>I need to enable underscan in X11 for my TV, and I have figured out how to do that manually via the xrandr command. I have confirmed that this has the desired result when run in an xterm in an X session, so I then tried setting up the command invocation to run on login, but that seems to have no effect. I'm guessing this is because it's run before X has finished initialising. I *think* the solution is to enable underscan in the
19:08<aidalgol>xorg.conf file, but I can't figure out how to do that.

20:06<PovAddict>I have a filesystem-level (rsync) backup on an external disk

20:08<PovAddict>hmm, maybe I should
20:08<PovAddict>I mean, to get the list of steps
20:08<PovAddict>it would be worthless as a 'test bcache' experiment since the idea is seeing the performance improvement, but I would know what needs to be done
20:08<jmcnaught>something like this i would definitely test first, doesn't have to be a very large VM

21:05<rudi_s>aidalgol: Alternatively you can also run it in your ~/.xsessionrc if you only need it for a single user (or prefer not to modify /etc unless necessary).
21:05<catern>so I accidentally put stretch in my sources.list on my jessie server without configuring pinning, and installed a few packages which incidentally brought in an updated libc
21:06<catern>now i have configured pinning, but can my system continuing running fine if my libc is from stretch like this? or do I need to just go all the way and upgrade to stretch?
21:06<jmcnaught>catern: mixing stable and testing even with pinning is not recommended, nor is running a server on testing
21:07<jmcnaught>catern: if you remove stretch from your sources, you can check to see how many packages came from there with a command like "aptitude search '?narrow(?installed, ?not(?archive(stable)))'"
21:07<catern>well, it's a shell server, so it's not particularly important how stable it is, and updated packages are useful; that's why i wouldn't be too worried to just upgrade to stretch
21:08<jmcnaught>if it's just a few, you can try manually downgrading the packages one by one
21:08<catern>updated packages are valuable to the users*

23:15<nicolas17>in the VM
23:15<Guest760>nice
23:16<Guest760>kvm?
23:16<nicolas17>virtualbox :p it's for testing

23:16<Guest760>I like virtual box for my windows vm's

23:21<nicolas17>time to try bcache'ing the VM
23:21<Guest760>bcache?
23:21<Guest760>explain please.
23:22<nicolas17>Guest760: it's to make a 'hybrid drive' with a hard disk and a relatively small SSD
23:22-!-azzamsa [~quassel@202.80.216.159] has joined #debian
23:22<Guest760>I'm all on ssd. No hard disks.
23:23<nicolas17>I have a laptop with a 500GB hard disk and a 32GB SSD :)
23:24<Guest760>240gb ssd sba and 500gb ssd sdb
23:24<Guest760>on a laptop as well
23:24<jmcnaught>nicolas17: this sort of caching can also be done with LVM by the way, this is how i do it on my laptop
23:24<Guest760>caching?
23:25<Guest760>what kind of caching? only set up lvm a few times.
23:25<nicolas17>guest760: bcache in a nutshell: things you read from the hard disk are cached in the SSD, things you write are first written to the SSD (which is way faster) and then asynchronously copied to the hard disk
23:25<Guest760>what if I only have ssd?
23:25<nicolas17>then there's nothing to gain from bcache
23:25<Guest760>nothing written to my swap?
23:26<Guest760>what is bcache?
23:26<nicolas17>unless one of your ssds is significantly faster and the other is bigger :P
23:26<nicolas17>I just told you
23:26<Guest760>both same speed, just different size.
23:26<nicolas17>then you don't need it :P
23:26<nicolas17>jmcnaught: so how do I do this with LVM?
23:27<nicolas17>jmcnaught: and why does bcache exist if LVM can do it? :)
23:27<Guest760>lvm is cool.

23:29<nicolas17>wikipedia says lvm uses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dm-cache
23:29<Guest760>So bcahce allows ssd to run as cahce?

23:29<Guest760>can't spell...
23:29<nicolas17>yes
23:30<Guest760>okay. so it's like a intermediary between memory and hard disks?
