00:01<nicolas17>hrm
00:01<nicolas17>jmcnaught: the bcache documentation uses a disk device as example
00:01<nicolas17>instead of a partition... I hope that doesn't mean anything
00:03<nicolas17>"To register your bcache devices automatically, you could add something like this to an init script:" eugh, how will that work if I'm using bcache for the root partition? >_<

00:28<jmcnaught>nicolas17: i haven't set up bcache before, but do the docs say anything about it only working for drives and not partitions? my guess is that it would work on any block device
00:28<nicolas17>jmcnaught: the README.Debian got me in the right track
00:29<nicolas17>works for partitions, works for root filesystems (though it needs separate /boot), and I don't need to do anything for init on boot because initramfs takes care of it
00:30<jmcnaught>ukine: you're welcome :)
00:30<jmcnaught>nicolas17: cool. let me know how it works out

10:24<hellion>I have gone through the documents that mention inetd & xinetd but those files seem long gone.
10:27<petn-randall>hellion: Do you have inetd installed?
10:28<hellion>base install, this computer hasn't been online yet. My assumption was that it was part of the base install..
10:29-!-Deedend [~sailfish@151.36.195.199] has joined #debian
10:29<petn-randall>hellion: does dpkg -l '*inetd*' give you any results?
10:31<hellion>ii update-inetd 4.43 all inetd config file updater
10:32<petn-randall>hellion: Then you don't have any inetd installed, so you can be relieved that there aren't any unwanted daemon being started :)
10:32<hellion>if i do have to install.. perhaps should I install xinetd over inetd or is there a better service manager that you'd suggest?
10:33-!-Linkshot [~DougalJac@4MJAAEAL7.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
10:33<petn-randall>hellion: I personally find inetd a thing of the past and don't use it anymore.
10:33<hellion>much thanks
10:34<petn-randall>hellion: You're welcome.
10:34<petn-randall>hellion: I guess inetd still has its use on system with very limited ressources like embedded systems.
10:36<hellion>I see. I was wading through the Debian Security Manual that is provided on the site & reviewing the services was one section in the manual, so yeah, a little frustration finding something that wasn't there. I'll chalk it up to Sunday morning cobwebs. Hahha

17:49<MarcL>hi guys, analyzing my conenctions with ethrape I have found that from mozilla firefox goes out lots of connections towards amazonaws.com, I have looked for support on the mozilla irc help and many users confirmed that even if you block plugins, extension, the small search bar, the automatic updates of all of them, deactivation of all updates and security checks... still firefox connect with amazonaws.com, less but still often. Please check t
17:49<MarcL>he connections when you use firefox and you will understand what I am talking about. I have modified several values as suggested in the official firefox page but these connections are still there, some users gave me a big list on about:confic to change but... I dont love to use a browser changing hundreds of values and stuff to stop some unwanted traffic to amazons server. what do you think about these conenctions.. is that normal?

23:32<CooloutAC>k-man: its great for the paranoid too, i mean lets face it no matter what you do if targeted you are screwed, you could be using grsecurity with selinux and apparmor and the strictest policies. then if you feel you are compromised what do you do? reformat and start from scratch all over again.
23:32<CooloutAC>qubes is so much easier

23:39<CooloutAC>you will see it explained in that video
23:40<CooloutAC>for example. you would open office files or pdfs in a disposable vm for editing
23:41<CooloutAC>k-man: its all very user friendly a gui for everything
