00:12<zorg24>I'm trying to switch to testing, but when I run sudo aptitude dist-upgrade, I get the error No solution found within the allotted time. Try harder? [Y/n]. What should I do?
00:14<jmcnaught>zorg24: usually apt-get is what's recommended for release upgrades. also stretch support is in #debian-next, #debian is for stable
00:14<zorg24>jmccrohan, ok good to know I'll ask there, although I thought it was bad to mix the use of aptitude and apt-get

01:33<k-man>if i want a user process to create a socket in /var/run/somedir do I just have to create the directory and chmod it before hand? and if I want this to run at boot time, i must do that as part of its startup script?
01:33<k-man>just checking if I understand that that's the correct approach

01:34<manpreet>hmm /var/run/somedir should exist and be owned by user
01:35<manpreet>if not your process will fail to create the socket you could create /var/run/someprocess.sock directly which should work
01:35<k-man>yeah, i realise that part. but somedir vanishes after rebooting as /var/run is tmpfs i beleive
01:36<k-man>yeah, tmpfs on my system
01:36<k-man>amyway, got to run
01:36<k-man>ttyl

07:20<larjona>hi Debian friends. A friend has installed Debian jessie 8.4 with the netinst cd. She selected to install several desktops, and gdm3 as the default greeter. We find that gdm3 runs with black screen as background. We dpkg-reconfigure lightdm and selected lightdm as the default, and lightdm had the "lines" theme. How can we put the "lines" theme in gdm?

15:21<jla>yep. I've used backupninja to manage it. Looking for restoreninja :)
15:21<nicolas17>but what I needed now was simply to copy *everything* into an external disk, then reformat my laptop and copy everything back

15:24<nicolas17>if you're already using lvm, it may be easier to set up lvmcache/dm-cache

16:45<nicolas17>_44trent: are you on 64-bit Debian?
16:46<CooloutAC>hax0r: maybe this ubuntu thread would help you https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2233005
16:46<nicolas17>you need to install the i386 package but it depends on your GPU brand
16:47<curious_>i am mechanical engineering undergrad and interested to dive into hacking . can anyone help me where should i start
16:47<_44trent>nicolas17 i'm on 64 bit debian. I have a radeon R9 390.
16:48<musca>_44trent: is libgl1-nvidia-glx-i386 installed?
16:48<_44trent>how would I check?
16:48<musca>heh AMD ...
16:48<nicolas17>musca: isn't that the pre-multiarch package naming?
16:48<_44trent>Does it mean anything I installed fglrx?
16:48<_44trent>i tried to get crimson to work, but it refused so i just decided to get catalyst 14.9
16:48<musca>yes fglrx is for AMD
16:48<nicolas17>_44trent: you have fglrx for 64-bit, you need to *also* install "libgl1-fglrx-glx:i386"
16:49<_44trent>okay
16:49<_44trent>do I need to reboot now that I installed it?

If udev regens /dev then whatever configuration state udev reads may ahve been modified by the pulseaudio package in steamOS. I have removed all SteamOS packages but have residual damage to my debian Jessie install.

20:29<bugaloo>wpostma, I'm trying to access my wireless router. I can access it via Telnet. But not via ssh. It seems to be a service difference on ssh client that allows putty to work but not ssh client on linux terminal
20:29<wpostma>You're trying to SSH INTO a VM or OUT of it?
20:30<wpostma>Change from NAT to Bridged and you will have fewer problems like this.

22:05<twb>I built a custom kernel without module support -- everything is compiled in, and new modules can't be loaded. It's working fine, except systemd-udevd is whinging about broken moddep at boot time. The error is actually coming from libkmod.so.2.2.8: "bet systemd-udevd[323] - could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/3.16.7-ckt20inmate/modules.dep.bin'"

22:05<twb>Can I somehow tell "the system" that it's a static kernel and it should stop trying to use kmod?
22:06<twb>Deleting /bin/kmod doesn't prevent the error, because systemd-udevd is linking directly to the .so. Deleting that .so prevents the system from booting at all.
22:06<sney>"touch /lib/modules/3.16.7-ckt20inmate/modules.dep.bin" ?
22:07<twb>I suppose that's worth a try.

22:07<twb>I don't mind just ignoring that one error message, but I'm mildly concerned that there are other, worser implications I haven't spotted
22:07<sney>I also wonder about just running depmod and maybe it'll generate modules.dep.bin empty
