02:40<jmcnaught>gonzalo: there are Limit directives documented in systemd.exec, and Restart=on-abnormal can restart when the service is timing out. It's probably better to figure out why the service consumes so much CPU and fix that

02:42<jmcnaught>gonzalo: systemd.resource-control(5) might also interest you

02:44<jmcnaught>gonzalo: you could also use monit or something similar, but the best would be to fix the cause of the problem, whatever's making the service consume so much CPU instead of restarting it all the time

12:08<Cerb>because for example if i try to save the file it says that i do not have permissions to save it

12:14<musca>r is for read, w for write, x for execute. (well, that is the easiest part)
12:14<Cerb>i use kile to edit the tex file...but basically when i open that testfile.tex (that is not empty) i see that file empty, as if kile opened a new one..and if i write on that file and save it in kile, i get an error that says i have no permissions to write
12:15<Cerb>the point is that this happens if i open testfile.tex with kile from pcmanfm, but not if i open it from nautilus
12:15<jla>Cerb: that is strange. What if you open the file with something else?
12:15<musca>yes, you are opening the file in a different working directory, where you have no write permission

12:20<jla>Sounds pretty specific. This sounds the same: https://sourceforge.net/p/pcmanfm/bugs/779/
12:20<Cerb>that is what i think musca..because if i looked at the recent files in kile it actually shows that the "new file" that it just opened was in a different directory that looks kind of doubled: /home/path-to-file/home/path-to-file/testfile.tex
12:21<jla>"It looks like the only issue is that kile uses $(HOME) as the base path rather than the current working directory for relative path."
12:21<Cerb>oh..thanks jla..i will read that
12:22<lindi->jla: the bug seems to be in the .desktop file, not kile itself
12:22<lindi->jla: or hmm, it's just a workaround
12:23<Cerb>actually i am not forced to use pcmanfm .. i might use another file manager.. i just like pcmanfm
12:23<jla>I agree
12:23<jla>or you could edit your shortcut to launch differently

15:00<blast007>I have a Debian 8 host running a KVM guest of Debian 8 (using libvirt). The host has two public IP addresses (one on eth0, the other on eth0:0), and I have NAT set up through libvirt using the secondary IP. Requests from the guest to outside systems show as coming from the secondary public IP, but when I make a request from the guest to the host, it shows the 192.168.x.x address.
15:00<blast007>Is there a way to make it use the public IP for guest<-->host communication as well?

16:14<jla>jmcnaught: Good point! :) I was about to ask for a tip on learning how to create those things. Yes, it does run as a service using an init-script which it feels like I 'barely' (long ago) updated to be LSB compliant for Wheezy
16:14<jmcnaught>jla: actually from what i gather it seems systemd fixed this by making RemoveIPC not apply to system users. I bet you could fix this by making a system user for this program with "adduser --system ..." and using that instead of the nobody user

16:15<jmcnaught>jla: nobody has a uid of 65534, system users have uids between 100 and 999 (on debian at least). I didn't dig very far, but i think systemd is deciding what's a system user based on what's in /etc/login.defs
16:15<jla>jmcnaught: That's a also good solution for other reasons I've read in the past. Maybe I'll use this as a reason to finally do that

16:44<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: VirtualBox provides specialized drivers for guests so that they can use the virtualized hardware. I don't use VBox, but libvirt+KVM which has similar "virtio" drivers. This is probably why you are stuck using the fallback VESA driver. /var/log/Xorg.0.log would have some details
16:44<blast007>Weierstrass: I install that and then I can just resize the VirtualBox window to whatever size I want.
16:46<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: you'll want to watch the output of apt-get when you install the package to make sure it successfully compiles the modules. The dkms package it depends on recommends a linux-headers package, which should install unless you've done something like disable recommends (which is not recommended)

16:58<barteks2x>Is it possible to make it so that after the next stable release my system will automatically switch from testing to stable?
16:59<jeremiah>barteks2x: What are you using in your /etc/apt/sources.list -- testing or stretch?
16:59<barteks2x>testing
16:59<jeremiah>If its testing, you'll follow testing
16:59-!-Airwave [~Airwave@0001a5d2.user.oftc.net] has quit [Quit: Bye]
16:59<jeremiah>But I think you can switch to stretch and then when stretch is released, you'll be on "stable"
16:59<barteks2x>So I need to change testing to stretch, right?
16:59<jeremiah>barteks2x: Yeah, I think that should do it.
16:59<jmcnaught>barteks2x: this probably isn't a very good idea. while testing is frozen a lot of stuff gets queued up in unstable. when testing becomes stable, there's a lot of turbulent changes in testing
17:00<Weierstrass>blast007, jmcnaught: sorry for my ignorance, you are telling me that I have to install guest additions in VirtualBox on Windows then after installing Debian I have to install the guest additions again inside the GNU/Linux OS?
17:00<blast007>you install it on the virtual machine, not on the host
17:00<jmcnaught>barteks2x: so it's probably best to stick with "stretch" and then remain on stable for the first few months, then move to the next testing release. also testing support is next door at #debian-next
17:00<barteks2x>Switching from stable to testing was probably the worst decision I've made, and when it will be possible I want to start using stable again

17:03<blast007>!contrib
17:03<dpkg>[contrib] Debian packages that contain <DFSG>-compliant software, but have dependencies not in main (possibly packaged for Debian in non-free). To get contrib packages, add lines like "deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ [jessie|stretch|sid] main contrib" to your /etc/apt/sources.list, then «aptitude update». Also ask me about <non-free>, <contrib list>.
17:03<barteks2x>I have a few reasons. 1. I don't want to ever touch nvidia drivers+bumblebee again, 2. I don't want to reinstall all of my programs half of which I don't even remember now.
17:04<blast007>Weierstrass: basically change at least the main lines in /etc/apt/sources.list so it ends with "main contrib" instead of just "main", then 'apt-get update' and then install the package

17:07<jmcnaught>barteks2x: well if your sources say "stretch" then you'll remain on stretch once it becomes stable. Also "aptitude search '~i!~M'" will list packages that weren't installed automatically (eg mostly ones you selected manually)
17:07<Alam_Squeeze>R4F_Debian: try this command, find ~ -name "V-u2jD7W3yU.*"

17:10<jeremiah>jmcnaught: Yeah, I've looked at the wiki, I suppose I should look more closely at dovecot-core. I don't think I looked very carefully there.
17:10<jeremiah>The dovecot wiki is pretty decent, but a bit terse.

17:14<jmcnaught>barteks2x: fair enough, just keep in mind that once you have stable set up it stays that way.. package upgrades only fix bugs and security vulnerabilities. On testing however package upgrades can bring new features, change behaviours, remove stuff, introduce new bugs etc. So testing might be fine for you right now, but if you want "no surprises" then stable is what you want to use
17:16<barteks2x>^stable is what I want. I only changed to testing in my desperate attempt to fix issue with bumblebee (that still isn't fixed, but it's closed on github)

20:41<Weierstrass>jmcnaught: yes, I'm learning :) I'm reading right now about how to configure sudo
20:43<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: sudo is pretty easy to set up. You install the sudo package, then add your user to the sudo group with the command "adduser username sudo". Then log out, log back in, and sudo commands will work.
20:44<jmcnaught>Weierstrass: there are some pretty decent free books at https://www.debian.org/doc/ the handbook and reference especially, they both can also be installed locally with packages
