00:23<calher>Just installed Jessie vith KDE. Changed sources.list to point to testing. Did apt-get upate && apt-get dist-upgrade. Rebooted. Vhen the sistem is done booting and the desktop starts to appear, I see nothing but a black screen vith a rotating KDE loading cursor vhich eventuallie turns into a KDE pointing cursor. The screen remains black. I cannot log in or anithing.
00:25<calher>Pardon strange spelling. I cannot svitch to English keemap in the teletipe terminal.
00:25<twb>calher: jessie is not testing
00:25<twb>calher: are you trying to run stretch (current testing)?
00:27<calher>I am trieing to use Unstable. Mi Debian-using friends said to svitch to Testing and then to Unstable.
00:27<calher>Bi updating sources.list.
00:27<twb>!testing
00:27<dpkg>Testing is a continuously updated release between <stable> and <unstable>, currently codenamed <stretch>. See http://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting . Support in #debian-next on irc.oftc.net and ask me about <testing faq> <jessie->stretch> <testing security> <moving target> <apt-listchanges> <apt-listbugs> and <bts>. You need a sound knowledge of Debian and be prepared for a very bumpy ride. Don't use it on things that are critical!
00:27<calher>Because, obv, there is no Unstable install image.
00:27<twb>calher: there is, actually :-)
00:28<calher>I'm losing mi temperament nau.
00:28<twb>http://cdimage.debian.org/debian/dists/{stable,testing,unstable}/main/installer-{i386,amd64}/current/images/netboot/mini.iso
00:29<twb>But unstable installer is probably not the best way to install unstable
00:29<calher>I can double-U get that, right?
00:29<jmcnaught>those mini.isos don't support UEFI
00:29<calher>I use Libreboot.
00:29<jmcnaught>calher: why not use jessie for a bit while you get used to Debian?
00:30<calher>Mi sistem is alreadie broke.
00:30<twb>I *think* the stable installer can install unstable directly, if you do an "expert" install
00:30<calher>I vanted Plasma 5.
00:30<calher>And mi friends are on Unstable, and thei said to do it this vai.
00:31<twb>calher: the way they suggested is an OK way
00:31<calher>But it broke.
00:31<twb>calher: I think you should talk to #debian-next about that
00:31<jmcnaught>calher: okay, just understand that testing/unstable aren't rolling releases for end users, they're part of the development process. probably best to install a minimal jessie system with no X or KDE, upgrade to testing then unstable, then install KDE. The fewer packages there are to upgrade, the quicker and more trouble-free it will go
00:32<jmcnaught>and yeah, #debian-next
00:32<calher>Maibe the issue vas something else. I knou that vhen I tried to reboot, it vould not reboot, and mani apps started to not function (like Mumble vould not open links, but KDE veb brauser did.)
00:33<twb>calher: this channel is for jessie, we can't help with testing
00:33<calher>I tried to open a terminal to reboot and Konsole vould not open. Perhaps I should have did Alt+F1.
00:34<calher>I am speechless. I am angrie. I vant to crie. Goodbie.

02:34<sleser>e2fsprogs for me ?
02:35<jmcnaught>sleser: what most people do is use full disk encryption which can be done in the debian-installer. Only encrypting some directories isn't that safe because the data could end up in swap or /tmp for example
02:36<jim>DoomGuy2000, so either you forgot this is NOT a social channel... or you're doing this on purpose
02:36<sleser>i see
02:36<sleser>ok
02:37<sleser>well even the simple thing would be ok . because sometimes friens come to use my computer id like to know that they atempted to search within they beyond and entered faulty passwords to atempt to view a folder on my machine . even tho i let them use it for a brouser or so like they wanted

02:39<sleser>so the next time i know not to let them
02:39<sleser>some peole are just slick thats why
02:39<twb>If they have physical access, you are pretty screwed
02:39<sleser>they ask for a helow then they want the intire hand
02:39<jmcnaught>sleser: well don't give physical access to people you don't trust of course, but you give them a separate account to use you can restrict what they have access to
02:40<jim>if you have a specific debian issue, ask about it (and be specific/informative/concise/on-topic when you do) and other than that, use channels that are meant for social interaction (this part should take care of things in case you forgot... if you're doing this on purpose, there are other actions to take)
02:40<sleser>so its acreating another loging rite ?

09:14<p0rk0ff>also considering this: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/nouveau/2015-September/022208.html i don't understand if that's a condition that devs want to handle like this, or they would want to fix it

23:41<awal>_44trent3, my last suggestion is: now that you have task-mate-desktop installed, run dpkg -l | grep ^ii and check which kde and gnome pkgs/libs you dont need and purge them. it may be complicated because mate is gnome2 based...
23:41<_44trent3>alright, hopefully it's not too complicated

23:45<jmcnaught>_44trent3: you know how when you install a package and it also installs a bunch of dependencies? The package that you name in the command is installed "manually", the stuff it brings as dependencies are installed "automatically". So when you remove the manually installed package, a command like "apt-get autoremove" will remove the packages that were installed "automatically". Does that make sense?
23:45<awal>it's not a good idea mix kde and gnome , but that's ok ; you are learning
23:46-!-dudeguy [~officialp@96.2.151.82] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
23:46<jmcnaught>it's totally fine to mix kde and gnome or whatever you want, as long as you have the disk space
23:46<_44trent3>which I kind of don't really tbh
23:46<jmcnaught>when debian packages cannot be mixed they will conflict with each other
