01:32<jmcnaught>!ask
01:32<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.
01:33<Guest1661>ok thank you going to collect the data that I have coming back in a few minutes

Knoppix is a live CD distribution which is <based on Debian>, useful as a rescue CD, to test hardware, and for situations where you have access to a computer but it isn't Debian. http://www.knoppix.org/ unofficial: http://Debian-knoppix.alioth.Debian.org/ <Debian-live> is the Debian equivalent for publishing live systems.

10:02<die-fi>Yes
10:03<jim>die-fi, ok, I'm not sure how you're booted, but if we assume you went into maintainance mode, if you hit ctrl-D now, it should move to regular mode

10:07<diefi>at the time of creating all the partitions and LV I thought SWAP would be used and not /tmp, thats what caused all this in the first place

12:42<danielsh>jspiros, you might want to look into sbuild/pbuilder for testing patches,
12:42<danielsh>jspiros, that builds the package in a minimal environment... but perhaps that's more useful to package maintainers than to patchers.
12:43<danielsh>Also are you aware of #debian-mentors, questions about patch contributions would on-topic there, I think
12:43<jspiros>I was not aware, that sounds useful, thanks :)

12:44<jspiros>it's a small change to the systemd unit for bind9, which I have tested, I'm just hoping that if a patch is submitted that might get it fixed since it's a >1 year old bug
12:44<NewBumz>Hi Everyone :) Newb question, I am trying to install wine-bin:386 on Debian Wheezy. At some point I installed a newer version of libc6 than is in the repos (I think it was to get Netflix working). Should I use --noinstall-recomends to force wine to install with a non recommended libc?
12:45<danielsh>jspiros, IME it depends on the maintainer...
12:45<danielsh>jspiros, Just yesterday an upstream project I'm in was forwarded a three years old bug that the downstream (non-debian) maintainer hadn't acted on.
12:45<jspiros>danielsh: worth a try anyway, I have a workaround in place for my uses

18:50<barteks2x>from man sudo: "PATH May be overridden by the security policy." But how to make it not override PATH?
18:51<somiaj>barteks2x: partly because you want to include /sbin and /usr/sbin in the sudo $PATH (which usually isn't in a normal users $PATH) along with giving some control over the path (important if you want to have control over what files can be run via sudo)

18:59<somiaj>barteks2x: /usr/local is the same way, debian packages do not install to /usr/local
18:59<somiaj>there are also nice tools like stow to help manage source install to /usr/local
19:01<barteks2x>maybe. But I already have everything set up in /opt. And /opt is easier to remember that /usr/local. I would always confuse it with something else. And I don't install from source, it's mostly installing things that need to be extracted-in-whatever-place-I-want.

21:57<barteks2x>How to fix mute/unmute keyboard button that doesn't unmute? I always need to manually go to pavucontrol and unmute it.
21:58<jmcnaught>barteks2x: when you installed xfce did you use the task-xfce-desktop package (or select it during the installer)?
21:59<barteks2x>I selected it when installing debian. For newly created user no volume control button works at all
21:59<barteks2x>It displays the notofication, but does nothing
22:00<jmcnaught>barteks2x: i don't use xfce, but maybe its mixer is configured control the wrong channel? do the volume up/down keys work?
22:00<barteks2x>yes, these work
22:01<barteks2x>it does mute but doesn't unmute
22:02<barteks2x>At least it doesnt work when I use headphones. No idea what when they are not connected. I almost always use headphones

23:02<themill>chealer: gmail maps IMAP folders to tags and removing an email from a folder in the IMAP client is only removing the tags.
23:03<somiaj>chealer: I forget, are you using imap or pop3 with gmail?

23:03<somiaj>ahh, so it seems gmail is doing something else on top of imap, I was thinking the issue could have been pop3 vs imap
23:04<themill>There is a setting for «When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder»
23:04<chealer>somiaj: IMAP
23:05<chealer>themill: I know the basics. but you can still permanently delete mails. it's just that I cannot figure out how to do it in a single step.

23:07<themill>Well you'd need to explain what those multiple steps were for us to have any hope of knowing what you're doing
23:08<chealer>themill: currently I "cannot" change this setting because the previous setting (When I mark a message as delete in IMAP) is enabled. though I was planning to test other values if I cannot find a solution more easily.

23:11<chealer>themill: I am not doing it - I was using Delete for months until I realized that did not actually delete. It should not matter what am I doing if there is a way to do it. But it can be done by deleting then going to All messages and deleting again.
23:11<Ch4mpz>i don`t my conect
23:11<themill>So, what I said earlier.
23:13<themill>You'd need to not have that folder visible
23:14<chealer>themill: I had seen the setting you referred to but I have not tried playing with it since the current value is the default and I do not understand the options well. plus none of the documentation I have read discussed that option.
23:15<chealer>themill: the All messages folder?
