00:01<jcrain>R4F_Debian: try it with avconv -i borp.mp4 -vn borp.mp3
00:01<jcrain>R4F_Debian: it might be trying to also encode video
00:01<R4F_Debian>-vn makes difference in terms of speed up the process, so...
00:02<R4F_Debian>well, I am installing ffmpeg here, after this installation , I will install avconv again and try it according your suggestion. jcrain, Thank you Very Much !

00:40<spande>in /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules it says: For Linux >= 2.6.22 without CONFIG_USB_DEVICE_CLASS=y
00:41<spande>how do I figure out if my bpo kernel is using CONFIG_USB_DEVICE_CLASS ?
00:42<spande>background: I am installing a brother dcp-1510 printer/scanner/copier. Following the instructions, it worked as a printer
00:43<jmcnaught>spande: check the kernel's config file in /boot
00:43<spande>it does not scan (jessie with backport from testing)
00:46<spande>no CONFIG_USB_DEVICE_CLASS, but I guess kernel 4.5.0 is quite different from 2.6.22
00:48<spande>I had it working in oldstable as a scanner. I'll see if it carries over.
00:50<jmcnaught>spande: if you end wanting to uncomment that line instead of doing it in /lib, put the lines in a file in /etc/udev/rules.d/
00:50<spande>ah, thanks
00:52<jmcnaught>the files in /lib are managed by packages, but files in /etc have higher priority

07:39<k-man>maybe i can put an $(echo $string) instead
07:39<k-man> ie < $(echo $string)
07:40<ring>k-man: dash doesn't support <<<
07:40<ring>If you want to escape a sed escape string, there's a better option
07:40<ring>sed doesn't require you to use /
07:40<ring>You can use any character you want
07:41<ring>It's part of POSIX, although it's only a GNU extension in ed
07:41<k-man>ring, but.... this particular script (not mine) is passing in a password to the replace part. who knows what chars it will have
07:42<ring>Ah
07:42<k-man>its better to escape it i believe
07:42<ring>In that case, there's an easy replacement for <<<
07:42<k-man>do tell!
07:42<ring>printf "%s" "$string" | command
07:42<k-man>ah, ok
07:42<ring>"%s\n" if you want a newline
07:42<ring>You can use echo instead, but it's slightly less reliable
07:43<ring>Because of escape codes and such
07:43<ring>Versions of echo are less likely to be compatible than versions of printf
07:43<k-man>thanks
07:43<k-man>nice tip
07:43<k-man>trying it now
07:43<ring><<< is nice, but really easy to do without
07:45<ring>Instead of using two temporary variables you might just want to nest everything
07:45<k-man>yep, printf works nicely
07:45<k-man>thanks!
07:46<ring>No problem
07:46<k-man>now i just need to work out how to submit a patch for this thing :)

For users of testing and unstable, updated packages are normally in <experimental>; only Extended Support Release (ESR) versions are suitable for release in <stable> so only those versions can be uploaded to unstable.

Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. 10:43<faro>ok, i've read the installation guide to install debian on it but it indicate the 2.6.20 linux kernel which is a bit old, so when the os will be installed can i update the kernel or not ?
10:43<faro>this installation guide btw https://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnIntelMacPro
10:44<jthomas>to update the kernel (from Debian repos) you'd almost certainly need to upgrade the full OS. A 2.6 kernel is more than a few years old and you may want to see if that newer architecture is supported by the more current releases.
