00:07<twb>lspci -nn | grep -i serial ?
00:10<twb>Current laptops rarely have a DB-25 or DB-9 socket, but you can easily get a USB to DB-9 adapter
00:11<neophobia-irc>twb: this ones a special snowflake :)
00:11<twb>kay
00:11-!-bounce [~bounce@2602:306:ccba:27d0:2ca4:1aae:fb10:61d1] has joined #debian
00:12<neophobia-irc>twb: also nothing showed up under lspci i think it's under some other intel bridge thingy
00:12<twb>on my intel systems there's still a chipset for that on the southbridge (I think), and disabling it broke the getty and/or the keyboard (can't remember which)
00:12<twb>i8042?
00:14<neophobia-irc>82801
00:15<neophobia-irc>hm i actually think it's under ttys0 it's just not working
00:16<neophobia-irc>because screen doesn't terminate when i open s0
00:16<twb>neophobia-irc: you're running "screen /dev/ttyS0" ?
00:17<neophobia-irc>sudo screen /dev/ttys0 9600
00:17<neophobia-irc>and it's staying open
00:17<neophobia-irc>i'm just not getting any data
00:17<twb>What's plugged into the other end?
00:17<twb>Are you sure that baud rate is correct?
00:18<neophobia-irc>http://www.leapsecond.com/tbolt-faq.htm
00:18<neophobia-irc>yes
00:18<neophobia-irc>i'm fairly sure
00:18<neophobia-irc>i would still see some noise right
00:18<twb>Eek
00:18<neophobia-irc>twb: ikr
00:18<neophobia-irc>lol
00:19<neophobia-irc>well the other one i had worked with a serial display i had
00:19<twb>We have GPS time sources but they just have ethernet on the other end IIUC
00:19<neophobia-irc>i didn't test this one
00:19<neophobia-irc>ah yeah
00:19<neophobia-irc>i have much more needy requirments lol
00:19<twb>Had huge problems because the f*ing idiot on site didn't plug in the antenna
00:19<neophobia-irc>ah
00:20<neophobia-irc>yeah gps does require that whole s thing :)
00:20<neophobia-irc>i'll just have to test it at work
00:20<neophobia-irc>to make sure it works

00:23<mauro25987>help me
00:23<mauro25987>I use BIND
00:23<mauro25987>?
00:23<twb>mauro25987: yes, that is a problem :-)
00:24<neophobia-irc>twb: lol
00:26-!-phrost [~oftc-webi@c-67-167-134-179.hsd1.mi.comcast.net] has joined #debian
00:27<phrost>hello all
00:27<neophobia-irc>phrost: hi
00:28<phrost>So I've got a question about gnome on first boot of clean install of debian 8.4.0.
00:28<neophobia-irc> /win7
00:29-!-loft [~pico@4MJAAFEZ3.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
00:30<phrost>After finishing the installation and rebooting, it booted to CLI. I login as the standard user I setup, as well as the root, but can't seem to execute gnome environment.
00:30<phrost>It's a separate box from what I'm using to chat with you all, so I can work on it atm. Did I just not install GNOME or something via guided installer?
00:31<neophobia-irc>hm
00:31<neophobia-irc>it should have installed gnome
00:31<phrost>Right?! lol
00:32<neophobia-irc>have you tried running startx
00:32<neophobia-irc>it may be an issue with you enviroment
00:33<neophobia-irc>you can also always run apt-get update && apt-get install gnome
00:33<neophobia-irc>to see if that works
00:33<twb>phrost: if you're comfortable on the CLI, you can try to investigate
00:33<phrost>Well, that is what I wasn't sure of. I am used to minimal suse commands, etc. I use it at work, but I want to teach myself more about debian from a sys admin stand point. I want to learn from scratch. :)
00:33<twb>phrost: if it's a fresh install, you could just give up and reinstall
00:33-!-Casper [~Instantbi@00021b2d.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
00:33<neophobia-irc>twb: that's a good idea
00:34<twb>Whether you get a GUI, and which one, depends on how you install debian. Most often you'll get GNOME, but if you do an expert install, it's untickable
00:34<neophobia-irc>did you use the net installer or the dvd ?
00:34<twb>That is, you can opt out of it
00:34<phrost>Awesome, thanks for the tips. I know that I could install it via apt command, but I have no wired connection; only the wireless, which I haven't setup yet.
00:35<phrost>I'm safe to assume it's possible to setup the wireless controller and connect it via CLI?
00:35<twb>There is (was?) a bug in Debian 8 where installing without a GUI over wifi would not leave you with a working wifi
00:35<phrost>If so, is there a good command to help get me started besides --help
00:35<twb>Due to lack of Network-Manager or something
00:36<phrost>Ah, gotcha. Knowing my luck, that'd be me hahaha
00:36<twb>phrost: I have some notes here: http://cyber.com.au/~twb/snarf/wifi.txt
00:36<phrost>Awesome! Thank you very much. :) I'll start there and get messy until I hammer it out and learn.
00:37<phrost>Do you like electronica? Like house or techno?
00:37<twb>My notes are basically paraphrased from what's in /usr/share/doc/wpa_supplicant/README.Debian or something
00:38<phrost>No worries. That'll get me going I believe, looking at it now.
00:39-!-thrownaway [ungali@0001c6e3.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:39<phrost>If you do like electronica, feel free to listen to some of my mixes. I spin drum n bass, tech-house, pretty much anything. http://www.soundcloud.com/djphrost
00:40<phrost>I'll hop back in here if I can't figure it out. Thank you @twb and @neophobia-irc

04:16<twb>vortek: there are several ways it can be blanking
04:17<twb>For the xset part, you want BOTH of these: xset -dpms; xset s off
04:17<twb>They can also be done in xorg.conf.d
04:18<twb>Those can temporarily disabled AUTOMATICALLY by e.g. vlc/mplayer, if your end goal is "don't blank the screen while I'm watching a movie"

11:04<dpkg>Selected packages intended for the Debian 9 "Stretch" release but recompiled for use with "Jessie" (8.x) can be found in the "jessie-backports" repository. Note that jessie-backports are on the regular mirror network, not on backports.debian.org. A suitable line for your sources.list is «deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie-backports main». Also ask me about <bdo>.
11:04<petn-randall>mozilla_Lille: No, nothing like that. jessie-backports provides newer versions of select software, you can add that repository and cherry-pick single packages from there. In this case a newer kernel.

15:23<geekuser>OK. Thanks
15:23<appl3s>salih-emin: So if I am going to compile from source, it's best to change the versioning scheme? (e.g. simply prefix my name or something to it) Any idea how I should do that?
15:24<salih-emin>yes that would do the trick
15:24<salih-emin>also you can lock the verison
15:25-!-JohnML [~siducer@5.146.6.222] has joined #debian
15:25<salih-emin>but I am sure that what you do is not a good idea from security point of view
15:25<appl3s>?
15:25<appl3s>I plan to manually update the package when there's a new release if that's what you mean
15:25<salih-emin>oh ok then
15:26<appl3s>:)

15:26<salih-emin>you should keep a constant eye on CVE's
15:26<appl3s>ok
15:26<appl3s>BTW this is what you meant by locking version, right? `sudo apt-mark hold package_name`
15:27<salih-emin>yeap
15:28-!-JohnML [~siducer@5.146.6.222] has quit []
15:28<appl3s>I'll still be able to manually update the package even with that in place, correct? I mean, that only affects `apt-get update && apt-get upgrade` so I should still be able to compile and apply updates to the package even when it's locked, right?

21:32*plugwash doesn't see what this has to do with routing, both addresses are on the same adaptor on the local link, I want to make sure all outgoing connections are sourced from the same address while adding extra addresses for incoming connections
21:33<abrotman>plugwash: you mean you just want to be able to say not to use it for outbound?
21:33<plugwash>right
21:34<plugwash>I understand in the kernel there is a "deprecated" flag that does this but I can't seem to find any way to manually turn it on
