00:49<dtw>In Jessie /etc/default/tmpfs with RAMTMP=yes doesn't make /tmp a tmpfs so I use /etc/fstab: "tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev,size=20% 0 0". It works but is there some other higher-level way to configure this?

00:52<somiaj>dtw: systemd doesn't use all of the /etc/defaults with its init scripts like sysvinit. Unsure if there is a way to configure this in systemd or just enter in in fstab is best
00:55-!-sunilmohan [~quassel@106.66.137.29] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:57<somiaj>https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2014/07/msg01314.html
00:57<somiaj>dtw: there is the answer, 'systemctl enable tmp.mount'
00:57-!-pencilandpaper [~penciland@dynamic-acs-24-101-226-127.zoominternet.net] has quit [Quit: WeeChat 1.6-dev]
00:58<dtw>somiaj, but tmp.mount is auto-generated from fstab if there is something to be mounted to /tmp.
00:59-!-sunilmohan [~quassel@106.66.137.29] has joined #debian
01:00<dtw>systemd-fstab-generator makes it: /run/systemd/generator/tmp.mount
01:00<somiaj>I haven't messed with it, I'm only posting the response I found.
01:01<somiaj>and not surprised, systemd is what reads fstab and decides what to do, it may see that and just run tmp.mount instead
01:02<calebwill>dtw: there is also a /lib/systemd/system/tmp.mount
01:03<somiaj>calebwill: that is what we were talking about
01:03<calebwill>somiaj: dtw sound the one in /run/systemd/generator/tmp.mount which would be generated from fstab, but there's also a tmp.mount unit in /lib

01:05<dtw>calebwill, indeed Jessie has /lib/.../tmp.mount. I've also testing here in virtual machine and that file doesn't exist.
01:06<calebwill>dtw: i think fstab is a better place for this anyways than a mount unit that gets enabled
01:07<dtw>Yes. systemd manual itself says that fstab is preferred.
01:08<dtw>"In general, configuring mount points through /etc/fstab is the preferred approach." (man systemd.mount)

14:09<petn-randall>dancingd3mon: As a rule of thumb, never run a script without fully understanding what it does. This counts double for scripts run as root. If you're overwriting any files that come with Debian packages, you're already heading in a direction where you're hosing your system.
14:09<calebwill>dancingd3mon: in theory you could repair it, but it would be a lot of manual work tracing down manually installed files and coaxing dpkg to reinstall python packages. it would be very time consuming and difficult

14:14<petn-randall>dancingd3mon: I don't really think that distro-hopping will solve your problem. Why were you actually updating python in the first place?
14:15<calebwill>dancingd3mon: the tricky thing is that if you're not quite sure what you're doing you can easily make things worse at this point. it's a difficult thing to guide someone through. it seems like postinst scripts for packages are failing because commands they assume will be there are missing
14:16<dancingd3mon>one script that was trying to log into some site it keeps saying post request fail. It's a script to download some data from some site...It works in windows with python 2.7 installed but on debian and python 2.7 it failed...

14:19<dancingd3mon>Is there like a guide or something that I can use to fix this? even if it took me 24 hours...
14:19<calebwill>dancingd3mon: my advice is stick to Debian packages as much as possible, avoid adding repositories, if you need something that isn't in Debian, install it to /usr/local, /opt, or run it from some user's home directory. Just make sure it doesn't interfere with the OS and its package system
14:20<dancingd3mon>everything i try to install is done using sudo apt-get install packagename
14:20<dancingd3mon>my friend made me unable to view the root files for this purpose and when i installed python
14:20<dancingd3mon>ugh I dont even know what I'm saying but I never messed with the root files...
14:21<calebwill>well except that time that python got installed with './configure --prefix=/usr"

14:21<calebwill>that means configure the build system to install python from source in /usr (instead of the default /usr/local).
14:22<petn-randall>calebwill: To break your system you must have run that as root.
14:22<calebwill>if the source that python was built and installed from is still on the system, it might have a "make uninstall" target. That could just break more things.

19:51<R4F_Debian>Hi all, I'm having an issue here with dvd drive; it's regognized by the system, but 'mount' command doesn't regognize and consequently, doesn't mount the drive - http://paste.debian.net/738064/
19:53<mtn>R4F_Debian: what is on the disk you are trying to mount?
19:54<R4F_Debian>Hi mtn ! Well, it's a video disc, there is just a movie on the media. It was opening fine before, don't know what kind of mistake I've made here, mtn
19:54<mtn>R4F_Debian: you don't mount movies, you just play them. unless you mean a movie file, so just a data disk

19:58<R4F_Debian>ok mtn, thanks for information. I inserted a media on dvd drive I've got here in my computer. I try to mount the file system /dev/sr0
19:59<R4F_Debian>its mount point is '/media/cdrom0'
19:59<mtn>R4F_Debian: ok, what is on the disk that is in the drive. does it have a file system on it?
19:59<R4F_Debian>but I can't,
20:00<R4F_Debian>mtn, I don't know to answer you this. I've burnt this media and there is a movie burnt in it, but don't know if there is any file system there
20:01<mtn>R4F_Debian: if it is a movie, you can't mount it. if it is a data disk, with a file system, you can mount it
20:01<mtn>R4F_Debian: you can't mount music cds, either
20:02<R4F_Debian>ok mtn, but, please, why it was automatically available before, and now I can't ? I remember it appeared a box asking me which application I would like to run it. I chose vlc and opened the movie fine
20:03<mtn>R4F_Debian: well, that is different than mounting. so, the real problem is that the disk is not recognized by the system as having a movie on it?
20:03<mtn>R4F_Debian: try putting in a commercial movie disk and see what happens
20:03<blast007>we don't even know that much - all we know is that the automatic prompt didn't show up
20:03<mtn>guessing is fun!
20:03<blast007>R4F_Debian: have you tried manually launching VLC and having it try to play the movie?
20:04<R4F_Debian>mtn, I will have a lunch here and come back in few minutes. Thanks a lot for your Support and Assitance (Glad to see you again here ! ) :)
