00:00<nicolas17>what would "not live" mean then?
00:00<nicolas17>run the installer?
00:00<sqredreaper>i tried to do it the normal way and add the boot flag to the first partition but it wouldn't boot
00:00<nicolas17>what did you put in it?
00:01<sqredreaper>i don't remember it was a random laptop at work
00:01<nicolas17>is there a Linux system and a bootloader in the flash drive?
00:01<sqredreaper>i didn't have time to test it after i made it so im trying it again
00:02<sqredreaper>i just need the tables
00:02<nicolas17>what do you want to boot?
00:02<sqredreaper>debian
00:02<qaz>use dd
00:02<nicolas17>okay, so did you copy a debian image into the flash drive?
00:02<sqredreaper>im doing the network installer now
00:03<qaz>dd of=path/to/iso if=/dev/sd
00:03<sqredreaper>thats not the problem
00:03<nicolas17>the iso image includes the partition table...
00:04<sqredreaper>i need to know the exact partition scheme i should be using
00:04<sqredreaper>i can get he installer running no problem
00:04<sqredreaper>its how i should set it up

00:05<sqredreaper>i can boot elementary just fine from one of my hdd's in my desktop but i need it to work from a standalone flash drive
00:05<nicolas17>that's the *definition* of a live pendrive
00:05<nicolas17>but you said not live
00:05<nicolas17>so I don't know what you want
00:06<sqredreaper>when i make a live drive nothing is saved
00:07-!-bpaterni [~bpaterni@h213.230.16.98.dynamic.ip.windstream.net] has left #debian []
00:07<nicolas17>looks like you just run the installer (from some different media of course) and tell it to use the pendrive as if it was the hard disk
00:08<sqredreaper>when i make a live flash drive i don't have to set it up, i just use rufus...
00:08<sqredreaper>which is why im here to learn how to manually partition it
00:10<nicolas17>run the installer, from a CD or another flash drive, and install into the wanted flash drive instead of the hard disk
00:11<sqredreaper>i got that part, how exactly do i make it bootable, where do i set the boot flag and how do i make sure the bootloader is in the correct place
00:12<nicolas17>the installer should do that, just as it obviously does when you install into a hard disk...
00:13<sqredreaper>i did not i use different distros..... can any one else help me with manually partitioning linux?

16:37<supaman>timothywcrane: when someone outside (like me) would try to access your server with your external static IP (or hostname if you have DNS registered and own a hostname) then your router needs to know that he should forward that request to your server. For that you need to create some kind of tunnel through your router which can be simple but can be complicated, depends on the router.

22:49<blast007>!non-free sources
22:49<dpkg>Edit /etc/apt/sources.list, ensure that the two main Debian mirror lines end with "main contrib non-free" rather than just "main", then «aptitude update».
