01:01<veggi3s0>i keep on trying to install a new debian to my laptop using yumi, but i have difficulty, what are you guys using to make a boot usb debian disk from windows?
01:02<jmcnaught>!win32diskimager
01:02<dpkg>win32diskimager is much more reliable than <unetbootin> for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show our .iso images. See <usb install> and <install debian> for further details.
01:02<veggi3s0>thanks
01:02<jmcnaught>veggi3s0: ^^^ this is the tool recommended in the install manual: https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual

01:04<arthurBot>dpkg, more reliable than unetbootin in term of security ?
01:04<dpkg>arthurBot: I'm not sure, is it larger than a breadbox?
01:04<jmcnaught>arthurBot: dpkg is a bot
01:04<arthurBot>ahah nice
01:04<veggi3s0>what kind of security do you need to boot a usb?
01:05<jmcnaught>it's more reliable in the sense that it doesn't butcher the layout of the Debian hybrid ISO, which can cause strange bugs during the install
01:05<arthurBot>hmm ok

01:10<veggi3s0>jmcnaught,its installing now, i got passed the mount cdrom , that was holding me back with yumi
01:10<veggi3s0>thanks

01:11<jmcnaught>you're welcome
01:12<arthurBot>actualy i was here for an install issue. I made brand new debian jessie stable install on a 120G SSD hard drive with my "/home" and "/"on different partition, and encrypted the whole thing . But my "/" is only 10G. I tried to do the install again on graphical expert mode but couldnt find a way to choose the size of the partition. Do you know if it possible to choose the partition size on the installation wizard
01:12<arthurBot>?
01:14<arthurBot>Better: do you know a way to resize the partition, during or after the debian installation ?
01:15<veggi3s0>i use one partition for everything, if you want to get into encrpytion then you could make file containers or files that contain all directories in such with versacrypt, or if youw ant to make a directory that is encrypted you can use enc fs, however i am not sure manypeople use the home encrypted directory unless you want a headache and stress
01:15<veggi3s0>you can do encryption separate from the installation process
01:16<veggi3s0>it would be more portable too and could move the files and direcotires related to your encrpytion around
01:16<arthurBot>yeah thats true
01:17-!-Pommesgabel [~Kalado@06SAAEJUI.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
01:17-!-raindog [~Rehevkor@tor-exit.brmlab.cz] has joined #debian
01:17<jmcnaught>arthurBot: the installer can delete and then create new partitions with new sizes. you could also try using gparted to change partition sizes (after a backup). To shrink a partition its filesystem cannot be mounted so you may need to do this from a live disk
01:17<veggi3s0>arthurBot, a versacrypt file container is a file, of say 10gb or even 200 mb, and then when you mount that file, it has as many directories and files as you want. encfs on the other hand is a directory with a bunch of obsfuscation and i used it to upload files to cloud drives like amazon that offer unlimited space
01:18<jmcnaught>arthurBot: putting everything in one partition is a good option, or using LVM and leaving some space unallocated is another more flexible option
01:18<arthurBot>wait, im googling so much stuff right now ahah
01:19<jmcnaught>arthurBot: you may also consider leaving some of the SSD unpartitioned to replace the need to use trim/discard
01:19<veggi3s0>arthurBot, if you have important files you make a file container with super strong encryption like versacrypt, otherwise you don't need to put stuff in your root directory
01:19<veggi3s0>i mean home directoryu
01:21<jmcnaught>the dm-crypt/luks encryption done in the install is pretty decent for most people. cryptsetup can also unlock truecrypt volumes, but i don't think versacrypt is in Debian
01:22<veggi3s0>i use versacrypt in debian yes, but it isn't in the repos, it is a fork of the truecrypt that isn't maintained anymore
01:22<veggi3s0>i mean truecyrpt isnt maintained, versacrypt is
01:23<arthurBot>ok, i still have to read a bunch of stuff. but i realy need all my debian encrypted
01:24<veggi3s0>i have a VM inside a versacrypt container
01:24-!-marxistvegan [~quassel@c-50-169-194-217.hsd1.ma.comcast.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:24<jmcnaught>arthurBot: using the guided partitioning option for encrypted LVM all in one parition is pretty straightforward
01:25<veggi3s0>i mean that is what you could do, make a vm inside a versacrypt container
01:25<arthurBot>veggi3s0, yeah thats a ggod idea

01:27<jmcnaught>veggi3s0: the encryption configured in the debian installer straightforward and just works for most people and is generally what we support here
01:28-!-paxmark9 [~paxtormar@198.144.158.157] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
01:28<veggi3s0>yes i use versacrypt, and that is their website. before versacrypt, i used truecrypt, but it is no longer maintained, versacrypt has more features than truecrypt such as being able to choose the iteration amount
01:28<arthurBot>jmcnaught, by straightforward, you mean easy to use ?
01:29<jmcnaught>arthurBot: yeah the debian installer sets it all up for you
01:29<jmcnaught>arthurBot: then it asks for the passphrase when you boot or come out of hibernation
01:29<veggi3s0>jmcnaught, i have debian as a host machine on my laptop, and on my desktop i have it as a guest machine within windows
01:30<jmcnaught>it's also supported software in debian, doesn't require using third party packages or software
01:30<veggi3s0>i dont use whonix except as a gateway if i want to use it, however i dont really use the workstation anymore
01:31<veggi3s0>jmcnaught, what program does debian os use to encrypt its fs them
01:31<veggi3s0>then
01:31<veggi3s0>i am unfamiliar with it
01:31<jmcnaught>veggi3s0: it uses dm-crypt
01:34<veggi3s0>i see, and the wiki says you can access it with librecrypt and windows
01:34<arthurBot>Ok so i think ill do a new install and i will put home and root directory on same partition and let the install wizard do the encryption
01:35-!-lambda-11235 [~Lambda@67.54.201.145] has quit [Quit: Bye]
01:35<arthurBot>thank you guys for the support
01:35<veggi3s0>arthurBot, yes that is a good idea, whatever encryption plan you have is good, but having one partition is a lot of stress in the future because you run out of space or you might not or do
01:36<veggi3s0>having one partition is a lot less stress imean
01:36<arthurBot>oh ok
01:37<veggi3s0>arthurBot, so you are not doing whole disk encryption, just the home directory?
01:37<arthurBot>whole disk
01:37<veggi3s0>okay, good choice
01:38<arthurBot>dont do stuff half way ! ;)

04:05<grove>Why wouldn't they, that's the point of the programs that take that lock

04:06<grove>Any way to make such a program not take that lock is a way to f*ck your system

04:14<dtw>nicu, you should understand that the package manager is one database that has a state or states. Only one instance can modify state at one particular moment; others have to wait (and that's implemented with lock).

04:20<dtw>Please understand the concept. For example, you can't install, remove and reconfigure the same package at the same time because different tools would be doing mutually conflicting things to the same set of files. That's why the database must be locked and the lock is freed after one instance is ready.

09:38<qmanfroi>I have a problem with update-rc.d and change kill priority of a daemon, I make my tests on debian 7 and 8. I would like to configure zabbix-agent daemon to stop in first when system shutdown to avoid useless alert from monitoring. So I try to use update-rc.d command to do that but regardless I try, there is no change on file system side.
09:38<qmanfroi>for example : "update-rc.d zabbix-agent defaults" gives :

09:41<qmanfroi>So when enable script by defaults I get symlink like configured in the initd script (logic)
09:41<petn-randall>qmanfroi: Debian 7 runs by default on sysv-init, Debian 8 by default on systemd. Also, most init scripts have LSB headers that declare dependencies on other things.
09:42<qmanfroi>but for debian 7 (sysv-init), update-rc.d should works no ?
09:42<petn-randall>qmanfroi: The 'defaults' option takes no parameters.
09:43<petn-randall>qmanfroi: Check 'man update-rc.d' for the details.
09:43<qmanfroi>update-rc.d [-n] name defaults [NN | SS KK]
09:43<qmanfroi>seems take arguments
09:44<petn-randall>qmanfroi: On what release?

09:44<qmanfroi>Linux debian-wheezy 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.78-1 x86_64 GNU/Linux
09:45<qmanfroi>in the man I understand that first arg of defaults take the start priority and second take the kill priority
09:45<qmanfroi>I also tested custom config like : "update-rc.d apache2 stop 00 0 . stop 02 1 6 . start 15 2 3 4 5"
09:46<qmanfroi>but same result
09:46<petn-randall>qmanfroi: That option doesn't work on jessie. But nevermind. 'K01' means that it will get killed first. So what exactly happens in your monitoring?
09:46<qmanfroi>@petn-randall, thanks for your answers
09:47<qmanfroi>so I cannot have a K00 ?
09:47<qmanfroi>my situation is the following : I host instance on ec2 (aws)
09:47-!-Swompie` [~JWilbur@06SAAEKEY.tor-irc.dnsbl.oftc.net] has quit []
09:47<qmanfroi>my instance(s) is part of autoscaling group
09:47<qmanfroi>so sometimes an instance is deleted automatically
09:48<qmanfroi>when it happens, the zabbix agent trace in error the other daemons stopping
09:48<qmanfroi>(like apache, nginx ...)
09:48<petn-randall>qmanfroi: K01 is the _first_ thing that gets stopped. Your assumptions on why the monitoring reports something is wrong.
09:48<qmanfroi>I hope I was clear in my explanations
09:49<qmanfroi>ok thanks
09:50<qmanfroi>so may be rather than decrease priority of zabbix-agentd, should I increase the priority of others daemons (those which trigger alert on zabbix) ?
09:50<petn-randall>qmanfroi: I don't know about zabbix (I use icinga/nagios myself), but with icinga by default 4 consecutive checks have to fail for it to be reported. I assume if you do 2 consecutive checks as threshold, it should be enough to stop any false positives.
09:51<petn-randall>qmanfroi: Since everything gets stopped in parallel, it should only be a few seconds apart.

09:54<qmanfroi>zabbix triggers the last state when shutdown, so even if the service have only reached one or less than 5 alerts
09:54<petn-randall>qmanfroi: So does the check on i.e. apache2 fail 5 times in a row on shutdown?
09:54<qmanfroi>zabbix will automatically get the alert when it stops
09:55<qmanfroi>no here, it fails only one time
09:55<qmanfroi>but zabbix behavior is stupid
09:55<qmanfroi>and it remembers the last state
09:55<qmanfroi>and when it stops it triggers alerts for last state (service stoped => error)
09:56<qmanfroi>so the anti flood protection does not work for zabbix
09:56<qmanfroi>in contrary of others monitoring tools like icinga2
09:56<petn-randall>qmanfroi: I would research on how to fix zabbix first. The other option would be to add service dependencies for zabbix to _all_ services that are monitored, but that is a pain to do.

09:58<qmanfroi>unfortunately, I would like to do that on system side only because I already try to find zabbix solution without success
09:58<qmanfroi>but I totally understand your remark
09:58<qmanfroi>And agree with it
09:58<qmanfroi>so for you, the best way is not to play with priority but rather play with dependencies ?
09:59<petn-randall>qmanfroi: So the way to go would be to edit /etc/init.d/zabbix-agent, and add a dependency to all services in the LSB headers.
09:59<qmanfroi>understood
09:59<petn-randall>qmanfroi: Then if you re-run 'update-rc.d zabbix-agent defaults' it should put it to K01, and everything else to K02.
09:59<qmanfroi>OK
09:59<qmanfroi>thanks for this explanation
10:00<petn-randall>qmanfroi: But if on Debian jessie you have services that also have systemd unit files, you have to do the same there, too.
10:00<petn-randall>qmanfroi: Which is a completely config format, though.
10:00<qmanfroi>so I will need to make a conditional script (or ansible / salt) to manage debian 7 (initd) and debian 8 (systemd differently)
10:01<petn-randall>qmanfroi: Maybe, I'm not sure if systemd in Debian jessie handles that gracefully. I'm just saying that there might be a pitfall to consider :)

10:41<jmux>plasmoduck: no offence. I just looked up the program and was asking a question. Currently I believe there is no way to do the mapping.
10:42<plasmoduck>jmux, sorry about that. I hope you figure it out.
10:42<jmux>plasmoduck: my current solution uses evrouter and a script. There is a nber-merged patch for mappings here: http://www.thenautilus.net/cgit/xf86-input-evdev/commit/?h=code-remap-2.9.2
10:44<jmux>plasmoduck: nber => never
10:45<jmux>plasmoduck: but there seem to be no way to do this in the console level (except I could change the key inside my kernel module)

20:24<arthurBot>for example i have a terminal on the taking the half left side of my screen. I want to do a command ( let say foo ) so that when I type "foo firefox" on my terminal, the terminal is remplaced by a firefox window taking the half left side of my screen
20:26<somiaj>arthurBot: give an actual command you will want to type. But sounds like what you need is in terms of your window manager and how windows are configured. If using a desktop I'm unsure what sort of tools they have for this, but some window managers are capable of being programed to start windows in specific location/size
20:26<arthurBot>but I got an answer in other IRC that is not possible because an application need a new window to start. The only think i could do is get my terminal position and start a new windows with those positoins
20:26<somiaj>arthurBot: kinda sounds like you want a tiling window manager, but unsure if tiling has this specific feature.
20:27<somiaj>arthurBot: well each app is going to have their own window, but a window mananger can manage the windows to iconfiy (minimize/hide) one and put the other one in the place you want it.
20:27<arthurBot>yeah i use i3
20:28<somiaj>I would ask the people who use i3 about if it is possible to control window placment/swaping
20:28<arthurBot>Im studying the doc to see if they have this king of featur
20:28<arthurBot>thank you guys :)
