06:54<jelly>FLD: no processes have to use the pivoted root for you to be able to umount it, this basically means you have to reexec whichever init you have. I strongly suggest not doing this on a production system before having worked out all the kinks in a test environment
06:55<FLD>jelly: plus i'd have to first rsync a live filesystem to have something to pivot in-to
06:55<FLD>i think at least mysqld would have to be stopped for that to work

08:04<sebamt>Hey, I have a headless SBC with two WLAN cards that I'd like to "benchmark" using iperf3. They're supporting 802.11n and I get good results when I iperf on one card at a time (70-80Mbps) but it dramatically drops when I iperf both at the same time. i tried several configurations, connected to different SSID or generating two APs and connecting to them from two other computers, etc... but no good result. I've been told there might be
08:04<sebamt>sth wrong with the interrupts but I don't see what could be wrong. her's a picture /proc/interrupts https://postimg.org/image/ur65ti1wx/

10:43<dpkg>The "Drive" in Solid-state Drive (SSD) is really a misnomer. SSD storage is basically a huge block of RAM chips that functions like a hard drive. 15:45<awal1>das_boot, debian installer will only format the partitions you asked him for. apart swap, if it's there yet, you must tell the installer to not use it
15:46<awal1>if you dont request that, it will use it as its swap too
15:47<das_brot>okay
15:47<awal1>you end with shared swap, and you will have to fix that in fstab for make the old debian able to use that swap too

17:17<Hatsjoe>mdx0 if you have no network card, you have no other option than to continue without network stuff loaded.. Just make sure you have an offline install disk, and not a net install
17:20<Hatsjoe>Mr_Q most make files have a deb-pkg target, so to create a .deb package, one would execute "make build" & "make deb-pkg", depending on the makefile. You can check the makefile by opening it in a text editor (file is called Makefile).
17:21<Mr_Q>hm i'll try that out

22:14<awal1>the installer should have created a specific small partion, forgot how it's called, if you use automated install; if manual, so you have to create it
22:14<awal1>when is uefi machine ^
22:14<ragesoss>I created a boot partition of 200MB and set that to /boot, per https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Thinkpad/X1%20Carbon%204thGen%20PCIe_SSD/jessie
22:15<ragesoss>the files are there, and will boot if I select them manually from a grub command line after booting the installer USB key.
22:15<somiaj>are you sure you did efi install? The installer can boot both efi and legacy, and will install the appropriate mode. Many bios can boot in both modes, so you ahve to be careful how you boot it.

22:16<ragesoss>I get a message with grub-install that says x86_64-efi
22:16<awal1>not in uefi system now; i have bios; but tried with uefi in another uefi machine and the installer did what it should for uefi
22:16<ragesoss>I've had other uefi systems that worked without issue.
22:16<grantwu>I'm having a strange issue with scp, I get ssh: Could not resolve hostname engine01.club.cc.cmu: Name or service not known
22:16<ragesoss>this one seems to have some extra windows tricks.
22:16<grantwu>oh, I'm stupid

22:18<awal1>ragesoss, in the bios, usually you have to disable only the secure boot feature, and the installer (amd64 - and probably i386 too) should do the job
22:19<awal1>I may have a chance, but debian installer and all it's pkgs have always worked very well in all my machines (uefi+bios)
22:19<awal1>and all debian pkgs ^
22:19<ragesoss>I've disabled secure boot.
22:21<awal1>reset uefi to defaults and only disable secure boot, the amd64 installer should do the trick just fine, unless your machine is very new edge and have some specific stuff

22:31<demo>hey I'm trying to install mx15 based on debian I need help with the partitioning it doesn't let me select primary partition when I'm trying to set up the linux swap partition

22:36<demo>mx 15 is based on debian testing I believe
22:37<awal1>demo, this channel is debian, pure debian, exclusive
22:37<awal1>but tell me, your machine is bios or uefi?
22:38<demo>it's brand new so I'm not sure. I think bios
22:40<demo>the exact message I get from gparted is "invalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sdb"
22:41<awal1>if it's uefi, with gpt partition table you can install many system and have dozens of partitions; but if it's bios, I believe you will not be able to install another system alongside windows, bcoz bios can have only 4 primary partitions. windows, factory install, have 4 primary partitions. you will have to delete one, make it logical then install another system in it, I recommend you debian
22:41<awal1>is that machine windows 8, 10...?
22:42<awal1>if it's win 8 +, I guess it's uefi, not bios
22:43<demo>windows 7
22:43<awal1>bios so, I believe
22:43<demo>yeah
22:44<awal1>you will have to reinstall windows, no more then 3 parimary partitions, the free space for logical and in it mx15 or whatever gnu/linux OS you want

22:48<dpkg>i don't know, demo
22:49<awal1>if my memory is good, demo, create a free space, resizing your big windows partition, then reset your windows to factory setting (recover it), it should reinstall and leave the free space free, the you put your linux
