09:58<Darien>Hello, yesterday I installed Debian on my computer (amd64) and through the installation it asked for any extra programs I would like installed and I installed cinnamon along with it. Then when trying to startup it says cinnamon has crashed and asks if I want to restart it. If I click yes it doesn't work. If I click no then it just stays on the debian wallpaper and does nothing else. Also it didn't find internet drives during install.
09:59<Darien>Any ideas?
09:59<blast007>what video card do you have?

10:03<anonymous>thats my first visit. trying to understand
10:03<blast007>Darien: perhaps that card is too new for nouveau (or at least the nouveau in Jessie). Might need to install the proprietary drivers. https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Version_352.79_.28via_jessie-backports.29
10:04<Darien>How can I install them?
10:04<blast007>go to that link
10:04<Darien>Because the desktop isn't even showing up.
10:04<Darien>k
10:04<blast007>oh
10:04<Darien>It's just a picture of the logo
10:04<blast007>well, you'll do it from the terminal instead of the GUI. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in there.
10:04<Darien>That's a square on my screen.
10:05<Darien>Ok, let me see if that works.

10:15<blast007>Darien: no, not a terminal in your GUI, just a text console
10:15<blast007>press Ctrl+Alt+F1, and you should see a black screen with white text, and a login prompt
10:15<Darien>well when I do Ctrl+Alt+F1 ny screen just goes black and I don't see anything else.

13:23<Texou>oops
13:23<Texou>is there some way to empty the cache while packages are installing? I mean: .deb is removed as soon as no longer useful.
13:24<petn-randall>Texou: You can do stepwise installations and then run 'apt-get clean' after every run. But the right solution should be to provide enough disk space, apt doesn't use that much.
13:24<mtn>Texou: having the debs cached can be very useful ;)
13:25<Texou>ok
13:25<Texou>mtn: well, I have never really needed it

14:59<petn-randall>nerd811: I doubt you'll get a measurable difference between the two. Both just load the kernel + initramfs and hand over to the kernel. So that step is I/O bound, nothing more that the bootloader does performance-wise.
15:00<nerd811>petn-randall: Hum so I should probably just change the grub conf to boot instantly rather than wait a few seconds
15:00<petn-randall>nerd811: You want to look at 'man bootctl' though if you want to give it a spin. It adds a bootloader to the EFI system partition which you can select in your BIOS.
15:01<petn-randall>nerd811: That will probably give you a more measurable difference, yeah.
15:01<nerd811>petn-randall : and the boot speed between legacy and uefi is the same? if so I will boot just trough legacy
15:01<petn-randall>nerd811: No, legacy will be likely slower, and also comes with a few downsides.
15:02<nerd811>petn-randall: ok will check those thanks, I will see what can be done if I run into trouble will ask for help again
15:04<petn-randall>nerd811: Sure, though I wouldn't worry too much about boot time. If you can shave off half a second, but spend 2 hours doing research, how much of your lifetime have you actually saved?
15:05<petn-randall>nerd811: I'd only play around with it if it's either dead-slow, or you've got a chance to improve it by a big margin.
15:05<nerd811>petn-randall: yep , I just have enough free time plus I have an ssd so there probably wont be much of a difference
15:06<petn-randall>nerd811: Yeah, so you can try the 'fast boot' option in your EFI BIOS, and maybe setting the timeout of grub to something short (not sure if 0 works).
15:06<nerd811>petn-randall: yep will try those

15:15<sney>that depends on what your vendor is doing that it calls those things

15:16<nerd811>sney: I no longer use the HDD that came with it i currently use a sandisk ssd plus 120GB
15:17<sney>nah, dell is all over the map since their designs come from everyone before they get a dell logo. 'fast boot support' is probably a bios-enabled cache of the OS kernel and targeted drivers, not unlike what linux already does with the initrd, but likely inaccessible without dell's (or samsung's or msi's or whoever's) documentation on how to actually use that bios function.
15:18<sney>usb hotkey is near meaningless. that could be so many things.
15:18<nerd811>sney: Hum so pretty much useless for my use I guess?
15:18<sney>yeah. but with a modern laptop and a SSD you're not going to be complaining about performance anyway

17:33<Guest4147>and would it be wrong to use plop bootmgr to usb boot when it is not supported in my bios?
17:33<Guest4147>(for the install that is)
17:35<awal1>Guest4147, just burn your iso image to somewhere in your home folder and cp it to usb. debian iso images are designed to support that just well
