00:51<whelm>yeah I see nothing resembling an IP under wlan0
00:52<Arcade>Ok. I assume you use a router to connect to the internet? you might try and reboot it. It looks like dhcp is not even being recognized for some reason from the router
00:55<whelm>I'm connected to that router through this device. but I can attempt that
00:56<Arcade>go ahead and try it. I am thinking it may be something else like a driver problem.

04:55<RattusRattus>hi guys - I am not asking HOW to do this at the moment, I just want to check limited understanding is sane. I want to increase usable bandwidth between a couple of servers that will work closly togeather. Link aggrigation would appear to be the way to go. If I am correct however this only helps for multiple network connections. i.e a single TCP connection will, once established, only use one PHY f

I don't think I am encumbered by limitations of a spacific make / model / feature set on a packet switch because I can bond interfaces togeather and wire machine to machine (rarther than through a switch). so slightly off centre for topic, but not off :-)

06:42<petn-randall>RattusRattus: Yes, it is round-robin per paket. So with 2x 1Gbit/s you will effectively double your bandwidth, at the cost of possible out of order reception of those packets. This is not a problem with TCP, but _might_ be a problem for some UDP scenarios.

10:13<NewBee>when i run sudo apt-get install git it says that it is on newest version, but it's actually 2.1.4. How can i update git? I am running debian 8.5
10:15<jmcnaught>NewBee: this is normal for a Debian Stable release. During the development of a Debian release all versions of all software are frozen. The freeze for Debian 8 happened in November 2014. There are only a few exceptions for software that needs newer versions for security problems that cannot be backported
10:15-!-vivek [~vivek@0001171f.user.oftc.net] has joined #debian
10:16<jmcnaught>NewBee: for some packages there are backported versions in jessie-backports, but not for git
10:16-!-mesutcang [~mesutcang@94.54.250.96] has joined #debian
10:17<NewBee>So bascily there really isn't a need right now to update git, atleast security wise?
10:18<jmcnaught>NewBee: the idea is that all the software keeps working the same way for you for a couple of years at a time.. no surprise changes to features/syntax/config etc to deal with. Security fixes for git will be backported by Debian to the 2.1.4 version that Debian distributes for Jessie
10:19<NewBee>Oh, that clears things up. Thank you!

19:31<lwp>sney: As Windows10 was rebooting repeatedly during its upgrade/install, at one point I let the reboot go to the wheezy install, and immediately started getting fsck errors on the root filesystem.
19:32<lwp>I let fsck fix a bunch of [ext4] errors, and restart, and later let Win-10 finish its installation. I got more fsck errors next time I started wheezy.

19:34<lwp>basicly didn't look very good. Luckily I made backups of everything before I started with win-10, so I let it finish its install, and then I booted a wheezy install CD
19:34<lwp>and repartitioned and restored the /root partition from backup.
19:35<lwp>the /boot partition is not touched, but I think I need to run some grub2-reconfigure or whatever it is, to update the boot process ? Is this something I can do from the supergrubdisk ?
19:36<lwp>or even from the scripts in the restored root partition maybe ?

21:24<capt_redbeard>Hello! I posted here a few days ago regarding an issue with the graphics in Debian running on VMware Fusion. The highest resolution is only 1360x768 whenever I install from an 8.5 disc. However, I found out that installing from an 8.4 disc (and even updating all packages), the problem is no longer present. Could it be there is a problem in the debian installer?
21:25<sney>even if there was a problem with the installer, it would go away once the system is updated. graphics drivers and packages etc are not tied to installer versions
21:25<sney>HOWEVER, your 8.4 disc could be the one that includes non-free firmware, which is often a culprit with graphics features
21:26<capt_redbeard>Hmm I did install xorg-video-vmware package from the repos, so I figured the firmware was installed.
21:28<sney>not if it's in non-free since that's never enabled by default, except when installing from the debian-installer modified specifically for that
21:28<sney>an easy way to check is to grep dmesg for mentions of missing firmware

23:08<JesseW>Who would be the right person to contact about getting things moving on updating flashplugin-nonfree? The maintainer is (understandably) somewhat inactive, but there is a security update outstanding for more than 2 weeks now.
23:10<JesseW>This update is sadly it bit more involved than previous ones, as Adobe altered their website, requiring an update to the get-upstream-version.pl script, along with the usual generation of signed hashes.

23:12<JesseW>The get-upstream-version.pl script is automatically updated from the same location as the hashes -- but only if it errors out. In this case, it doesn't error out, it merely returns the wrong information. So there probably will have to be an update to the package itself, with all the additional complications of that.
23:12<JesseW>Here's the relevant bug: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=831228
23:12<judd>Bug http://bugs.debian.org/831228 in flashplugin-nonfree (open, patch, security): «update-flashplugin-nonfree references wrong version»; severity: grave; opened: 2016-07-14; last modified: 2016-07-27.
23:14<JesseW>And the URL where the hashes (and script) are located is: http://people.debian.org/~bartm/flashplugin-nonfree/D5C0FC14
23:14<sney>JesseW: email bartm directly, or maybe ask in #debian-security for next steps
23:15<JesseW>sney: thanks. bartm already gets the bug email -- unless you think it's useful, I don't want to bother him further with a personalized email. I'll try #debian-security
23:16<sney>speaking as a sometime maintainer it's easy to forget stuff from lists sometimes. a polite reminder isn't a big deal either way. but yeah, asking -security is useful for this stuff
23:17<JesseW>ok, I'll send a short (and certainly polite) email.
