02:15<Claus_>Hello, I'm having a weird issue on my Debian 8 box at home. I'm running a software raid 5 using MDM but after about 2 weeks the iowait increases and performance slows to a crawl. I've tried all kinds of performance tuning and the sync performance is reasonable but still the performance dips after 2 weeks. Only solution I have found as of yet is to poweroff the box, a reboot does not do anything. Any ideas where to look for
02:15<Claus_>solutions?
02:15-!-lescactus [~quassel@office.interact.lu] has joined #debian
02:19<lindi-_>Claus_: what's MDM?

02:21<lindi-_>Claus_: might be a silly idea but does hibernate fix the issue? It should reset hardware state like shutdown but should keep most of the software state intact
02:23<Claus_>lindi-_: I don't know, it's currently running setup as a server box, but I'll try the next time the performance issue pops up. But it seems like I'm missing some sort of flush in the raid setup, that only a poweroff can clear

04:00<kingsley>stevenm_: Hi
04:00<skitt>stevenm_, it can; ideally since you're still seeing the issue you should do it with an explanatory email
04:00<skitt>stevenm_, see how Paul Gevers did it in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=619362#34
04:00<judd>Bug http://bugs.debian.org/619362 in dbconfig-common (closed, d-i): «preseeding of admin-user doesn't work»; severity: important; opened: 2011-03-23; last modified: 2015-07-15.

04:00<kingsley>You may be interested in the documentation of the "reopen" command at
04:00<skitt>stevenm_, you'd just need the "Control: reopen -1" line
04:00<kingsley>https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control
04:01<stevenm_>well it's just I am no longer steven@ocm-ltd.com any more
04:01<stevenm_>as I don't work there any longer

04:01<skitt>stevenm_, anyone can reopen a bug
04:02<skitt>stevenm_, although since you're the original submitter you might want to change the owner too, see the docs in kingsley's link above

04:02<skitt>stevenm_, IIRC "Control: owner !" should do the trick
04:02<stevenm_>is this just commands you send in a subject line in an email or something?
04:02<skitt>stevenm_, look at the email in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=619362#34
04:03<skitt>stevenm_, they're commands you list in a fake header section at the start of your email
04:03-!-awer [~pi@188.29.165.171.threembb.co.uk] has joined #debian
04:03<stevenm_>-a fake header section? can't it just go in the body of a plain-text email?
04:04<stevenm_>damn this is haaaasle
04:04<skitt>it's just the start of your plain-text email

04:05<skitt><blank line>
04:05<stevenm_>i'm just not sure I care any longer
04:05<skitt>Hi, I'm reopening blah
04:05<skitt>OK ;-)
04:05<stevenm_>well clearly no one bothered to actually test it the last two times they said it was fixed!

09:54<Dr_O>desafder: What do you mean by "clone". If you want a one time clone and can take the system down then boot from alternative media and use dd to make a copy of the entire disk at the block level. If you want to backup your system on a more regular basis then you will probably want to backup at the (mounted) filesystem level. Backing up at the filesystem level means you need to worry about ensuring you quiesce the data you are backing up. Traditionally
09:54<Dr_O>one would take the system to runlevel 1 but filesystem snapshots (btrfs is your friend) may help here. Pay attention to database files separately though. Once you have a snapshot you can copy to an external drive with a tool like rsync and use the --link-dest option to get a "timemachine" like incemental backup

10:08<lindi-_>Dr_O: why not?
10:08<Dr_O>gargaml: I don't think you can resize a root partition onlin... you would have to boot from debian live USB/cd and resize from there...
10:08<Dr_O>lindi-_: my server deadlocked last time I tried it!
10:09<desafder>my hard disk is failling . i need to replace with a new one. i used dd once in a similar case and could not restore as btrfs complained on subvolume UUID...
10:09<lindi-_>Dr_O: worked just fine for me last time
10:09<valdyn>desafder: you did something wrong, dd would work, but btrfs send is just more efficient
10:10<Dr_O>Ah... well was probably debian6 last I tried. If I were to try again I'd take the system to single user mode!
10:10<gargaml>I'm gonna play head or tail then :-)
10:11<valdyn>desafder: theoretically you can also do the migration live, but you need to be able to hotplug the new hd for that to work
10:11<desafder>it is snapper & subvolume that failed to work after restore the dd image . i did the dd using knoppix
10:11<Dr_O>gargaml: you could move /usr onto a new partition (lvm) to free up space on root partition
10:12<lindi-_>Dr_O: is that really a good idea?
10:12<Dr_O>but as lindi says resizing root now works then you could give that a go... as I say I'd go to single user mode and give the resize a go.

10:17<lindi-_>Dr_O: doesn't the CD case use aufs or ovelayfs?
10:19<Dr_O>debian live might... but not the ONLY way of implementing it. Traditionally read only /root should not be a problem as long as /var is read write

11:20<Dr_O>gargaml: what version of debian are you runnning?
11:22<leba2>I installed ntp on Debian 8.5, but need it to start *after* the samba-ad-dc service at boot time. I tried to edit /run/systemd/generator.late/ntp.service and add samba-ad-dc.service in the "After=" line, but either rebooting or systemctl daemon-reload just sets the unit file to its original state, destroying changes.
11:22<leba2>And Debian 8.5 doesn't have the systemctl edit command available.

11:27<stevenm_>hey I think I've identified that one service is starting after another... it should not - it should start before or it won't work
11:27<Dr_O>gargaml: thanks... gives me some idea of the kernel version that the online resizing works on (for root partition) mat get me out of jail one day that kinda knowledge
11:27<vulcano>leba2: /run exist only in RAM, so always will be destroy during restart
11:27<stevenm_>multipath-tools is starting *after* open-iscsi .. which is a pain as it can't dynamically pick up on things that way - you need to manually restart the service every time you load up the server
11:28<stevenm_>anyway I can do a workaround to get one service to start *sooner* ?
11:28<jmcnaught>leba2: you know i started to answer this question on freenode but before i hit <enter> you were gone, and now you're here, so that's kinda annoying. anyways /run is a tmpfs that exists only in ram. You want to edit/create files in /etc/systemd/system
11:29<jmcnaught>leba2: you could make a /etc/systemd/system/ntp.service.d/ directory to put a snippet file with the After= directive that you want to override
11:29<leba2>jmcnaught: I'm sorry, sir, really. I did not mean to annoy you. I actualyl got disconnected from freenode, and since I'm a bit pressured I hastily decided to try the "official" channel (which I was told to do anyway like a week ago)}
11:29<gargaml>Dr_O: Linux debian 4.6.0-1-amd64
11:30<gargaml>but in the end I don't know if we can speak about online resizing because lvresize seems to unmount partitions
11:30<gargaml>or maybe it remounts it once the logical volume is resized and then performs the resizing operation
11:31<gargaml>(I don't know the details yet)
11:31<jmcnaught>leba2: it's okay, just generally it's best to stick in on place while you troubleshoot things instead of moving around

16:20<stevenm_>hey I think I've identified that one service is starting after another - but it shouldnt be (multipath-tools is starting *after* open-iscsi) .. which is a pain as it can't dynamically pick up on changes that way - you need to manually restart the service every time you load up the server
16:21<stevenm_>until this is fixed in the next debian (I think I've seen a bug for it somewhere) what is the best/easiest workaround for this? how can I get one service to definately start earlier?
16:21<stevenm_>i don't really want to make iscsi depend on multipath if I can help it (because in reality it shouldn't - as you might not even need multipath)
16:21<stevenm_>multipath just should generally start *earlier*

19:58<awal1>kououken, there is a nice tutorial in debian wiki about installing steam
19:59<kououken>Thanks, I've found it. Feeling stupid.
19:59<awal1>just by curiousity, I installed steam in my sid VM following the wiki and it's completely broken
20:00<awal1>installation worked fine, but the pkg is broken, it won't launch

20:01<sney>awal1: that's more a question for freenode #steamlug if it installed correctly, though at a guess it might be because you're using a VM and steam is intended for gaming
20:02<awal1>sney, you mean steam needs real hardware?
20:02<sney>so you would be missing some hardware/rendering interfaces etc
