03:18<twb>There do seem to be a lot of people shooting their feet off trying to install/remove nv drivers
03:18<twb>Although I suspect a lot of that is them following "some web page I found in google" instead of Debian best practice
03:18<hewl>I'm just trying to get v-sync to work without decreasing my FPS to an unstable 23FPS. I wanted to see if simply using the open-source drivers would net better results.
03:18<grawity>where does one find said Debian best practice?
03:19<twb>!nvidia
03:19<dpkg>Where possible, Nvidia graphic processing units are supported using the open source <nouveau> driver on Debian systems by default. To install the proprietary "nvidia" driver, see https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers or ask me about <nvidia dkms>, <nvidia legacy>; installing this directly from nvidia.com (i.e. with <nvidia-installer>) is _not_ supported in #debian, please go to #nvidia on irc.freenode.net.
03:19<jm_>hewl: /usr/share/doc/libgl1-nvidia-glx/README.alternatives
03:19<twb>grawity: ^ that stuff is what I meant
03:19<twb>grawity: I suppose "directly from nvidia.com" counts as "something I found in google" :-)
03:20<jm_>also, if they don't know about backports, they get older version, so maybe that is the motivation too
03:20<twb>yup
03:20<hewl>There is no package named nouveau in the repositories. The closest match is "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau", which is apparently already installed.
03:21<jm_>yeah that's the one
03:21<twb>hewl: yep, that's the FOSS driver
03:21<hewl>So that means I've had both installed already both this time? I do not recall installing the nouveau drivers, however I did install the nvidia-drivers.
03:21<arturo>do you know any tool to help in sorting photos?

03:24<twb>hewl: xserver-xorg-video-all
03:25<arturo>hewl: it seems I have 'ristretto' and 'imagemagick'
03:25<hewl>twb: That meta-package is installed. It only includes FOSS drivers, though, right?
03:25<twb>arturo: by "sorting" do you mean some kind of organization, so that you can say "show me all the photos with Nancy from the 2008 trip to Kolkata"?

22:06<hewl>R4F_Debian: It's got nothing to do with administration. It's vertical sync, how every frame is only sent to the monitor on every cycle so as to prevent screen tearing.
22:06<hewl>R4F_Debian: On a default install of Debian stable with the KDE simply dragging a window will cause massive screen tearing.
22:07<R4F_Debian>does it tend to occur in mate also ? I don't use KDE anymore, just gnome and mate
22:08<hewl>R4F_Debian: From general searching in the forums it primarily affects users of KDE. Gnome seems to have updated their tools enough in stable that v-sync is no longer a huge issue, and can be configured by simply ticking a checkbox in the settings app.
22:09<R4F_Debian>are you having any issue related to KDE in your Debian ? Just for curiosity
22:11<R4F_Debian>My Debian with mate have been running fine here, without any issue (except for when I provoke one :)
22:12<R4F_Debian>I had some issues to 'btrfs', but decided to come back to ext4, for I ran Debian with ext4 in the past - 4 years ago - and never had any issue with this file system
22:12<hewl>R4F_Debian: It seems to be a mixture of both. Xorg/X11 is absolutely terrible in regards to screen settings, the only way something like v-sync is even an achieveable idea is through extensions and patches on the base code. KDE's window manager Kwin seems to struggle to automatically detect the video settings Xorg/X11 is using and sometimes employs incorrect video output settings itself. If you consider Xorg/X11 to be a part of Debian (
22:12<hewl>which it is packaged with in every DE you can use for it), then yes, the problem is with Debian.
