02:48<niffum>i was on sid, but i had held off using systemd because it destoryed the box last time i installed it.. so this time i did an apt-get instally systemd

02:49<jmcnaught>niffum: i thought you were upgrading from wheezy to jessie at first. the testing & unstable support is in #debian-next
02:49<niffum>i was kind forced into it because when i did an apt-get install for xorg, it updated xserver-xorg-video-nvidia which wouldnt run with the old driver and I couldn't recompile the kernel because it was 3.16
02:49<niffum>ook, cheers
02:49<jmcnaught>wait, kernel 3.16
02:50<jmcnaught>are you sure you're not using jessie?
02:50<niffum>yeah, it doens't compile anymore, so i'm on 4.7...um something now
02:51<niffum>i have sid in my sources.list

13:59<sney>Walter_White45: flash drive?
13:59<Walter_White45>sney: SSD/HDD
13:59<sney>yes
13:59<sney>that's a pretty common configuration
13:59<mischievio>Walter_White45: It's possible to treat an external as an internal, but you're going to have speed problems
14:00<sney>heh that's why I asked for clarification on the flash drive thing
14:01<mischievio>yeah, you can treat any type of storage as another type of storage... you'll just have to set it up in your bootloader
14:01<mischievio>and fstab
14:01<sney>yeah, but that wasn't his question ^^
14:01<Walter_White45>mischievio: But this will cause speed problems, right?
14:01<allamoox> 378 sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia primus
14:02<Walter_White45>sney: With flash drive I meant disk/hard drive
14:02<mischievio>Walter_White45: yeah, most SDD/HDD's these days run on SATA, which is pretty quick
14:02<mischievio>if you're connecting an external, via USB, you will be limited by the speeds of USB
14:02<sney>Walter_White45: it's best to install windows first if you can because it has some annoying partition logic and will also delete any bootloaders that exist on the disk
14:03<sney>but it can be done either way and it's pretty straightforward.
14:03<nicolas17>how can I make a Debian system update package lists regularly, and email if package upgrades are available? I was looking at unattended-upgrade but it seems to be all about *installing* the upgrades automatically
14:03<mischievio>the best way would be to partition your drive with LVM, so that you can manage the partitions on the fly
14:04<sney>I didn't think LVM could handle ntfs sanely
14:04<mischievio>nicolas17: you can schedule events via crontab
14:04<Walter_White45>mischievio: I meant like installing Windows on another partition on the disk/hard drive. And switch between Debian and Windows at the startup.
14:04<nicolas17>mischievio: LVM worked great for me \o/
14:04<mischievio>but Debian shouldn't be doing anything "automatically"
14:05<sney>!cron-apt
14:05<dpkg>cron-apt is a highly configurable tool to help keep your box up to date. By default, it downloads new updates and emails the list of available packages. It can also automatically install packages if you trust security.debian.org to never have broken packages, or if you have your farm of machines working off a local mirror, seeded with updated packages after your own testing. See also <cron-apt tips> <auto update> <apticron>.
14:05<mischievio>Walter_White45: linke sney said, you can do that, but it's needlessly difficult because Windows like to mess with bootloaders for no good reason
14:05<nicolas17>mischievio: I made a LVM volume on my external drive, rsynced my whole filesystem to it, then formatted my internal drive to be a LVM PV too and join the same VG
14:05<sney>that's not what I said
14:06<sney>Walter_White45: don't worry about mischievio, he seems pretty confused, yes you can have a dual boot system from one hard drive. people have done it for decades.
14:06<sney>if you install windows first it is fewer steps but it's fine either way.
14:06<nicolas17>mischievio: I booted into that and I was effectively running out of my external drive, then I moved all data back to my internal drive while I used the computer normally :D

14:12<mischievio>^^ *EXACTLY*!!!

14:18<RequiemAeternam>Oh.
14:18<mischievio>Walter_White45: you're right... you never said "USB", i did...
14:19<mischievio>i just read "flash drive" and your question about speed as referencing an external

14:20<mischievio>either way, it'll be easier to do this with windows installed, first

14:21<RequiemAeternam>Good!
14:22<mischievio>somiaj: a lot of external drives are usb, and many are SSD
14:22<mischievio>sure, most are HDD, but WW didn't differentiate between the two

19:01<somiaj>I think lightdm might have a configuration on if you want it to have numlock on/off.
19:01<somiaj>have you checked that.
19:01<doflamingo>i don't know why both on xfce or fluxbox doing the same

19:04<somiaj>I see a package called numlockx and instructions here http://askubuntu.com/questions/155679/how-to-enable-numlock-at-boot-time-for-login-screen that may work to forcing lightdm to have the numlock on when it loads

21:00<hewl>doflamingo: That breaks EULA. Last I checked, you are only permitted to have one active copy of Windows per license at a time. You can create a backup copy on disconnected storage for the purposes of backing up data, but no more, and you cannot use it unless you deactivate (uninstall) your current working version of Windows.
21:01<Cannibal>They work as normal (,< and .>)
21:01<hewl>doflamingo: However, you can contact Microsoft's telephone line to move your registration over to another machine if you explain your situation and why you needed a new hardware ID.

23:14<nicoo>Arcade: That entirely depends on the PEAP subtype. For instance, PEAP/EAP-GTC doesn't even involve passwords
23:14<Arcade>Peap 2
23:15<Arcade>I see the option to enter it each time
23:15-!-Dysgalt [~clarjon1@108.61.123.67] has quit []
23:15<nicoo>That's not the subtype, and since I'm not a network manager user, I don't even know where it is stored
23:15<nicoo>but in any case, I would indeed assume the password is stored in plaintext
23:15<Arcade>I take it WPA2 though will always store plaintext

23:16<nicoo>Yes
23:16<nicoo>If you mean WPA2-PSK
23:16<Arcade>Yep: curious why the password is not salted or something
23:19<nicoo>Mostly because in most cases it's impossible
23:19<nicoo>You are proving, to the authentication server, knowledge of the password
23:19<nicoo>not the knowledge of some hash of the password

23:22<Arcade>I think I will keep WPA2 the way it is and have my other network enter in the password each time
23:24<jcrain>from what I can tell, NetworkManager stores things in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections, and it's plaintext, but only readable by root

23:33<jcrain>would be a good argument to encrypt the drive Arcade
23:34<jcrain>it can apparently be set to store the password in a keyring instead...
23:35<Arcade>any suggestions on what to use for disk encrpt jcrain , there a link for setting up a keyring?
23:39<jcrain>for encryption, i've just used the encryption in the debian installer

23:43<Ouroboros>is it really that important that they dont steal your wifi password?
23:43<Ouroboros>just curious
23:44<jcrain>running nm-connection-editor from a terminal has an option to 'store the password only for this user' next to the password field
23:50<Arcade>yeah I see that when creating a new connection. Does not give the option when updating the password
