01:26<somiaj>hewl: why do you ask? you can check the new for the DSA annoucments. There have been a few the last 12 days. To see if any affect you just add security.debian.org sources
01:27<Ouroboros>how do i fix this thing where my display is a few pixels too far to the left
01:27<hewl>Apper (KDE's package upgrading management software) tells me there hasn't been any updates for the past twelve days and fails to fetch the software list.
01:27<somiaj>Ouroboros: what kind of monintor?
01:27<Ouroboros>a normal lcd
01:27<hewl>Ouroboros: That could be something that can be remedied by your LCD's settings.
01:28<hewl>Ouroboros: Is there anything like "auto-alignment" there?
01:28<Ouroboros>yeah, but why should that be necessary
01:29<somiaj>hewl: it could be none of the packages you use have had updates, but hard to say. You can try it from the command line, apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
01:29<somiaj>hewl: I don't know kde's software well enough to know what it could be doing.
01:29-!-raju [~raju@101.56.4.86] has quit []
01:30<jmcnaught>hewl: does "apt-get update" have errors if you run it as root?
01:30<hewl>somiaj: That's the thing that concerns me. Apper is usually very vocal about security patches it does to any package on the system. Doing an "sudo apt-get update" nets an error message about the public key of a custom repository I added later, but that shouldn't be having an effect on the rest of the repositories. As of right now, apt-get upgrade does nothing.
01:31<Ouroboros>maybe try fixing/comment out the broken one

01:33-!-superusr is "realname" on #debian
01:35<hewl>Ouroboros: It shouldn't matter, though. I did an update last night and that should have updated Apper, but Apper itself is saying there hasn't been updates for twelve days and refuses to update any more. Maybe I should just wait it out a bit and see if Debian security updates still install in Apper.

01:37<hewl>Of course the current repo I added later is not having its software updated, which is really bad because of the software's nature.
01:38<Ouroboros>i dont remember if public key error stops processing of the apt lists
01:38<Ouroboros>worth a quick check

01:40-!-madbytes is "madbytes" on #debian
01:40<hewl>I don't think it should but as of right now I have no proof that it's functioning as intended. Maybe Apper only updates its "last checked" date for every upgrade -it- performs?
01:40<Ouroboros>re my lcd issue, i just remembered i am running this via analog dvi, so that makes sense that there could be a sync issue

01:43<Ouroboros>yeah
01:43<Ouroboros>i was just confused because i thought it was over digital
01:44<hewl>fair enough, misalignment over a digital connection would be a problem with the software not the hardware

03:08<somiaj>x2xx3x: wonder if the way you are booting the iso is messing tools. And this is an actual jessie installer (not a live iamge)?
03:08<hewl>Ouroboros: Thank you for this, though. It'll be an informative read.
03:08<Ouroboros>but it comes down to making an rc.d script anyway, so you can just do that with apt
03:08<Ouroboros>oh wait, not quite

03:08<hewl>"apt-get install unattended-upgrades" come on it was going good so far
03:08<x2xx3x>yes it is an installer. i installed from the same image onto my main desktop machine
03:09<Ouroboros>hewl: yeah, its using apt.conf.d, so maybe a little cleaner than cron script or whatever
03:11<hewl>Ouroboros: KDE has its own native way of running scripts on start up, the problem herein lies that my network takes up to 10 minutes to connect from boot. I'd have to have it either keep running until it detects network prescence and give up after a while or just have it attempt the task ~10 minutes in.
03:12<somiaj>x2xx3x: if grub is the only thing that failed, you can try to manually fix it.
03:12<hewl>A bit off topic but nevertheless thank you for providing information, it's always appreciated.
03:12<Ouroboros>hewl: i mean, it seems like whatever mechanism its using is exactly what you want
03:12<Ouroboros>just have to figure out how that works

03:19<x2xx3x>well - the super grub disc would also do its job i guess. but as i wanted a multiboot system with more than one linux distro i will try it that way

04:28<hewl>somiaj: Ah, well it's specifically KDE's Dolphin file manager that I was wanting thumbnails in. So I wanted to make sure that it's either a fix within Dolphin or a fix within Debian as a whole. Things get frighteningly confusing fast. Like why are there two packages that begin with "ffmpegthumb" in the repositories?
04:29<somiaj>hewl: might have to look at the dependeicies to see what dolphin uses.

09:33<petn-randall>d3ruw1d: It's fine to highlight people in the channel (by prepending their nick in front of the message). Just don't query people because sometimes several people chime in to help on a topic, and that doesn't work if you take it to PM.
09:33<parrot-jason>is there any irc that can teach hacking?
09:33<xormor>parrot-jason, just hacking or cracking?
09:33<xormor>parrot-jason, do you want to break into systems?
09:34<xormor>parrot-jason, "hacking" is a term used about computer enthusiasts that hack the keyboard for fun and profit and "cracking" is breaking into systems.

09:34<petn-randall>parrot-jason: Use your internet search engine of choice, Parrot OS, Kali or "hacking" are considered off-topic in here.
09:34<xormor>parrot-jason, it is only legal to hack your own systems or those requested by the owners.
09:34<bremner>xormor: thanks for trying to help people, but it's still off-topic here.
09:35<xormor>bremner, ok.
09:35<petn-randall>xormor: You can always take snapshots of your VM and roll back to an earlier stage. But I'd suggest you just fix the accidents you sometimes have and learn from it. I haven't re-installed a fresh Debian out of need for 5+ years now.
09:36<d3ruw1d>itd_: i used dd on terminal to put the iso inside the usb stick but when i tried to boot it didn't recognize. than i read some forums that there is a file that makes the bios and uefi recognize the files inside it
09:36<xormor>petn-randall, ok. I will become a self-learned professional in Debian administration. I use this mostly as a desktop, but I do sometimes run Apache 2 to display images to myself and text describing the images or some nonsense text for fun.
09:37<petn-randall>xormor: Also somehow backing up /etc/ or even using a VCS of some kind to track any changes there are a good way of keeping a known "good" state of configuration.
09:37<xormor>petn-randall, is "VM" for "Virtual Machine"?
09:37<petn-randall>xormor: yes

09:38<xormor>petn-randall, for me "virtual enough" are the kernel and assembly interrupts. I do want to keep some sort of hang of the "machine level" of operating my machines without adding too many layers on top of those, even though they might make administration/maintenance easier.

14:49<awal1>confused now :P
14:49<jupiter>like some other distros
14:49<mots>Just install sysv-init, jupiter
14:49<somiaj>jupiter: debian jessie can be ran with sysvinit instead of systemd as the init system.
14:49<jupiter>something without the pootertard crap.
14:49<somiaj>!remove systemd
14:49<dpkg>To use an init system other than systemd in jessie, install the systemd-shim package (for logind) and remove the systemd-sysv package: aptitude install systemd-shim sysvinit-core systemd-sysv-. To stick with sysvinit for wheezy->jessie upgrades, follow the pinning advice in the release notes: http://deb.li/30Kby - See also <upstart> and <openrc>
14:50<jupiter>somiaj: hawt!!
14:50<jupiter>jessie is the latest or something?
14:50<somiaj>jupiter: it won't completely remove systemd, but it will use sysvinit, you will have some small things form systemd still installed that are sometimes used by other things (like gnome) so I woudln't say it is completely removed, but you can really minimize its use.
14:50<somiaj>jupiter: jessie is the current stable release.
14:51<jupiter> I don't use gnome at all

14:51<somiaj>awal1: its debian not apt. The bigger issue is the post/pre install scripts. These are designed to upgrade but not downgrade, so when the scripts are doing things to help the upgrade, they won't do it the other way.
14:52<awal1>but for sure one ends with a frankendebian system
14:52<jupiter>I stay the fuck away from whatever the dark specter of pootertards/redhat's tentacles reach.
14:52<somiaj>so though you could have apt just install lesser version software, the isntall scripts are not made to smoothly switch to older versions like they are to newer versions.
14:52<agaida>jupiter: you should think about using devuan
14:52<jupiter>gnome=redhat=systemd
14:52<awal1>somiaj, got you
14:53<somiaj>jupiter: choice is yours, though ranting is off topic here. I've shown you debians solution to running sysvinit instead of systemd as the init system. If you want to completely remove systemd you'll have to look at other distros.
14:53<jupiter>I didn't know devuan still exists
14:54<r3muxd>Wrong question, my bad. I planned on just reinstalling the packages to get them to the correct version, but apt insists on trying to reinstall them on the same version. Is there any way to just make it reinstall the package with a different vesion?

19:46<somiaj>Ouroboros: make-kpkg may not follow changes in the kernel as fast as the internal make target.
19:46<somiaj>so there is a chance it may have errors with newer kernels than the one in jessie for instance.

22:29<r4f_debian>Hi all, please, I'm removing an application, in some cases, 'apt-get autoremove' cleans Debian of installed packages related to application is desired to be removed. Is there other tool that can help to clean OS completely from any application ?
22:31<Guest1633>Aren't you looking for "apt-get remove $packname" ?
22:33<r4f_debian>I want to remove all traces of an application I'm uninstalling. Even having used 'apt-get autoremove' (which was suggested at the command prompt, in relation to a particular application), even I could see then that there was debris of the application that were not removed
22:33<r4f_debian>I used it, Guest1633, and 'apt-get autoremove', but still remains some log files that weren't removed
22:34<bremner>r4f_debian: try apt-get purge package
22:34<Guest1633>Also noticed that, esp. log or config files tend to stay behind. :(
22:34<ryouma>r4f_debian: i don't think apt cares about log files. also autoremove might not be enough to remove ancillarily-installed packages. although i am less sure of that. i do this: aptitude -o "Apt::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant=false" purge `aptitude search ~c|...`` `deborphan`.
22:34<bremner>yes, that is what purge is for
22:35<r4f_debian>Hi bremner, that is exactly what I needed ! Thanks ! I used this command in the past, but forgot it. Bad habit not write personal documentation for this purpose.... :)
22:35<ryouma>there is an asymmetry by default. some recommended packages will be installed but not uninstalled upon purge, or similar. my command fixes that.
22:35<ryouma>purge will fix config files
