00:32<hewl>In concerns to interaction with sound hardware in Debian stable, would I look up the manuals for Pulseaudio or ALSA?
00:35<jmcnaught>if you want general knowledge reading both would be good
00:36<hewl>I've given Pulseaudio a quick skim but it doesn't seem to be responsible for hardware interaction, and I'm struggling to find ALAS's manual.
00:36<jmcnaught>in KDE i think there's an additional abstraction layer above pulseaudio called phonon
00:36<jmcnaught>what are you trying to do?
00:36<Ouroboros>are you supposed to run 'make deb-pkg' under fakeroot or something? i got a bunch of errors about "changing ownership... Operation not permitted" at the end
00:37<hewl>jmcnaught: I just want to make it so my speakers aren't muted when I plug in my lineout/headphones.

00:45<hewl>jmcnaught: That will make using terminal a lot easier.
00:46<Ouroboros>i think this is just a problem with the firmware make, just need to find where that script is
00:48<hewl>If I remove a package that's a dependency of a metapackage using aptitude, it will attempt to remove everything installed by that meta package afterward because they'll all be marked as "automatically installed". Does the same apply to apt-get?
00:48-!-bastiand1 [~bastian@port-54110.pppoe.wtnet.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:49<grawity>not quite as automatic, but generally yes
00:49<grawity>I'd `apt-mark manual` the stuff I want to keep
00:49<jmcnaught>with apt-get it's two steps, dependencies get marked for autoremoval which is a separate command
00:50<hewl>ah, that confirms my suspicion, that it's marked irrelevant and aptitude simply does an autoclean/remove in tandem

01:54<dpkg>Request For Package (RFP) is the way to ask for a piece of software to be included in Debian. See http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp, the section on that page "Adding new entries with "reportbug"" is a good place to start. Technically, a RFP is a wishlist bug filed against "wnpp" with a title beginning "RFP: ", ask me about <wnpp>. The best way of getting software packaged is to do it yourself: ask me about <nmg>.

10:46<HorizonAstronaut>blast007: a friend helped me to set backports so I don't have that problem, thanks!
10:47<blast007>k, so then do what that dpkg bot said to get the backported kernel
10:47<HorizonAstronaut>I'll try to install the backported kernel hoping that it won't block the operating system as the previous time
10:48<blast007>well, you can pick the old kernel from the grub menu if the new one fails, so it's not a huge issue

16:00<blast007>deltron3030su: are you trying to automatically install the firmware? firmware-b43-installer requires a working network connection because it has to download software from Broadcom and cut the firmware out of that file.

22:37<numbi>vortek: ionice ?
22:37<hewl>vortek: I'm with ryouma on that, caching to disk usually speeds things up unless you have it improperly configured/an absurdly slow disk.
22:37<jmcnaught>hewl: tasksel --task-packages kde-desktop
22:38<hewl>jmcnaught: Would that also need to be done in tandem with --test to make it so it doesn't actually install or remove any packages?

22:39<numbi>vortek: man ionice. that might be it for you. if you are using compatible scheduler
22:39<jmcnaught>hewl: kde-standard is the name of a meta package. The meta package that the kde-desktop *task* installs is called task-kde-desktop (which depends on kde-standard)

22:40<hewl>jmcnaught: ah, I'm looking at it now and see that kde-standard is a dependency of task-kde-desktop. It's all good, thank you.
22:40<vortek>I was saying how slow debian was at using apt and someone told me to install this "tool" to make my hardrive perform like an sdd

22:41<vortek>no it wasnt that
22:41<numbi>so it was tmpfs volume :))
22:41<hewl>vortek: I'd be very cautious about that. Debian works the way it does because it works, the most efficient and safe method for data storage is already in use.
22:42<hewl>vortek: How's the health of the hardware on your system? That might be the cause of a slow system.

23:30<numbi>eatmydata... must apply that on my databases, hehe
23:30<newtoBL>nvm - too lazy to restart and check the boot menu (loooong boot time on this old laptop)

23:30<Ouroboros>the system seems to have loaded, but only with very basic drivers
23:31<vortek>well it make the kernel compile time , increase by 50% heh but like it says dont use it on data apps that r important
23:31<numbi>Ouroboros: initramfs ?
23:31<Ouroboros>no, the full system loaded
23:31<Ouroboros>but just... most of the usual hardware modules did not insert
23:31<Ouroboros>it might be because there is a mismatch between kernel and modules
23:31<numbi>Ouroboros: might be
23:32<Ouroboros>ah yes
23:32<Ouroboros>it didnt find modules.dep
23:32<Ouroboros>this is all because i am trying to do this on live :)
23:33<Ouroboros>so my kernel and initrams are the ones i built, but the /lib/modules is from the original live
23:33<Ouroboros>ok, i think i can work with this
