01:10<jmcnaught>Ouroboros: you use 'bridge' when you want your VM to use a bridge configured in /e/n/interfaces, networkd, network-manager. you use 'network' for when you want the VM to use a virtual network defined by libvirt (virsh net-*)
01:10-!-root__ [~ghost@2601:403:100:2450:e4ea:a2a6:183:6db] has quit []
01:12<hewl>techsearch: The account should be in the wheel group of users, which have sudo privleges. Can you check the account's groups?
01:12<jmcnaught>techsearch: if you use expert mode the debian installer lets you not enter a password for root. in that case it will give the user created by the installer sudo access through membership in the sudo group
01:13<jmcnaught>hewl: debian uses the sudo group for sudo, not wheel
01:13<Ouroboros>jmcnaught: right, but since <network> can also reference a bridge, you can achieve basically all the same stuff with either
01:13<hewl>jmcnaught: wait lemme check something then

01:14<jmcnaught>techsearch: if you want to give full sudo access to a user, "adduser username sudo". no need to edit sudoers in this case
01:15<techsearch>will i need to run that from root?
01:15<hewl>ah ok, it's members of wheel that are able to restrict use of su for other groups: https://wiki.debian.org/SystemGroups
01:15<jmcnaught>techsearch: yes

01:42<Ouroboros>no, sudo group vs sudoers
01:44<somiaj>Ouroboros: the sudoers file just comes preconfigured to allow members of the sudo group full access. This just makes this easier to give for someone new and a template one can edit if they wish.
01:44<somiaj>also makes adding a system user with full privlages easier from a script.
01:46<themill>not touching config files also makes the next upgrade easier

02:07<themill>no, it will ask you if you want to do that

02:18<hewl>I honestly wouldn't mind doing that, as long as that might take.
02:18<techsearch>I have not. I'm relatively new and most of my upgrades have coincided with the decision or need to do a fresh install. it'd be nice to not reinvent the wheel when I come around to upgrades
02:19<Parckwart>I usually just keep the old config files
02:19-!-test [~test@AToulouse-654-1-436-241.w83-205.abo.wanadoo.fr] has quit []
02:21<techsearch>I've noticed a few times when the old configs don't apply to the new version, even if its only a syntax change without any underlying functional change. That's enough to create a problem though. Is that just a grunt work issue or is there a way to finesse it?
02:22<themill>Don't modify config files; in most cases you can do something else that saves you future work.
02:22<techsearch>(generally speaking. I realize config files vary widely)
02:24<Ouroboros>just have all your settings in a giant script that you run on startup :)
02:24<hewl>I'd presume, for most packages at least, if the config file has incompatible syntax but you keep it anyway, then the package just uses defaults instead.
02:26<techsearch>I would think the same. I wouldn't expect it to break anything; just to leave something unmodified that I considered important to modify.
02:27<techsearch>ouroboros: Okay. Being new, that's not something I know how to do yet*, but will learn
02:28<Ouroboros>eh, dont

02:29<hewl>you're at least writing down what you've done in a text file or something right?
02:30<Ouroboros>anything that really needs to be configured should not just be in system files, you should have a properly documented local copy of some sort
02:30<techsearch>yes, I document the modifications I make. Replicating them is slow, but at least guided
02:31<Ouroboros>as for compatibility between versions, that really is almost never an issue; usually it is more that software changes and your configs become obsolete alltogether
02:31<hewl>wadda champ

10:53<Paerox>Hello. I'm learning about users, groups and file permissions. I have 3 users, "debian-deluged", "sirikorn" and "joachim, all three of which are members of the "movies" group. Users "joachim" and "sirikorn" can read and write to the folder /mnt/Movies. This folder is owned by user "joachim" and belongs to the "movies" group. User "debian-deluged" can neither read or write to this folder and I can't seem to figure out why?
10:55<Nemoder>chmod g+rw /mnt/Movies? although if it's a mount point you may need to set permissions in /etc/fstab
10:57<Paerox>Nemoder: /mnt/Movies is a mount point for a USB-HDD permanently attached to the machine, yes. Will try chmod g+rw /mnt/Movies

11:00<grawity>"/bin/bash/"? with the trailing slash?
11:00<Nemoder>oh right, to see contents you need executable permission too: chmod g+rwx /mnt/Movies
11:01<Paerox>grawity: no, I miss-typed that trailing slash
11:03<Paerox>Neomoder: I still get "Permission denied" as user "debian-deluged" after doing chmod g+rwx on /mnt/Movies

20:31<petn-randall>dodo: How so?
20:32<bremner>dunno, what flavour of arm is RPi 3?
20:35<dodo>bremner, I think that it supports armhf and armel
20:36<bremner>https://perens.com/blog/2016/04/07/installing-the-native-debian-armhf-architecture-on-raspberry-pi-3-instead-of-raspbian/

20:39<dodo>tes
20:39<dodo>yes*
20:39<dodo>He is chrooting to debian
20:41<bremner>well, that's a normal part of installing via debootstrap
20:44<dodo>doing it via debootstrap means that 2 operative systems are running? sharing resources (ram, cpu...), or I'm wrong?

20:54<illwieckz>as bremner said, chroot just allow you to use an arbitrary dir as / ; if this directory contains an usable tree, yes you can run software from this tree (you can run /usr/bin/apache2 from your normal host, and /usr/bin/mysql from your chroot even if it's /my/path/to/chroot/bin/mysql) and in these case, all the process share she same operating system, same kernel, same scheduler, and of course same computer: same ram and
20:54<illwieckz>same cpu
20:55<bremner>yes, it's possibly confusing because running debian in a chroot is common thing for android users
20:55<illwieckz>yes, sometime many confuses the environment with the os itself
