03:10<grawity>that depends on what your 'custom' session runs
03:10<grawity>because the gnome-session logout dialog only works when you're actually using gnome-session

03:19<zaytsev>grawity: so yes, itseems that i'm not using gnome-session, but it used to work on ubuntu 14.04, so old pre-systemd gnome i suppose. is there a common wisdom how to make it work? the nagbar dialog sucks
03:19<grawity>I dunno
03:19<grawity>when it comes to desktop session setup in Debian/Ubuntu, all I know is "ask pitti" >_>
03:20<grawity>but the logout dialog is usually *part of* the session manager
03:20<grawity>or, well, not quite "part of" but still relies on the session manager to do the actual logout

03:23<zaytsev>ok, will google to see how to get a nice dialog if possible at all. another question, is sudo apt-get -t jessie-backports dist-upgrade a smart thing to do? or even enable backports by default? that's what you'd do in ubuntu

You can install a few selected packages from backports, but the more you install the further you leave a system setup behind that is being tested and tested against. 08:38<babilen>dpkg: empty xorg.conf
08:38<dpkg>Starting from Debian 5.0 "Lenny", /etc/X11/xorg.conf is often basically empty or non-existent, as X auto-detects your hardware and starts the X server accordingly, nothing to worry about. Ask me about <xorg config> and <xrandr> for ways to configure Xorg. See also <xorg manual config>, <xorg.conf.d>, <xorg hal>.
08:38<babilen>dpkg: xorg.conf.d
08:38<dpkg>xorg can use files ending in the suffix .conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d for additional configuration. It is preferred to use an <empty xorg.conf> and create files (e.g. 20-nvidia.conf, 20-radeon.conf, 20-wacom.conf) there in order to configure a single device. You might have to create the directory yourself (mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d). See also "man 5 xorg.conf".

10:42<blu_>hi guys. I have a customer that runs some local ntp servers he wants me to put into /etc/ntpd.conf. I see those peer's states going from * to + to ' ' all the time, which makes the monitoring go haywire: http://paste.debian.net/hidden/9ed61e93/ (the status of the peer changes all the time / within seconds). What might be the cause of that?

11:03<petn-randall>blu_: The values you should care about are 'reach', which is a bitmask of how many times the server responded in the past, and offset/jitter, the latter being more important for a good sync. That should be quite low.
11:04<blu_>petn-randall, what the plugin our system uses dislikes is there sometimes being a whitespace on all peers for some seconds. if it queries ntpq at that time, its showing a bad state

16:27<somiaj>q__: the only way to be 100% secure is not be on the internet and have your computer located where no one but you can physically touch it. Beyond that there are more a best pratices, and debian has a lot of different hardening guides.
16:27<mtn>sancho_: have you looked at the wiki for ati video drivers? I would start there
16:27<somiaj>q__: as for a firewall, you really don't need these if you aren't running any software listening on any ports. Unlike say windows, you shouldn't really have software running on open ports unless you want it to and in this case you usually want someone to be able to access it.

16:34<Echoz>either way if your network is closed and behind a firewall you probably don't need one on your computer
16:36<somiaj>yea, to me best pratices is don't have services listening you don't need/want. firewalls to me are more to control which networks can reach wich services (if this is a concern in ones network topology) vs a method to block outsiders because you have a bunch of stuff listening for no reason.
16:37<Echoz>somiaj: oh, yes absolutely
16:38<CutMeOwnThroat>actually I feel that the type of personal firewall that restricts what programs can do outgoing connections would make about as much sense under linux for a desktop

16:40<somiaj>CutMeOwnThroat: I can see that being helpful, but provided on has a secure browser and is careful about what software one downloads/runs on their system it isn't really needed. But best pratices are relative to use case.

16:43<Echoz>in the sense you're speaking of i'd say privacy and security may almost be the same thing, since those outgoing connections may just as well be used to compromise your security

21:56<twb>sleser: the ones that say [FAIL] and [ OK ] at boot time?
21:56<sleser>like the one when the computer starts
21:56<somiaj>sleser: with systemd you have to enable persistant journald logs for boot info. Standard kernel info can be found in /var/log/messages
21:56<somiaj>sleser: you can also just use journalctl to list the current logs
21:56<sleser>yeh the one that sais ok and failed

21:58<somiaj>sleser: if you don't have persistance enabled you can't see previous boot info, but I would jsut worry about this one

22:04<somiaj>yea systemclt will list all units (and I think the only place you can figure out which one failed) and systemctl status gives you a nice overview showing only currently running units and list number failed but might not give the name of the actual unit that failed

23:43<astronut>yes
23:44<twb>Which bootloader did you install
23:44<jmcnaught>i was asking those questions because live disks don't support UEFI, and if you use something like unetbootin or copy to a partition it can cause these types of problem

23:45<astronut>jmcnaught: ah
23:45<astronut>twb: it was definately grub for jessie, i didn't specify for stretch, so it'd be whatever the default was
