13:39<cruncher>Celelibi, on what criteria are they removed?
13:39<cruncher>and i dont understand the point of that..
13:39<Celelibi>THey are not removed, they are just listed.
13:40<Celelibi>It would be a kind of dpigs on steroids.
13:40<cruncher>aha
13:40<cruncher>as you said "to find sets of packages to remove to free some disk space"...
13:41<Celelibi>Yes, the user choose to remove them or not.
13:41<cruncher>i f someone needs more space, he'll remove packages he doesnt need, also you can use deborphan to check
13:41<cruncher>for orphaned packages, as the name suggests
13:41-!-hele [~hele@a91-154-152-48.elisa-laajakaista.fi] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
13:42<Celelibi>Look at deborphan, it doesn't take into account the dependencies.
13:42<cruncher>true
13:42<Celelibi>You often have to run several loops of deborphan + apt-get purge.
13:42<cruncher>if i would want to know which packages use the most space, dpigs is one, and synaptic.
13:43<Celelibi>dpigs doesn't take into account the dependencies.
13:43<cruncher>Celelibi, yes, thats true... but after 1-3 times the orphans/dependencies are "clean" again
13:43<cruncher>but yes, why not, have a dpigs+deborphan together :)
13:43<Celelibi>Maybe some project have a core package with very little code, but everything is in some -data -common lib* package.
13:44<Celelibi>So you wouldn't know if removing a package would make autoremove free some more disk space.
13:45<cruncher>i believe apt-get shows that, and synaptic as wekll
13:45<Celelibi>Yes, for one given package.
13:46<Celelibi>Not for all of them allowing the user to choose what to actually remove.
13:46<Celelibi>(BTW, I'm not sure apt-get would show that. It will just remove the one package to asked and tell other packages can be autoremoved.)

13:47<Celelibi>Kind of.
13:47<cruncher>not bad idea... improvement is always good
13:48<cruncher>but just an idea: why dont take a existing tool, add functionality, add submit it is patch/contact the authors?

16:52<Beowulf>Hi, I upgrade my repos to testing and did an apt-get dist-upgrade. The upgrade fetch kernel 4.8 and set it up, but when I try to boot into it, it restarts after a second or two. I've tried rescue mode for 4.8 as well, but no luck. I have to boot with the linux kernel from debian stable before I can actually get in. Any suggestions?

16:54<jim>Beowulf, just that the kernel in testing isn't working on your machine for some reason... you successfully ruled out everything other than the kernel when you tried (I guess) the 3.16.* kernel
16:55<Beowulf>jim, it's the only thing i have to go off of, since nothing seems to be logged when I try to boot into 4.8
16:56<Beowulf>nothing in the /var/log folder has been updated in hours, and i just tried to boot into 4.8 minutes ago

16:58<jim>a couple of places should be on your radar... one, #debian-next supports all things testing.... second, maybe debian-boot could tell you what you can do to get more verbose logs (or just any logs)... having said that, they're working on the installer, so they'll be generally busy... just keep that in mind when you interact with them

19:32<rno>Andyj : it's strange a gnome package being an obstacle, it's not related... perhaps with aptitude try 'U' -updating list- then 'g' -download packages-
19:33<rno>it will display a proposed list, then 'g' again
19:33<blast007>AndyJ: you don't want to mix stable and testing, if that's what you meant by "repositories for testing"
19:33<mrphs>i dont even know whether this is the right place to ask this question. but basically i want all the requests sent to port 9000 be sent over socks5 proxy - using iptables or any other magic

23:19<AndyJ>OK I'm really stuck.
23:21<AndyJ>After booting there is no USB, hence no keyboard, no mouse, etc. I CANNOT ssh in either. I am able to enter commands at the GRUB stage. If I let the system boot, I see lots of USB errors can anyone explain how I can enter kernel params etc. via grub (cannot edit any files) to see if I can get past this?

23:54<somiaj>AndyJ: for why xorg won't start check the xorg log, /var/log/Xorg.0.log
23:54<somiaj>you might just need some non-free firmware with the radeon driver for that card. Though I'm not to familar with radeon cards and what is supported in jessie
