00:01<AndyJ>There's a pile of errors after loading glamor OpenGL accelaration
00:01<AndyJ>ends with a segfault signal 11
00:02<somiaj>driver issue, figure out what driver you need for your card.
00:02<somiaj>this is debian jessie?
00:02<somiaj>is'nt the RX480 a newer card?
00:03<somiaj>oh yea, it is a vr card. Unsure how well those will be supported in jessie, if possible at a minimum you'll probabaly need the firmware and kernel for the radeon driver from jessie-backports. Unsure if the vendor driver would be better for this card or not either.
00:03<AndyJ>Yes and no, this was jessie, is now jessie with some backports, and yes its a relatively new (six months old) card

00:18<somiaj>AndyJ: I'm not seeing anything that is going to be easy. It appears that the newer mesa needed to support your card isn't even in debian sid yet, and with the freeze it may be a while until Debian supports that card nicely.
00:19<AndyJ>Yeah, this was why I was trying to bring stuff in from testing, but that didn't go well. :(
00:19<somiaj>AndyJ: I did find some hacks to install the offical amd ubuntu driver in testing. Unsure if it will work with jessie though. And it does require modifing the isntall script to install on an os the driver wasn't built for.
00:19<somiaj>AndyJ: you don't want to mix testing/stable, that will break y our system and not be supported.
00:19<AndyJ>yep
00:19-!-petersob [~quassel@ool-944bcab9.dyn.optonline.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:19<somiaj>if you have already mixed, I would fix that first before worring about your gpu
00:20<somiaj>but anyways, I don't see any easy solution, and in terms of the Debian freeze, you will have to do some work to get that card to work in debian. In ubuntu, amd makes a driver for it. some have used the amd driver in debian testing (Wtih soem work)
00:20<AndyJ>without a desktop, I'm struggling to achieve much.
00:20-!-ol [~quassel@2406:e006:1a5e:1:8e89:a5ff:feca:57fe] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:21<somiaj>You don't have another gpu/machine you can use?
00:21<AndyJ>time for me to learn how to use aptitude I guess.
00:22<AndyJ>I think I'll be able to boot the affected machine into an earlier version, now that I have grub sorted, I'll give that a go for now.
00:22<somiaj>I would almost suggest just using debian testing (you mostly are going to be without security support) and then use the hack to install the amdgpu-pro driver in Debian and hope it works.
00:22<somiaj>if you really want to use Debian with that card.
00:22<somiaj>You might be able to get it to work in jessie, but I haven't seen any thing on google of people doing that.
00:22<AndyJ>I do have an older card HD 6950, I could put that back in (hopefully there is a compatible slot)
00:22<somiaj>and it own't be as easy as testing if you require more than just a newer kernel.

00:24<somiaj>AndyJ: https://linuxconfig.org/getting-the-rx-480-running-with-amdgpu-on-linux I found this as well, but this is for the open driver, not the one amdgpu-pro from the vendor.
00:24<somiaj>and note, you have to do a lot of work in debian sid according to that guide (unsure how much it has changed)
00:26-!-petersob [~quassel@ool-944bcab9.dyn.optonline.net] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
00:28<somiaj>actually mesa 13.0 is now in testing, so really testing could support that card, it just may require some work.
00:28<AndyJ>Yeah, that was my starting point, but tried to avoid some of the worst of it by installing the 4.7 kernel...
00:28<AndyJ>Any guesses when it will make it into jessie?
00:29<somiaj>jessie doesn't work that way.
00:29<somiaj>it is frozen, things don't make it into jessie. Things are in jessie, and get fixed if there is a bug.
00:29<somiaj>(well a rc bug, small bugs do exist)
00:30<somiaj>,v libgl1-mesa-glx
00:30<judd>Package: libgl1-mesa-glx on amd64 -- wheezy: 8.0.5-4+deb7u2; wheezy-security: 8.0.5-4+deb7u2; jessie: 10.3.2-1+deb8u1; jessie-backports: 12.0.4-2~bpo8+1; stretch: 13.0.2-3; sid: 13.0.2-3

00:30<somiaj>AndyJ: yea that says that 12.0.4 is in jessie-backports, guide needs 12.1. Maybe 13.0 will be backported, but there is no guarntee or timeline for that.
00:31-!-f10 [~flo@2001:470:52af:1:49f8:fac8:591e:a236] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:31<somiaj>AndyJ: I would just suggest testing. It is freezing and will become stable, but I just think you'll have far less prolbmes with that newer hardware than getting it to work on jessie.
00:31-!-kj4zek [~kj4zek@68-112-52-250.static.hlrg.nc.charter.com] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:31<AndyJ>Or I should just wait for stretch to be released?
00:33<somiaj>personal choice. After feb 5th the full freeze will be done, and so if you aren't to worried about security support it will only have bug fixes until the release after that (no new software)
00:34<somiaj>so it is usable and getting more and more stable daily. Waiting to the release means you either keep tryign to get the hardware to work in jessie (not finding any clear guides)
00:34<somiaj>or wait to use it.
00:34<somiaj>(or use ubuntu or something else in the time being if you don't want to run testing until the release)
00:35<somiaj>AndyJ: I'm just not seeing much of anything for getting that card working in jessie when I search in google.
00:35<AndyJ>no me neither...
00:36<somiaj>I run stretch on my desktop. But i'm behind a router and don't use many services. i do keep my eye on the dsfg if my browser has a security bug and had to install a newer one from sid manually because of that.
00:36<somiaj>sorry not dsfg, dsa (debian-sercurity-annoucment mailing list)
00:37<AndyJ>interesting choices.
00:38<AndyJ>So... if I change all the references in sources.list to stretch (or testing) and then run a full upgrade... that should get me there?

00:39<somiaj>you will want to stabilize with stretch.
00:39<somiaj>note there are some bugs, but these bugs may be more managable than getting that hardware to work in jessie

00:40<somiaj>for support with testing that is
00:41<AndyJ>Ta :) so, step by step... 1. change sources to "stretch" 2. apt-get update 3. apt-get upgrade ?
00:42<somiaj>you will need dist-upgrade to fully upgrade
00:42<somiaj>3) deal with any bugs you find.
00:42<somiaj>arg 4.
00:43<AndyJ>I haven't found any bugs for a looooooong time... So step 3. is apt-get dist-upgrade ?
00:43<somiaj>yes
00:43<AndyJ>Cool, I'll give it a whirl.
00:43<awal1>you may want to simulate the migration first, AndyJ
00:45<somiaj>AndyJ: also remove any unoffical sources, and the less packages you upgrade the easier, so a minimial install is easier than upgrading a full desktop.
00:45<AndyJ>apt-get dist-upgrade -s ?

00:49<AndyJ>Yep so step 3. is -s and possibly step 4. is give it a whirl

14:03<rafikueng>Hi guys. I'm trying to update my initram-fs, but if fails. Can anyone help?
14:03<rafikueng>I'm on a fresh install of debian jessie, using EFI and full disk encryption. After the first boot, the keyboard works in GRUB, but not to enter my crypto psw. I read up and found that I should add:
14:03<rafikueng>hid; usbhid; hid_generic; ohci_pci
14:03<rafikueng>to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules . and then run update-initramfs -u

14:24<rafikueng>ahh sorry for the messed up line breaks
14:25<namosca>SynrGy Is there a chance that creating a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with the command Driver "modesetting" on it will create trouble later when I have to update something automatically?
14:31-!-jmux [~jmux@lhm246.muenchen.de] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
14:36<SynrGy>namosca: well, address your questions to the channel, as the channel as a whole is much smarter than just me. i'm no expert. :)
14:37<towo`>namosca, why should it create trouble?
14:38-!-jhutchins_wk [~jonathan@99.198.231.49] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
14:38<SynrGy>there's only one scenario where it might: if you also use Xorg in a context in which the file is loaded but the settings within the file are not applicable to that Xserver. but that isn't so much an "upgrade" problem as a "new hardware" (or virtual video device, in my case) problem. I had just one such case recently ...
14:39<namosca> towo` Because me, as a newbie, am afraid that this manually inserted option would not be managed by automatic systems like apt or similar package managing systems on the future when there is some update or something similar
14:39<SynrGy>i recently started using xrdp with the xorgxrdp backend. the Xorg instance started by the xrdp server was automatically picking up all config fragments from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ without regards for whether it was applicable or not
14:39<SynrGy>that's a rather esoteric use case, though
14:40<SynrGy>and arguably, xrdp should be fixed so that it won't do that.
14:40<towo`>that's why /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is for user settings
14:40<namosca>SynrGy Thanks for the info and for the politeness

19:05<lindi->bonefish: https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=timedate1&perpkg=1 suggests that gnome, kde and e17 use the org.freedesktop.timedate1 API to configure time settings. It doesn't find xfce so I don't know what it does
19:05<lindi->jasabella: in general I would never recommend X11 forwarding
19:05<bonefish>dangit
19:06<lindi->jasabella: since a malicious server can take over your local system

19:08<lindi->jasabella: you can run the application on a normal desktop system and use e.g. strace to see what files is accesses

19:44<somiaj>ntpd should do that for you automatically, but it slowly adjust the time to avoid large time jumps. You can use ntpdate to set it, or you can use any other tool to manually set the hardware clock.
19:45<dvs>Beowulf, you set the BIOS clock to local time since you changed the line in adjtime to "LOCAL"
19:47<Beowulf>somiaj, even though i apt-get installed ntp, i don't have ntpdate

19:49<Beowulf>hmm, running "dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" still shows the wrong UTC time
19:50<dvs>Beowulf, you still need to set the BIOS clock to the proper local time.
19:52<Beowulf>dvs, is it possible to do that from debian, or do I have to reboot?
