04:54<friese2>hi
04:55<friese2>im trying out debian testing/stretch right now and missing the "hardening-check" script, which was in the "hardening-includes" package which seems to be deprecated now
04:56<friese2>is there any replacement for that? just running the old script from jessie seems to work fine on stretch, but wondering if there's a better solution

05:03<friese2>yeah, dpkg-buildflags seems fine for building debian packages, i however just need to check an already existing binary in a script... is that possible too?

09:45<eric_>I seek assistance with an install issue of NTP here on my debian 8 pc...am I in a good place?
09:45<petn-randall>eric_: Sure, ask ahead. Here are some useful hints:
09:45<petn-randall>!ask
09:45<dpkg>If you have a question, just ask! For example: "I have a problem with ___; I'm running Debian version ___. When I try to do ___ I get the following output ___. I expected it to do ___." Don't ask if you can ask, if anyone uses it, or pick one person to ask. We're all volunteers; make it easy for us to help you. If you don't get an answer try a few hours later or on debian-user@lists.debian.org. See <smart questions><errors>.

10:41<MarcL>so in Jessie the applications will never be updated unless there will be a big problem of stability or safety, is it right?
10:41<jim>yeah, as far as I know that's what the situation is
10:49<MarcL>for example file-roller, on packages.debian.org, for Jessie there is the 3.14, for Stretch and Sid there is the 3.22
10:50<MarcL>if I would like to install the Stretch version to have the newer version of that application how should i do?
10:51<jim>you can "backport"

10:51<jim>get the source from sid (or testing)
10:51<hexa->there are usually alot of interdependencies in there
10:51<jim>build the package on your stable
10:51<jim>install that package
10:52<jim>yeah, the process may not be so simple as that

13:14<somiaj>the -t is probably not needed.
13:14<Celelibi>But kept lying around.
13:15<Echoz>Celelibi: according to to archive.debian.org liblzma2 was in squeeze
13:15<Celelibi>This system was installed in 2007.
13:16<somiaj>Celelibi: when upgrading (or dist-upgrading) some packages don't get removed. usually the release notes say you should remove obsolete packages after the upgrade.
13:16<Celelibi>What release note? :)
13:16<somiaj>Celelibi: you can find them with aptitude search ~o (these are packages that were installed but are no longer evalable)
13:16<Echoz>can you paste the output of "dpkg show liblzma2" to https://echoz.rocks/paste/
13:16<somiaj>Celelibi: each release has a set of release notes with it telling you how to upgrade.

13:19<MarcL>https://paste.debian.net/906211/
