12:34<MoonlightUmbreon>So... no ideas? of what could be happening? I'm really confused about this
12:34<Huita>Hello! I've made a script that works fine with "python /blablabla/script.py" in terminal, but it doesn't work in crontab. Some other script works in crontab with the same settings. So,

12:34<Huita>1) What can make python scripts work via crontab under certain conditions but not under other conditions? What are the conditions?
12:35<Huita>2) Is there a way to sidestep the issue by making some script that definitely works in cron - like bash script or something - that would call python script the terminal way?
12:35<petn-randall>Huita: cron doesn't set most of the environment variables, for example $PATH. So you need to have a full path for every command you run.
12:35<Huita>Oooh
12:35<Huita>Yeah, that might be the issue
12:35<Huita>i had it read and write into files in the same folder, so naturally i didn''t set paths...

12:44<petn-randall>MoonlightUmbreon: Probably because the www-data user doesn't have permissions to access the video device, and doesn't have a valid login session, etc.

18:46<somiaj>amdgpu-pro is made by amd and only for ubuntu (you have to do some edits to get it to work in debian), amdgpu is a free driver that is in debian
18:46<somiaj>!amdgpu

18:47<somiaj>you can get that from jessie-backports, will need a newer kernel and firmware-amd-graphics -- note this is for newer cards and what you will need in stretch. If the fglrx driver in jessie works for your card, you can still use it, it is just no longer supported by amd anymore

18:54<somiaj>since fglrx doesn't work with gnome, there might only be a few hold outs still using it. But yes this transformation from fglrx to amdgpu-pro is going to cause issues with jessie->stretch for those not ready for it.
18:55<somiaj>afiak the only way to get amdgpu-pro in debian is to hack the amd installer script to look for 'debian' instead of 'ubuntu' when doing some check
18:55<cruncher>but, kernel 4.9 should have "basic" southern islands support, so maybe some people are lucky

20:41<somiaj>rhiamom: what card do you have?
20:41<somiaj>rhiamom: it might be you have to use the radeon driver for older cards.
20:41<rhiamom>R9 270X
20:42<rhiamom>chipset name Pitcairn according to the Gentoo wiki
20:43<somiaj>well reading a form the the opensource radeon drivers are at gl 4.3 and have mostly caught up with Catalyst performance. I know ati/amd worked with the radeon drivers, maybe trying the radeon driver and kernel from backports to see if you notice a huge difference from that vs fglrx, this says there shoudln't be one.
20:44<rhiamom>right. Maybe I will try again, but I was unable to get better than 1024 out of it when I had it installed. I got better graphics from my integrated chipset
20:45<rhiamom>am using 3.16 kernel, nothing too bleeding edge

20:46<somiaj>you will need a backported kernel as well, since the drivers are also part of the kernel.
20:46<rhiamom>yeah...
20:47<somiaj>from what I see the amdgpu + firmware shoudl support that card. you just need to get the kernel, driver and firmware from jessie-backports
20:47<somiaj>or just wait until you upgrade to stretch and deal with this then.
20:47<rhiamom>that seems like what I will do.

20:47<somiaj>rhiamom: is this an SI card?
20:48<rhiamom>si??
20:49<somiaj>I'm seeing some info about 4.9 being the kernel that has a lot of amdgpu improvements and a possible LTS kernel, so might be worth waiting for that kernel to try it out with your card
20:49<somiaj>,kernels
20:49<judd>Available kernel versions are: experimental: 4.8.0-rc8-686-pae (4.8~rc8-1~exp1); sid: 4.8.0-2-686-pae (4.8.15-2); stretch: 4.8.0-2-686-pae (4.8.15-2); jessie-backports: 4.8.0-0.bpo.2-686-pae (4.8.11-1~bpo8+1); jessie: 3.16.0-4-686-pae (3.16.36-1+deb8u2); wheezy-backports: 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae (3.16.36-1+deb8u2~bpo70+1); wheezy: 3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.84-1)
20:49<somiaj>rhiamom: multiple pci-e cards linked together, forget what SI actually stands for
20:50<rhiamom>nope, one card, 2 slots
20:50<somiaj>oh it is sli
20:50<rhiamom>It was once a windoze gaming box, so has a monster gaming video card
20:51<rhiamom>yes, sli, but not being used in conjunction with another sli card, so just one lone video card
20:51<somiaj>anyways, saw some issues mentioned about support for sli, but I don't know ati hardware (I use nvidia here)
20:52<rhiamom>I don't need sli. I don't even have 2 sli cards to use together to need SLI
20:52<somiaj>but for stretch you'll want to use amdgpu with that card as fglrx is no longer supported. There is a hybrid amdgpu-pro non-free driver that may give some more advantanges, but unsure the best way to deal with that in debian.
20:52<rhiamom>it's like crossfire for Nvidia - the card is capable, but not being used that way
20:53<somiaj>wonder if pluging into two slots, it is sli but rapped together. Though I'm outdated, I haven't gotten a new graphics card in a while
20:53<rhiamom>Unless stretch adds support for my chipset I can't use amdgpu!
20:53<somiaj>mine only plugs into one slot, though it is big, 770GTX
20:53<somiaj>it seems it is going to be in the 4.9 kernel which I think is going to be in stretch
20:54<rhiamom>yes, 2 slot width, not using both
20:54<somiaj>oh yea, mine is the same then
20:55<rhiamom>yes, same thing, different names
20:55<somiaj>I thought you meant you pluged it into two pci-e slots, not size of card. (:
20:56<rhiamom>the AMD website does not list my card as one that can use that amdgpu-pro driver
20:56<rhiamom>I was not clear
20:57<somiaj>found this, "This article by gentoo identifies your GPU R9 270X (Southern Islands, Pitcairn) and the firmware binaries provided since Kernel 4.9-rc1: wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AMDGPU" so you may just need to wait for the 4.9 kernel which I think is the one that will be released with stretch
20:57<rhiamom>I will wait until stretch is frozen, at least, and as you say for the 4.9 kernel
20:57<newbie>Got some info from Xorg.0.log, on my not loading Xorg, I cannot post it here with my current knowledge of linux, since the system it is on is in safe mode only. EE lines point to devices not beign there, like /dev/dri/card0, or /dev/fb0, is this normal could that be the proble,m?
