Can someone tell me how to fix this? Also, before the rebuild, I was able to right click on my cinnamon panels and click "add new panel", but no I can't. Can someone tell me how to fix that as well?

13:59<BluesKaj>howdy folks
14:01<somiaj>greetings
14:03<olivetree>hi
14:04<BluesKaj>reinstalled debian-jessie 8.7.1 KDE a few days ago and I'm very pleased with it
14:05<somiaj>Provided you stick with packages built for debian jessie, it is a well tested os that is known to work well with the versions debian provides.
14:06<somiaj>Stretch is on its way, so that is nice.
14:06<tomcres>Unfortunately stretch comes with plasma 5
14:06<BluesKaj>the only differences are kodi-jarvis and chromium
14:07<somiaj>DE's are all overrated.

14:10<BluesKaj>not a fan of plasma 5 due to some fav features were dropped
14:11<BluesKaj>so i won't be installing stretch anytime soon
14:12<somiaj>maybe bug KDE developers to include some classic mode, but the push seems to be more simplistic/tablet driven UI's, and at some level the old desktop is slowly being replaced, but luckly there are many who will still want the old style.
14:12<somiaj>BluesKaj: you will eventaully have to for security support. jessie will only be supported for desktops for about a year after the release of stretch. LTS support will exist, but only for server side software.

14:24<lindi->xterm doesn't even have a public version control system, the upstream just releases tar balls of releases
14:25<BluesKaj>I lean towards media and HTPC apps etc since this pc is our media server

14:31<somiaj>lindi-: yea, lots of the older software is that way, I use very little of none of the freedesktop.org stuff directly, all my menus are still manually configured.
14:32<lindi->somiaj: if you use qt or gtk you don't really have these problems though
14:32<lindi->somiaj: and since I use the terminal all the time I just couldn't cope with this clipboard confusion and switched to libvte
14:32<somiaj>lindi-: but a lot depends on what a user wants. Lots of the older standard *nix apps haven't really caught up to the new freedesktop.org standards, even though those are now getting quite old and common.

14:33<somiaj>though I rarely use the freedesktop clipboard and just use the middle mouse button.
14:34<lindi->somiaj: screen has it's own problems of course, can't really copy more than what fits to the screen
14:34<lindi->somiaj: I always just ended up using screen's internal copy mechanism and copying the data to a file which I could then open in some editor outside screen
14:34<lindi->somiaj: middle button is not very nice on a touch screen either :)

22:21<nutron>Well, I'm looking into it since by default it seems that fluxbox doesn't somehow. ie: upon fresh install it doesn't have menu entries for some packages.

22:27<ryouma>what is a .desktop file?
22:27<somiaj>fluxbox is in that category, openbox/i3 seem to be the wms with a currently bigger community with all the modern adoptations
22:27<nutron>right, ok I've been using flux for years, and today I finally got fed up by not being able to start libre office from the menu.
22:28<somiaj>ryouma: freedesktop.org standard for writting launchers for menu fiels and other things. same standard is used to put the launchers in an autostart directory that many xdg complient wms/de's will load by default. A wm that doesn't support that will need to be manually configured to launch things
22:28<ryouma>hmm, i i'd switch if i could get my modest dealbreaker wm needs, which only fluxbox seems to fill (slit so i can autohide gkrellm, etc.)
22:28<nutron>Yeah, flux is slow to change, barely maintained, but openbox is much harder to configure from what I remember, and i3 last I tried it didn't do multi-head well due to the nvidia drivers being broken.
22:29<awal1>only openbox and fvwm are fine now with .desktop files via (lxdemenu-data, gnome-menus...), nutron
22:29<somiaj>I thought i3 had RandR support which should support the nvidia drivers
22:29<awal1>well, also e17
22:29<ryouma>hmm, menus stuff seems to work just fine in jessie for me but i guess maybe that wil change
22:29<somiaj>well I did a lot of work to make fvwm able to work with xdg-menus, (:
22:29<ryouma>every time i update a package it gets added to fluxbox menu. works fine.
22:29<awal1>the "perfetc" solution under debian for all wm's is solving this https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=815184
22:29<nutron>somiaj: yeah it's probably fixed, it was an issue with the nvidia drivers not supporting RandR (ages ago).

22:32<nutron>somiaj: indeed, yep, also there were issues with other things in i3, I really liked it, but a few years back there were deal breaking issues with it.
22:32<somiaj>yea it appears debian doesn't pacakge that xdg-menu script, you could grab it and run it from your $HOME dir, as it should be able to generate mensu for fluxbox, note you'll most likely want a menu insatlled, I find lxmenu-data from lxde the nicest menu.
22:33<somiaj>nutron: you may want to give it another try if you are looking for a more modern wm that supports a lot of this stuff out of the box. Being an fvwm user I've learned to live with its limitations because it really hasn't changed much in years and years
22:34<nutron>somiaj: yep, though what keeps you running fvwm as your daily driver?
22:34<somiaj>I have yet to find a wm that is as configurable and does what I like.

22:47<awal1>ryouma, you may be "wrong" ; I don't know fvwm well but all your "needs" can also be done under openbox

22:48<somiaj>sometimes ones needs are what one is use to that already works. Might be why I stick with fvwm.
22:48<awal1>but editing files; flux root menu is more user friendly
22:49<ryouma>awal1: that would be great. i had the impression it could not do them.
22:50<awal1>well, I'm not into x vs y, I also have fluxbox installed and use it sometimes, but for heavy use, multimonitors and so, I have found openbox more robust

22:51<awal1>compared to flux ^
22:52<yulax>theyre basically the same business
22:52<awal1>fvwm is the most configurable I have tried, but also the most complex :P

22:53<yulax>i recommend ratpoison as a novel and lightweight experience
22:53<somiaj>tiling wms are really nice for those who like them.
22:54<somiaj>though I think awesome is the current one over ratpoision I hear about, no shortage of wms to choose from in debian. blackbox is even still around, though of the foobox, I don't see anyone running that anymore
22:56<ryouma>last i checked open couldn't do them all, but maybe stretch version i will try again if i can

23:04<awal1>ryouma, all what I meant is that some fluxbox features are provided natively, but openbox or any other wm's can do with a few extra utilities
23:04<awal1>that's why flux is heavier than openbox or fvwm

23:20<awal1>openbox and fluxbox are blackbox based, the code of both is very similar
23:21<ryouma>by zoom i mean compiz or osx type zooming. if i put mouse pointer on top edge, and click left, i want root menu + window menu. or autohide taskbar.

23:34<awal1>then just use kde
