00:10<bengali>Test
00:10<bengali>I feel like an idiot now, but I have a sall question:
00:11<bengali>With XFCE, I droppe my keyboard from my lap, and all of a sudden the screen zoomed into the upper left corner. I thought nothing much of it. But now I can't see most of the screen...
00:11<libregeekingkid[m]>have you tried logging out and logging back again
00:11<libregeekingkid[m]>?
00:12<libregeekingkid[m]>or may be a reboot?
00:12<somiaj>sounds like you hit some zoom keybinding, I don't know xfce to know its default keybindings for stuff like that though
00:12<bengali>I am guessing the keyboard hit some combnation similar to alt+mouse down, but that is bound to
00:12<bengali>change workspace withme
00:12<bengali>exactly

00:13-!-Atm0spher1c is "Atm0spher1c" on #debian #debian-next
00:13<bengali>was hoping to avaoid a reboot/logout, because I ahve a lot of stuff open that would be a pain t save without seeinghardly anything

00:13<bengali>I can access a terminal, so anything terminal wide can be done
00:13<bengali>*terminal wise
00:13<annadane>i would suggest reloading the x window manager but i don't know if that would close all the open programs
00:14<bengali>similar to alt+ mouse up I mean. Which, afaik, is a zoom hotkey in xfce bty default
00:14-!-marcio_souza [~marcio@189.6.115.113] has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
00:14<bengali>I suspect it would crash them all :P
00:14<somiaj>hmm, google seems to suggest alt+mousewheel
00:14<bengali>yeah, which doesn't work
00:14<bengali>just changes workspace from 1 to 2, or back again
00:15<annadane>or alternatively don't be an idiot like i am and find the zoom hotkey and reverse it that way
00:15<bengali>:P
00:16<bengali>thanks for the effort so far
00:17<bengali>I'm going to hang here for a few hours in case someone very familiar with XFCE stops by

00:17-!-ajason [~ajason@183.150.13.122] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:18<bengali>btw, I found the xfce4-display-settings binary, and changed the screen resolution around a bit:
00:18<bengali>Absolutely no effect that I could see
00:18<bengali>probably because the little part of the screen I see fits in all of the modes :P
00:19<bengali>hmm, but the background doesn't seem to resize when I change resolution either. Just nothing happens
00:20<bengali>anyway: Are you familiar with screen zooming in XFCE? Text me ;)

03:36<twb>I have parted and a 2TB disk. The disk has a corrupt mishmash of GPT and MBR partition tables on it.
03:37<twb>I want to wipe both GPT and MBR metadata completely, then start over with just MBR. I don't want to wipe the entire drive (it'll take too long).
03:37<twb>What parts of the drive do I need to wipe? it's not just the first few sectors anymore because GPT keeps backups of itself... somewhere
03:42<jm_>but doesn't MBR contain the first part for GPT too? i.e. if you nuke that, then create new GPT, do you care about the rest?
03:44<twb>I dunno
03:44<fernie>use wipefs for the device / or partitions
03:44<twb>I tried just doing parted mklabel msdos, and now partprobe and parted print don't complain about corrupt GPT anymore

03:53<twb>What do you still use flash for? Maybe there is an alternative.
03:53<Nick```>for websites that run using flash? flash isnt just used for video which is ofc. covered with html5

03:53<Nick```>pepper what?
03:54<Nick```>ive always just apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree and jobs a goodun

07:01<k>hello :) (Im new on IRC, so I try to be polite and I'm happy if you could help me with my issue)
07:02<Hatsjoe>k: since you are new, on IRC, you should not ask to ask, just ask
07:03<k>Have Debian 8 on my machine which has an encripted SSD. Today -as every day- I've tried to log on and my sda3_crypt *encription password* didn't work anymore.
07:04<Hatsjoe>how was the volume encrypted?

07:05<Hatsjoe>Are we talking about your root volume here? As in, you have to enter the password directly after grub?

07:06<Hatsjoe>Are you having issues now with unlocking it, or do you want to know more about how to report this bug/issue?
07:08<k>After I've realized I tried the passphrase using the US-standard layout (have the standard german layout) and i've succeeded to log on
07:09<k>However, since maybe others are affected, and since it could be a bug I would like to report it to the right developers
07:10<Hatsjoe>I suspect it's not a bug, but an error in your configuration instead
07:10<Hatsjoe>When using custom keyboard layouts (such as german), you should also configure this in grub and all in order for it to be applied during boot
07:10<Hatsjoe>I think somehow, during an update, your grub config got regenerated causing it to lose this kind of config
07:11<k>OK, but this issue never happend until now?

10:47<mumbl>piper, it must be something about my hardware. dd did the same error as 4.3.3

12:39<somiaj>note we really don't support vmware here, as it is third party, so you'll have better luck with virtualbox support here.

12:42<somiaj>but the main error you have is intel-vx is diabled, most likey in your bios. On most machines I have used, that setting is truned off by default and I had to go into my bios to turn on the hardware virtualization features
12:42<somiaj>so it maybe that vbox is trying to use the hardware features when you use a 64bit os, but fully emulating the enviroment for the 32bit os.
12:42<somiaj>so go turn on that feature in your bios.
12:42<somiaj>(well firmware, I just call it bios out of habbit)
12:43<linux7>hmmm i don't like BIOS problems :)
12:43<linux7>but ah well thanks for the information.
12:43<somiaj>it is just a setting you have to turn on.
12:44<linux7>first BIOS problems is mostly in the BIOS: secure boot into disabled and secure boot keys into disabled to get rid of windows 10.

15:30<thetom>I'm trying to get Jessie working on my new htpc based on a asrock j4205(apollo lake). I installed Jessie and upgraded the kernel to the backport version because I read that apollo lake is supported in kernel >4.8. Unfortunately I can only access to the command line but not to gnome. Where may I start digging?
15:31<real007>tethom what kernel you compile

15:32<jelly>thetom: don't bother with jessie, go stretch immediately as the versions of software across the stack have a better chance to work
15:32<jelly>(kernel, xorg, drm, mesa)
15:33<thetom>jelly: thanks but I'd better like to go with Jessie because I'd like to install openmediavault that now is said to be working only on jessie

15:34<jelly>then you're going to have an interesting time getting backports for all the necessary bits
15:35<thetom>jelly: that's what I was thinking too
15:35<jelly>thetom: xserver-xorg-video-intel, libgl1-mesa-dri, maybe others I don't remember
15:36<jelly>possibly use xserver-xorg-video-modesetting instead of video-intel
15:36<somiaj>if I recall correctly it takes a bit of work to upgrade to the backported mesa, and even then that was still a dated version and might not be fully compadable with the newer hardware.
15:37<somiaj>thetom: why not look for another media vault solution that works in stretch for that hardware?
15:37*spacebug^ recently got his Asus Vivo Mini working by enableing jessie backports and installing xserver-xorg-video-intel, libdrm and new kernel
15:37<jelly>i don't remember if apollo lake requires firmware
15:38<jelly>kaby lake does (for some functionality?)
15:38<thetom>even more good news here! Thank you guys. You're really making me consider to go with stretch and forget about openmediavault
