04:50<localhorst>I'm not sure if it's advised to do that but I guess you would just need to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list appropriately.
04:50<larjona>Linnak: you can't. That's what will happen in mid-June. If you are in stable (Jessie) now, and you want to upgrade to Stretch, you just review the release notes and do the upgrade. If you are in testing now (Stretch), and you want to stay in Stretch when it becomes stable, just edit your apt sources and write "stretch" instead of "testing"
04:50<Linnak>Thank you

11:07<petn-randall>supaman: Is this on jessie?
11:07<supaman>yeah
11:08<petn-randall>supaman: The usual way is to provide a full config file and pass that with --config. I'm assuming that your parameters are not enough to start it, and the error message is just misleading.
11:09<supaman>petn-randall: ah, ok, will try that
11:10<supaman>openvpn --mktun --dev tun0 --config /etc/openvpn/server.conf gives the same error, except now it doesn't write it to stdout but in the log file defined in the config file
11:11<petn-randall>supaman: Just don't call --mktun at all, it's usually not needed.
11:12<supaman>systemd start openvpn@server.service gives a slightly different error, namely: tun: Unknown symbol __sk_attach_filter (err 0)
11:12<petn-randall>supaman: That hints towards you not having a clean jessie installation. Do you have a custom kernel?
11:13<supaman>petn-randall: nope, uname -a gives: Linux workman 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u3 (2015-08-04) x86_64 GNU/Linux

11:34<Dragomir>different designs
11:35<danielsh`>UEFI spec is distro-agnostic
11:35<danielsh`>recreating all partitions wouldn't have sufficed, it wouldn't have installed a bootloader
11:35<danielsh`>boot from a USB stick, chroot into the system, run grub-install
11:35<Dragomir>Note:
11:35<danielsh`>and cross fingers
11:35<Dragomir> While some distributions require a /boot/efi or /boot/EFI directory, Arch does not.
11:35<Dragomir>on their wiki
11:36<danielsh`>no time to look now sorry, in middle of something else
11:36<Dragomir>but debian live has no UEFI image
11:36<Dragomir>then just anything will be sufficient, e.g. lubuntu?
11:36<Dragomir>ok, I'll note you later about results
11:36<danielsh`>please do
11:36<danielsh`>good luck :)

15:25<annadane>guilherme, if you do install that, install from the repository, it should be in there
15:25<annadane>,v lynis

15:25<guardian>hello, I started following the upgrade guide to upgrade a box from wheezy to jessie and I'm getting "Ignoring Provides line with DebCompareOp for package python-cffi-backend-api-max" warning
15:25<guardian>what should I do>
15:25<guardian>?
15:25<annadane>(in other words not from github)
15:25<rudi_s>guilherme: Installing all software-update is the most important part.
15:26<annadane>but in general you don't need an antivirus for linux
15:26<annadane>there are, as mentioned, things like selinus/apparmor
15:26<annadane>selinux*
15:26<rudi_s>And a secure browser, I'd recommend chromium, but firefox is fine too.
15:26<rudi_s>selinux and apparmor can be nice for servers, but require a distribution with proper configuration. Sadly debian has no proper support for selinux or apparmor.
15:27<annadane>there's also clamav if you really need it, which also comes with the repository. and beyond that, i'll leave it to others more experienced to answer

15:27<MTTIT[m]>there are some profiles for apparmor in repos, i.e. firefox
15:28<annadane>(disclaimer: i don't bother with any kind of antivirus myself)
15:28<annadane>there's also i suppose iptables for jessie and nftables for stretch if you want a firewall
15:29<MTTIT[m]>firewall for desktop is basically block all incoming
15:30<annadane>(note that nftables replaces iptables and stretch is due to become stable as of june 17)
15:30<MTTIT[m]>there is attempt to make user friendly firewall https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch
15:30<MTTIT[m]>which detects apps that connects to network
15:30<guilherme>ok, I understand. I always keep the system updated. I mainly use firefox and chromium. I guess I do not do anything too stupid, so I believe I am more or less ok. I will check this lynis and the other ideas you mentioned :) thanks a lot
15:30<annadane>i don't like the overeliance of github links to tackle debian problems
15:31<annadane>there's a reason repositories exist
15:31<MTTIT[m]>debian is linux
15:33<MTTIT[m]>on github links you can read about project, not blindly install some random package
15:34<annadane>true, but that wasn't explained
15:34<annadane>particularly if you're new to the linux ecosystem, it's not obvious that you shouldn't be installing 3rd party applications

20:28<annadane>i mean, if you have a 1 TB hard drive and you want to expand your linux partition it depends on what else is on the drive that you want
20:28<annadane>if you don't care then you can just use the whole thing but i don't know what your situation is
20:29<ryouma>15gb is plenty for me, but i don't use a full de
20:29<ryouma>i only use 6gb for debian
20:30<ryouma>and i don't even know where that came from. 4 was enough previously.
20:30<annadane>yeah it really doesn't take up a lot of space, even KDE doesn't which is the most resource intensive DE
20:30<ryouma>so if you don't use a de, do 20 to be conservative

20:37<cokeyflo>what a problems?
20:37<jmcnaught>if you use LVM (which is something that the debian-installer can configure for you) it's a lot easier to change sizes of volumes, and you get other features too like snapshots and raid

20:38<robdeb>Unfortunately, something that should be easy, seems to me almost impossible to be solved, as there is no clear support in the debian project for a simple wi-fi setup ....
20:38<jmcnaught>problems like /var filling up, which is silly if you didn't actually have a real reason for /var to be separate in the first place

20:40<robdeb>I will not try it again, I'll have to reinstall debian again. an absurd, but, that's life.....
20:40<jmcnaught>you don't need to reinstall debian
20:41<jmcnaught>but we can't really help you if you don't provide details
20:41<exedore6>In the old days, we did the partition thing to isloate things (like home and var) that grew, to not break everything (a log file or user filling up the volume breaking /tmp is a real problem). Quotas are a better way, and it’s easier to grow a partition. Additionally, we used the partitions to save space (for example, putting /usr on an NFS mountpoint for multiple workstations)
20:41<robdeb>but, how to fix this issue, jmcnaught ?
20:41<jmcnaught>robdeb: is your wifi a USB adapter, or built in?

20:46<cokeyflo>what u love?
20:46<exedore6>Analogy question - do you want a car with its transmission on the steering column, or the console.
20:47<exedore6>Personally, I prefer GDM, but my reasons are unsound and out of date. (I was mad at the libQT project back in the 90’s, and picked a side)
20:47<exedore6>Even though the issue I was mad about is a non-issue, and Gnome is a different project today.
20:48<ryouma>your analogy is confusing
20:48<exedore6>ryouma: Sorry, I thought it was a good one, as it’s a matter of personal preference. Is it the analogy, or the way I’m describing the different transmissions?

20:49<ryouma>or a console on a steering column
20:50<exedore6>ryouma: Oh, I was talking about the shifter. It’s usually either near the lights and wipers on the steering wheel, or between the driver and passenger.
