00:41<alexmex90>i am currently doing that, however if there is one set by default, why not providing it? in other installations I was asked to create one when the package is being configured, but not this time.
00:41<alexmex90>which is weird
00:43<jmcnaught>with the mysql packages you used to be able to change the mysql root password with dpkg-reconfigure, but i haven't used mariadb on stretch yet
00:44<alexmex90>yeah, mysql used to do that, but mariadb does not

02:21<AlexLikeRock>try boot other PC, just for test the boot
02:21<RoyK>AlexLikeRock: probably not a good answer - a USB device is pretty generic - anything should work, really
02:21<Svetlana>*try to
02:22<Drzacek>AlexLikeRock, it looks like my pc has problems with two of my usb sticks
02:22<RoyK>those things tend to die :P
02:22<Drzacek>it says it dd to it, but nothing changed, partition table, label, contents are just like before
02:22<Drzacek>RoyK, yeah, what got me confused is I tried 2
02:22<AlexLikeRock>yep, ..go to die
02:23<AlexLikeRock>use a NEW pendrive ;-)
02:24<Drzacek>and guess what, I rebooted and I can now access one of those two pendrives, it looks like it it dd'ing
02:24<Drzacek>earlier they were "write-protected" somehow
02:24<Drzacek>one still is
02:24<RoyK>Drzacek: you can use pv to see progress
02:24<Drzacek>anyone can explain, or should I just be happy it works now and forget it?
02:24<Drzacek>dd has status=progress flag
02:25<RoyK>when did that happen?
02:25<AlexLikeRock>"write-protected" that say , when they are all ready DIE
02:26<AlexLikeRock>can not write, because are BAD SECTOR
02:26<Drzacek>RoyK, I started my pc (okay, I lied, laptop) today, downloaded debian iso, pluged pendrive to usb port and try to dd. It wrote the image rather fast but I ignored that then

05:25<pgimeno>the zero comparison gave no non-zero bytes, does an all-zeros partition sector count as an old style partition table?
05:25<danielsh>btw, if you don't have 'od' you can try to install it with apt from the live disk. Or try with 'xxd', dd if=/dev/sda | xxd -a
05:25<pgimeno>xxd wasn't there either. I'll try apt.
05:26<danielsh>pgimeno, gdisk -l on an all-zero 1MB image http://sprunge.us/AIdM
05:27<pgimeno>apt-get isn't there either :/ neither is gdisk, only fdisk. Opening your link now.
05:28<danielsh>you can curl it, it's a texty pastebin
05:28<pgimeno>thanks, I'm in another box for these questions so it's easy to open. No, I got a three-line info. I can't copy/paste it because the computer is even in a different room.

When i switch from a computer to an other my hostname dynamically change(as far as you don't set it manually). You gave me an idea, gonna try something and i come back
10:13<pgimeno>Walex: iwconfig was really the only way I could find to make it work. Not sure if it's because my SSID is not published, but wpa_supplicant was not connecting until I used iwconfig ssid <ssidname>. When I did, wpa_supplicant immediately said it was found and connected successfully.

13:11<amacater>I suspect that the version in Sid is the updated version and you'll have to wait for it to trickle down or use the version from npm website.
13:11<astronouth7303>oh, that explains a lot
13:12<amacater>There was a package confilict node (ax25utils) and node (npm) - which was resolved by renaming node in Debian to nodejs. The ax25 amateur radio node tool may now hvae been released.
13:12<amacater>... removed ... so node in Debian will probably revert to meaing npm
13:12<bremner> yeah, but that was only about binary names
13:13<bremner>npm in unstable is still old, and maybe be removed too if it doesn't get updated
13:13*amacater HATES node and npm with a passion - too many small packages, too much messing around. Node ecosystem doesn't appear to play well with Linux distribution ecosystem and vice versa - node updates too often and incompatibly

22:08<guilherme>hi, I was using lynix to audit my system and it recommends to use separated partitions to /var and /log should I consider that? I am using a /home on a separated drive and a / on a ssd

22:14<jmcnaught>guilherme: one advantage to that can be that if your root filesystem gets full you're still getting log messages, however this is usually more advantageous on a server than on a desktop or laptop. The downside that we often see here is that the reverse happens, and someone's /var fills up and causes problems, despite having lots of free space on other volumes
22:15<jmcnaught>so i wouldn't do it until you have a really good reason to

22:22<guilherme>jmcnaught: Ok, I see. Just a correction lynix suggests /var and /temp. I have been reading and one advantage would be to have different file systems on those partitions and also security. The particularity here is that I could use my disk (instead of the ssd) and use a different file-system
22:24-!-awal1 [~awal1@154.242.5.171] has quit [Quit: Leaving]
22:24<jmcnaught>guilherme: i recommend using LVM if you want to do this, and to leave some space unallocated so that you can grow one of the volumes if it runs low on space

22:25<jmcnaught>alternatively what i'm looking at doing on my systems is all one big btrfs filesystem (possibly with subvolumes) allowing me to make a snapshot of the whole system at once (instead of needing to coordinate snapshots of multiple filesystems)
22:25<jmcnaught>you can also use LVM for snapshots
22:26<mnuhmnuh_>cpdev: $latest == "most problematic installation ever" in my humble ...
22:26<guilherme>jmcnaught: uhm , ok, but in that case I would have to format and start it from zero, right? I cannot do it from my ext4 partitions, right?
22:27<mnuhmnuh_>crap, this used to be a lot easier handle ..."
22:27<cpdev>mnuhmnuh_: lol still problematic
22:28<cpdev>had to switch to an old mac that is so crap it cant even run the latest version of osX and can barely make a bootable drive
22:28<mnuhmnuh_>cpdev: moving target, always.

22:30<jmcnaught>guilherme: you're going to have to repartition anyways to get /var and /tmp separate. If you want to do it flexibly, LVM with unallocated space will let you tweak it later
22:32<guilherme>jmcnaught: Yes, but I can resize the partition without formating it
22:33<cpdev>looks like im out of commission for a few days\
22:33<Guest189>have you tried gparted?

22:45<Arcade>cpdev, still having issues with the mirror not being found?
22:46<cpdev>arcade: piper suggested to get a new ISO, but the only PC i have atm is incabable of installing anything and my only other option is an old iMac that i tried and it can't seem to make a bootable drive
22:47<cpdev>im going to look and see what other options i have to fix this issue though. since i loved debian and all its functions when i tried it out in a virtual machine
22:49<Arcade>cpdev, you used dd for trying to create the bootable drive?

22:52<jmcnaught>guilherme: appendix c of the install manual discusses partition sizes but they seem awfully small to me

22:53<cpdev>as far as ive seen
22:53<guilherme>jmcnaugh: Ok, thank you very much!!!
22:53<Arcade>your basically restoring the iso to the flash drive
22:53<Arcade>my best guess like

22:54<Arcade>dd if=debian-9.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M; syn
22:54<cpdev>ill just use the command and see if itll work
22:54<Arcade>confirm your flash drive is sdb
22:54<cpdev>what does that mean and how do i confirm it?
22:54<Arcade>#diskutil list
22:55<cpdev>where would it say if it is sdb or not
22:56<Arcade>it would possibly be #/dev/diskx
22:56<cpdev>it shows up under /dev/disk1
22:57<cpdev>so that means it is sdb?
22:57<Arcade>Does the mac have a hard disk at all
