00:02<annadane>question about the package needrestart; when it says the system has outdated binaries what's the intended solution? i believe the message is - i don't have it in front of me - "relogin or restart" required, but of course needrestart also has a seperate line dealing with whether restarts are necessary or not

00:03<annadane>actually this is probably in the documentation somewhere
00:05<annadane>it's a really vague question but i just wonder whether the solution is always "service restart x"
00:05<annadane>(which sometimes doesn't work)

00:08<annadane>i think i'll actually ask this on a forum instead, because i want multiple points of view, so never mind

00:33<idontcarebear>Hi, I want to reinstall Debian. I have a separate home partition that I want to preserve. Will partioning with the installer destroy my original /home data?

00:34<annadane>you can set up the installer to not touch that partition; that said it recommends you have external backup
00:34<annadane>because there's an infinitesimally small chance that it will

00:37<annadane>i... think either works. but in the partitioning stage of the install you can select what partitions to write over and which to keep
00:37<annadane>there's actual documentation on this instead of my vague directions
00:37<annadane>let me just link you
00:39<annadane>https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch06s03.html.en#di-partition see sections 6.3.3.2 and 6.3.3.3 especially
00:40<annadane>i suppose also https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/apc.html.en
00:40<idontcarebear>Thank you very much! I spent a while searching and couldn't find anything that specifically answered my question.

00:40<annadane>but if you're just using the graphical installer - which i assumed and perhaps i shouldn't - you should be able to find it easily

12:03<badargo__>somiaj: im only unhappy when things dont work :(
12:04<somiaj>badargo__: if you want to stick with debian, #debian can help you figure out ways to get some newer software for specific apps (such as wine, I complie my own version if needed, though stretch-backports will provide newer versions sometimes as well.

14:33<annadane>badargo__, add contrib and non-free to your sources list, apt update, apt install firmware-realtek

14:39<badargo__>i give up :S

14:40<itd>badargo__: judd was asked to look for a file and did respond with: I found it. It is part of the package "firmware-realtek".
14:41<itd>badargo__: So, if you want that file you have to install the package judd mentioned.
14:41<annadane>which is in non free.
14:41<annadane>so you need to add that to your sources list
14:42<annadane>https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList
14:42<annadane>see "If you also want the contrib and non-free components, add contrib non-free after main" under "example sources.list"
14:42<badargo__>oh this judd is a bot
14:42<annadane>and do also add contrib because some non free stuff depends on it
14:42<annadane>and once you update your sources, type apt update in the terminal.
14:43<annadane>then you can install firmware-realtek

14:50-!-antgel [~topdog@82.166.98.41] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
14:50<badargo__>i have to add an address to the source list right?
14:50<annadane>well, you add contrib and non-free
14:51<annadane>which is just the words "contrib" and "non-free" after "main"
14:52<annadane>which as mentioned, you need to be root to edit your sources list. if you're using nano - so in the terminal, "nano etc/apt/sources.list" - you edit your sources and then press ctrl x to exit it, type y to save what you wrote, and enter to write the new sources list
14:52<annadane>it will tell you all this at the bottom of the screen
14:52<annadane>nano is just another text editor like vim or emacs but much simpler to use
14:53<annadane>ctrl x is just a nano convention, not all text editors are like that
14:53<annadane>(ctrl = control)
14:53<badargo__>there are 8 lines with the 'main" word, im using vim :P
14:53<badargo__>so i add contrib and non-free to all of them?

16:53<badargo___>also should i follow those strecht steps?
16:53<badargo___>this looks so complicated
16:54<sney>badargo___: if that was your lspci paste above, it looks like you have an intel+nvidia "optimus" setup, with the nvidia portion disabled. you may be able to turn on the nvidia gpu from the bios
16:54<badargo___>how?????
16:54<sney>but then you will need bumblebee, and support is still not very good. nvidia themselves have said officially that they do not want to support optimus for linux

16:55<sney>go to your laptop's setup menu at boot and look for video options to enable the nvidia gpu, you might get lucky

17:24<somiaj>dselect: hello
17:25<dselect>bonjour
17:25<sney>dselect: ftp.debian.org
17:25<dselect>ftp.debian.org is not the principal mirror for Debian. It is just one mirror that uses bandwidth that was donated to the Debian project; you are kindly requested not to use this mirror but to instead use a mirror that is closer to you, ask me about <mirrors>. See http://www.debian.org/mirror/ftpmirror#wherefrom for more information.
17:25<sney>I always forget about dselect.
17:26<EndZ>annadane: i changed that already
17:26<EndZ>now using for httpredir for all
17:26<somiaj>EndZ: that is outdated too
17:27<somiaj>dselect: deb.debian.org
17:27<dselect>deb.debian.org is a mirror network that is backed by international content delivery networks and for most users, this is the most reliable <mirror> to use in the <sources.list>. From Debian 9 "Stretch" onwards, apt queries SRV records in DNS which then send it off to a CDN. Older apt will get an HTTP redirect from deb.debian.org to the same CDNs. See http://deb.debian.org/ for more details.
