03:29<dpkg>#debian is primarily a support channel for Debian users. Please keep the discussions in #debian on-topic and take longer discussions and non-support questions to #debian-offtopic. Imagine the chaos if each of the hundreds of people in the channel felt the need to wander off topic for a few minutes every day.

11:55<fxb>Is there a way to reset software sources and keys to default debian repos?
11:55<amacater>Don't use Windows to create the bootable USB - use Xubuntu and dd - dd the image to the USB
11:55<amacater>If secure boot is turned on, you will need to set this to off.
11:56<RiberHus>never used dd.. I've built the Xubuntu USB stick with Rufus
11:56<amacater>... basically, don't EVER use Windows to create bootable media.
11:56<TobiX>fxb: What does "apt-key list" show?
11:56<RiberHus>works pretty good, imho
11:57<amacater>Plug in USB. Noet which device it is - dev/sdc or whatever.

11:58<TobiX>amacater: What is wrong with creating bootable media in Windows? The Debian handbook even describes how to create install media on Windows...
11:59<RiberHus>amacater: okay, thanks for the tips. I'll try that later on and will give some feedback
11:59*mnuhmnuh "cp blah.iso /dev/sdN" works just as good.
11:59<TobiX>fxb: Doesn't look broken... Does /etc/apt/trusted.gpg exist? Maybe remove it, to fix key problems...
12:00<amacater>It does describe how to do it in Windows - then you find that someone has messed it up somehow and you can't sort it out. Rufus / Unetbootin and so on are recipes for "hard to sort out" errors
12:00<amacater>If you have a Linux system to use, use the Linux system ?
12:01<fxb>TobiX, it exists but it's not encoded in human readable format if that makes any difference
12:01<petn-randall>amacater: rufus/unetbootin are not recommended in the handbook. wind32diskimager works reliably, though.
12:02<amacater>RiberHus - oh, btw, that wipes out previous content of the USB medium - you can reformat it afterwards. Also DO CHECK that you're writing to the correct disk, twice if ncecessary
12:02<TobiX>fxb: Yeah, it should contain PGP keys for extra sources in binary format, I suspect it may be broken, maybe move it out of the way
12:02<RiberHus>tbh I've used Rufus 10+ to create Xubuntu USB sticks
12:02<RiberHus>s/10+/10+ times
12:04<amacater>Fair enough :) As ever, your mileage may vary - I would second the use of the expert install under Debian where you've got other partitions and so on there - it asks you all of the low priority questions and gives a little more control
12:05<RiberHus>btw, is Startup Disk Creator good?
12:05<fxb>TobiX, thanks, i'm holding on just a little bit before doing that (i suspect i would need to reboot or restart some service to apply changes) because someone over on #debian freenode finally answered me with more questions :)

13:25<proctrap>I've also swap even with 12 gig
13:26<amacater>A swapfile or swap partition - maybe - proctrap has it right - being able to swap to / from disk is a good thing when you're out of memory
13:26<RiberHus>TobiX: it's my personal computer. it works about 10h/day.. but as I'm not very familiarised with Linux, I decided to create the swap partition
13:27<amacater>Xubuntu and Ubuntu commands are similar as they are based on Debian - apt-get should work for all
13:27<TobiX>You can also just use a swap file...
13:27<RiberHus>I guess I'll go along with a 4Gb swap partition
13:27<RiberHus>just in case
13:27<RiberHus>:)
13:27<TobiX>I think Ubunutu switched to swap files for the latest release

22:20<k-man>in the "bridge-utils modifications" section, its not clear to me what the two lines that are pasted into your /etc/network/interfaces does
22:21<k-man>pre-up iwconfig wlan0 essid $YOUR_ESSID is that setting the essid that you are supposed to be connecting to?
22:21<k-man>and bridge_hw $MAC_ADDRESS_OF_YOUR_WIRELESS_CARD is bridge_hw an option you can specify in interfaces? I can't see it documented in man interfaces

22:29<mnuhmnuh>ebtables?!? jeebus.
22:31<k-man>mnuhmnuh, that's apparently what you need to do to bridge a wifi network
22:31<mnuhmnuh>operates at the MAC layer rather than the IP layer
22:33<k-man>yep
22:33<k-man>which is is required for bridging a wifi interface
22:36*mnuhmnuh yearns wisfully for those days it slurped down ca. 40 1.44 mb floppies from tsx-11.mit.edu to get slackware
22:37*mnuhmnuh took days.

22:44<jmcnaught>k-man: do the VMs need to be accessible by other computers on the network, or do they just need internet access?
22:45<k-man>jmcnaught, i'd prefer the former, but could live with the latter
22:45<k-man>jmcnaught, but the problem is, we use a 10.0.x.x at work for our NAT network. and in my experience, the VM NAT tends to want to use the same network and that causes issues too
22:46<jmcnaught>k-man: if you use the default network configured by libvirt it uses 192.168.122.1/24 but it's also configurable. The host computer will be able to talk to the VMs as well.
22:47<k-man>hmmm ok
22:47<k-man>maybe i'll try that then
22:48<DarkPi>Message from daphne@raspberrypi on pts/2 at 20:45
22:48<jmcnaught>also thought i'd mention that the new nftables available in stretch that replaces iptables, it also is a replacement for ebtables (a unified system) but you'd have to learn how to use it.
22:48<DarkPi>how could this show up but when i run w that session doesnt show up

22:54<dpkg>Raspbian is a distribution <based on Debian> made specifically for the <Raspberry Pi>. Raspbian is not Debian and it is not supported in #debian. Please use #raspbian on irc.freenode.net for support. http://www.raspbian.org/
