05:01<digitalboy>Hi guys, whenever I start my box (Debian Stretch) with no ethernet cable attached and then I connect one Debian can't reach the "outer" network (8.8.8.8) but can, for example, reach my router (192.168.0.1) why is it so? My /etc/network/interfaces is pretty much unchanged from the installation phase (allow-hotplug enp0s25/iface enp0s25 inet dhcp)
05:02<digitalboy>On the contrary if I start the box with a network cable attached I'm able to reach Google with no problems..
05:03<digitalboy>Then after some time, say 5 minutes more or less, it seems that Debian is again able to reach the Internet
05:03<digitalboy>Do you have any clue why this is happening?

05:12<digitalboy>duclicsic I've simply run a $ ping -c 1000 8.8.8.8 to see if/when the access to the Internet was "automatically" restored

05:15<digitalboy>The "strange" thing is that if I disconnect the Ethernet cable from a box booted with a network cable and then I proceed to reattach it, the box seems to regain access to the Internet pretty quickly (in seconds)

07:20<Aldryic>sensors | grep temp | sed 's/crit.*$//;s/^.*+//;s/°.*$//' | sed 's/\\n/\t/g'
07:20<Aldryic>Try that

14:56<annadane>mva11, you need the package firmware-realtek. you'll need to add contrib and non-free to your sources list. as root (which you likely should still be signed on as after using dmesg), type nano /etc/apt/sources.list and next to where it says "main", add the words "contrib" and "non-free". then type control x, it will ask you if you want to save the buffer, type y, and then it will say "save file as...", just press enter.
14:56<annadane>then type apt install firmware-realtek. you'll need to reboot after that

19:37<jmcnaught>Maarten_: I don't have a lot of experience with overlay filesystems like this. The kernel documentation for filesystems is usually worth reading: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/filesystems/overlayfs.txt also you *could* try poking at Docker to figure out how it works (it uses overlays to build images)

19:58<jmcnaught>Maarten_: I still recommend looking at btrfs, especially for its concept of default subvolume and snapshots. There's some integration with other tools, for example "systemd-nspawn -D / -xb" boots an ephemeral snapshot of the host system in a container
20:00<jmcnaught>Maarten_: I set up a couple of free to use computers for a resource room in a community centre that 'immutable'. They run Debian, but on boot they launch a Windows VM in fullscreen. Everytime the physical computer boots it resets the Windows VM's virtual disk back to an original snapshot.
