00:15<lulu>Hi
00:15<lulu>I have a problem with wi-fi driver installation
00:20<rjsalts>lulu: you'll have to provide more information if you're wanting help. Things like: How did you try to install? What does it do? What hardware you have? Maybe provide relevant Error messages, or ask how to find them.
00:21<annadane>it's usually a case of missing firmware

00:21<annadane>i don't know what your problem is but you can try, as root, dmesg | grep firmware and give us the output to paste.debian.net
00:21<lulu>it is what I'm trying now, but commands are doesn't work
00:22<annadane>lulu, i'd recommend against installing from github; what you need is probably in the repository

00:26<annadane>lulu, as i said can you give the output of dmesg | grep firmware?
00:27<lulu>https://paste.debian.net/984321/
00:27<lulu>here it is
00:28<rjsalts>install the realtek firmware package and you might not have to compile the thing from github
00:29<lulu>how to install that?
00:29<annadane>add contrib and non-free to the lines in your sources list, apt update, apt install firmware-realtek
00:30<annadane>https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList see "example sources list"

00:33<annadane>lulu, https://wiki.debian.org/Steam
00:34<annadane>it says "for jessie and sid only" but pretty sure it applies to stretch too
00:35<lulu>my system is debian 9
00:35<lulu>it is ok?
00:35<annadane>debian 9 is stretch. it's probably ok, yes

01:03<annadane>lulu, this may be an answer for you https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=851066#53
01:03<judd>Bug http://bugs.debian.org/851066 in flashplugin-nonfree (open, security): «flashplugin-nonfree: Mismatch between detected and available versions (Download file not available at people.debian.org)»; severity: grave; opened: 2017-01-11; last modified: 2017-08-21.
01:03<annadane>the reason that flash is an issue is because there was a bug but the above links to a solution which other people have said works
01:04<lulu>I have a fatal problem with login screen, after grub it only showing me black screen, but after input password, debian system working correctly.
01:04<annadane>i'm sorry if that's a bit advanced, but i can't find a clear answer anywhere else
01:05<annadane>lulu, does it give you a login prompt?
01:05<lulu>login prompt?
01:05<annadane>because you say you enter your password
01:06<lulu>I don't know, but I entered my password while it showing me black screen, I can login my system

01:07<lulu>I'm using LG TV through HDMI cable
01:08<lulu>and... I don't have any monitor...
01:08<annadane>ah, but you can at least access your system if you enter your password, that's good
01:08<lulu>but I wanna see my login screen TT
01:08<annadane>it means it's a problem but at least you can work around it for now
01:08<lulu>yes
01:08<annadane>well, i don't know what could be the cause of that
01:10<lulu>someone gave me an advice here yesterday(I remember installing something and reboot), it worked yesterday and I could see the login screen, but it showing me black screen again today
01:11<annadane>lulu, can you give us the output of "cat /var/log/apt/history.log" to paste.debian.net?

01:16<annadane>likely the 3rd then, let me look at the log...
01:17<annadane>lulu, if you don't remember what it was you installed can you maybe give a general idea?

01:34<lulu>Is it safe?
01:34<annadane>i'm not sure what minergate is...
01:34<annadane>ah, cryptocurrency
01:34<lulu>https://minergate.com/downloads/gui
01:34<lulu>yes
01:35<annadane>lulu, not from that website because they're .debs packaged for ubuntu which is a big no-no
01:36<lulu>oh

01:36-!-leosilva is "leosilva" on #debian
01:36<lulu>so I can not use that software on Debian, right?
01:37<annadane>they may have standalone clients but the problem is as i said with installing things like that is that 1) it's packaged for ubuntu which you shouldn't install on a debian system and 2) you shouldn't download .deb files from the internet anyway, that's the point of having a secure repository
01:37<annadane>if it were just a standalone client which didn't require installation you may be able to use it; i'm not too familiar with minergate
01:38<lulu>I got it

01:39-!-rkta [~kt@p5DE85244.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
01:40<annadane>lulu, i'm not sure about pidgin; going from https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins#UnixLinux and if you're following those instructions you'd be putting it into your home folder which is generally safe
01:40<annadane>it's certainly better than installing random .deb files
01:41<annadane>and by the way, you should know that . prefaces a hidden file, as in the case of .purple on that page
01:41<lulu>deb http://debian.altrepo.eu/ code_name main it is safe?
01:42<annadane>lulu, you mean as an entry in your sources list? i'm not completely familiar with that site; in general i advise against people using repositories that aren't specifically from the debian project
01:42<annadane>i know some people do use them but to me it's a security risk

14:04<cruncher>and a lot more. Just take a look at man ip
14:04<TobiX>cruncher: That's not really true. ifupdown is not deprecated
14:05<Stereo>cruncher: you're sure we're not talking about different things?
14:05<cruncher>i didnt say that
14:05<TobiX>And ip is certainly no replacement for ifupdown
14:05<cruncher>TobiX,
14:05<Stereo>Maybe I'm upgrading it wrong. Running dist-upgrade right away before upgrade seems to keep ifupdown.

22:17<annadane>!ubuntu
22:17<dpkg>Ubuntu is based on Debian, but it is not Debian. Only Debian is supported on #debian. Use #ubuntu on chat.freenode.net instead. Even if the channel happens to be less helpful, support for distributions other than Debian is offtopic on #debian. See also <based on debian> and <ubuntuirc>.
22:19<User_>sorry :p
22:20<somiaj>User_: if using debian, it is most likely you need to install the non-free firmware for that card.
22:22<blast007>!b43
22:22<dpkg>b43 is a Linux kernel driver supporting PCI/PCIe wireless LAN devices with Broadcom chips. Firmware is required, ask me about <b43-fwcutter> to provide. http://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx #bcm-users on irc.freenode.net. For BCM4313/43224/43225 device support, ask me about <brcmsmac>. For support of the BCM4306 rev 2 and 802.11b-only devices, ask me about <b43legacy>.
