08:02<itd>kblin: What is "the whole dev env"?
08:03<kblin>gcc, all the -dev packages "apt-get build-dep python3" pulls in
08:04<Edhil>kblin: as python 3.6 is only packaged in "experimental", I doubt you can do without compiling
08:04<kblin>so basically, I'd like to get a new python on this machine, but I don\t want to compile it on that machine
08:05<kblin>durn
08:05<itd>judd versions python3.6
08:05<judd>Package: python3.6 on amd64 -- buster: 3.6.2-2; sid: 3.6.2-5
08:05<kblin>in the end, I'll need 3.6 on a handful of machines, not just one. I really don't want to manually compile it everywhere
08:06<grawity>build a .deb and install it everywhere
08:06<Edhil>well you can try to rebuild the sid package for jessie
08:06<itd>kblin: Backport it once and then distribute the resulting deb. You can remove the build-dep once you compiled it.

08:07<kblin>sure, but if I built the experimental version, wouldn't it conflict with the 3.4 version already on the system?

14:35<guardian>Hello again. Does the following ring a bell by chance? I upgraded a Wheezy box. Wheezy -> Jessie -> Stretch. Here is my /etc/logrotate.d/nginx file: http://paste.debian.net/987002/ -- When it was Wheezy, I would receive for each rotate log. The email title was e.g. /home/guardian/.../...access.log and the email body contained the log in plaintext
14:36<guardian>Now that I upgraded to Stretch, the email title is /home/guardian/.../...access.log.366.gz and the email body is all "scrambled"
14:36<guardian>I'm running out of ideas to figure out what changed

15:34<dboles>i don't think installing an MS product will cause any problems (other than philosophical ones!)
15:34<somiaj>rob_debian: the skype for linux new deb should work fine. I haven't heard if it does or not, but if you have to use skype, that is your choice.

15:35<somiaj>rob_debian: it won't cause any major issue with debian, if it is installable (which I suspect that the depends will work in stretch due to the date of the package) then you can just use it. Not it offically isn't supported by us, and outside of the license agreement with microsoft, it will install/run on linux just fine.
15:35<somiaj>I was thinking about the old 4.3 deb, that one is old and I woudln't suggest using, but seems they have made a new deb, so if you are needing to use skype, that is the only (and best) option it seems to use skype on debian.
15:36<somiaj>part of this depends on who you chat with and what they use, it might be easier for you to use skype than to change other people you talk with to use some open source video/chat solution.
15:36<rob_debian>fine somiaj, but, please, I didn't understand your explanation here: 'I would hav eto double check it worked in stretch'...

15:36<rob_debian>hi dboles ! thanks for information ! :) nice to meet you and somiaj again !
15:37<somiaj>rob_debian: I have not tried this new deb, or do I know for sure that it is installable in stretch. I think it is just fine from looking at it, but I am not going to double check depends and test it.
15:37<rob_debian>oh, I see...
15:37<somiaj>rob_debian: dpkg -i skypeforlinux.deb and after that fails, run apt-get -f install. That will fix it, or remove it, depending on if it is instalalble in stretch.
15:38<rob_debian>at first I thought about 'ekiga', for it's stable binary package available in official debian repository, but don't have much time to learn how to use it..
15:38<somiaj>.debs are nice that provided it dosen't have mallicous info (I trust ms on this front) it is fine to try to install it. If you can't meet the depends the worst you will do is remove the package.
15:38<rob_debian>yes, somiaj, I know this procedure using dkpg -i, really thanks.
15:39<somiaj>rob_debian: and you may have to get others to switch. So even if you used ekiga, you would have to get those who you talk to, to use it as well. Might just be easier to use the non-free software from ms.
15:39<somiaj>and since they have updated their linux package, if I had to use skype, that is what I would do.

23:56<elof_>will I have security problems if I use gnome2 ?
23:57<elof_>because gnome stopped its support?
