01:21<ni431>i'm more wondering, how would I tell if it's a issue in hardware
01:22<jm_>I don't know, maybe ask on lkml -- I think over the years the linux kernel was changed to mimic what windows does
01:23<ni431>is lkml a irc server?
01:25<rjsalts>mailing list
01:26<jm_>!lkml
01:26<dpkg>i heard lkml is the Linux Kernel Mailing List. Read http://web.archive.org/web/20110721110318/http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/docs/lkml/reporting-bugs.html before you post there and ALSO read http://www.tux.org/lkml/
01:30<sney>"how would I tell if it's a hardware issue" mostly boils down to a) running extensive memory/disk tests on your hw and 2) putting your / drive in another machine
01:30<sney>#2 is variable depending on what initrd choice you made in the install but either way unmeasurably easier than windows
01:31<gtristan>Hrrrrrmmmmmm
01:31<gtristan>Sorry for that... Question: Is it normal for packages to disappear and be replaced with differently named ones ?
01:31<sney>sometimes
01:31<sney>there is a Replaces: field
01:32<gtristan>Context: I have a script which generates a base runtime using multistrap, generating 32 & 64bit runtimes for arm & intel arches
01:32<gtristan>And things start to break, not everything has nicely symbolic names
01:32*gtristan not sure how to handle this properly
01:33<sney>IME packages withe Replaces have a compatibility symlink or s

01:34*gtristan is currently missing libgles1-mesa-dev in testing, but I think that is because testing changed from stretch to something new
01:35<jm_>!why is libgles1-mesa-dev not in testing
01:35<dpkg>libgles1-mesa-dev is not in testing for the reasons listed in https://qa.debian.org/excuses.php?package=libgles1-mesa-dev
01:35<gtristan>But then with stable, I'm missing libgmime-3.0-dev
01:35<gtristan>nice bot
01:35<sney>this early in testing you expect things to be broken, so ok
01:35<jm_>shows it just fine as being in testing

01:36<jm_>,versions libgles1-mesa-dev
01:36<judd>Package: libgles1-mesa-dev on amd64 -- wheezy: 8.0.5-4+deb7u2; wheezy-security: 8.0.5-4+deb7u2; jessie: 10.3.2-1+deb8u1; jessie-backports: 13.0.6-1~bpo8+1; stretch: 13.0.6-1+b2
01:36<jm_>ahh no it doesn't, only sid
01:36<annadane>doesn't say sid either...
01:36<gtristan>Now we've been using stretch for a long time... so I thought it might be fine to use stable; but unfortunately... now we want cargo (rust) :-/
01:37<gtristan>(I know... that part is totally my problem haha)
01:37<jm_>not here, but p.d.o does
01:37<jm_>so that web page does not work then
01:37<sney>gtristan: at this point in the dev cycle, for prod, it's usually smarter to just run stable and put your extra stuff in /usr/local or /opt or whatever because testing is nowhere near ready for prime time.
01:38<jm_>even in sid it has a very old version for arm64 so that shows there are issues
01:39<jm_>maybe package names also changed, i.e. maybe one of these applies to testing instead: https://packages.debian.org/source/testing/mesa
01:39<gtristan>sney, Ok so... to be frank; we really get the value from testing, not stable :D
01:39<jm_>probably better to ask in #debian-next for help with testing
01:40<gtristan>So I'm better off trying to get the GLES1 header files from somewhere, and deal with having to change package names sometimes
01:40<sney>gtristan: no, because the value is having a solid platform to build your shit on. newish languages take a while to get "stable" by anyone's definition. and any *nix will play nice with 3rd party stuff in either aforementioned location
01:40<gtristan>sney, i.e.; we want to build next generation desktop stuff - and using a revisioned output of multistrap on multiple arches gives us something *really* practical
01:40<gtristan>i.e. it's not prod :)
01:41<gtristan>we yank a really nice runtime, commit it to an ostree repository so that all developers have an "exactly the same" base runtime
01:41<sney>better to build on current stable, and then upgrade your docker images or whatever to next-stable when that happens. everything is in flux until then. do you like moving your goalposts every time -dev changes their minds? no?
01:42<gtristan>It doesnt have to be stable and work, but it provides all the bleeding edge system dependencies we need
01:42<gtristan>sney, I prefer to have the rust toolchain because now some of our modules are starting to require it ?
01:42<gtristan>sney, can I have that in stable ?
01:43<gtristan>then yeah; I'd totally just use stable
01:43<sney>see earlier ramblings about putting things in /otp
01:43<sney>/opt even
01:43<sney>!fhs
01:43<dpkg>Debian follows the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard. The filesystem is categorized by purpose, not application. This allows, for example, the easy and efficient deployment of a read-only /usr area across a number of thin clients. See http://www.pathname.com/fhs/ or install the 'debian-policy' package (/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs/*), or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard, or "man hier".
01:44<gtristan>Mkay, then yeah; to be honest I prefer moving goal posts
01:44<gtristan>if it means I have to rename some packages in my multistrap.conf sometimes, and some deps will be changing a bit... we at least control when we re-pull from multistrap
01:45<gtristan>that's not a big deal for us I think, it's less hassle than build it ourselves, and expect tooling to exist in /opt

03:04<Matte>First of all sorry for possibly awkward terminology but I'm a Windows guy that only started reallt branching out into the Linuxes recently. Having a bit of an issue on a minor distribution based on Debian 7, because getting packages (with apt-get) only works on two "sources" provided by the distributor which only have a handful. If I try adding the proper Debian 7 repositories when it goes...
03:04<Matte>...to update it "splices" the nickname of its distribution into the url and obviously goes on a 404.
03:04<Matte>So if in my sources file I have "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib non-free" when I do an apt-get update it becomes, for example "Failed to fetch http://deb.debian.org/debian/[Nickname of distribution]/wheezy-updates/non-free/binary-amd64/Packages"
03:04<Matte>Any way I can force it to not corrupt the url like that?
03:04<Matte>I managed to manually install packages but I have to point to the .deb files manually like that and it doesn't handle dependencies manually that way, making it a rather big pain to track down and install dozens of dependency packages...

03:07<dpkg>Your distribution may be based on and have software in common with Debian, but it is not Debian. 04:10<annadane>FLD, hard to know without more info, but mysql was changed in stretch to mariadb
04:10<gtristan>Sooo, the plan is to completely drop that API and force any depending software to use a newer API-incompatible GLES ?
04:10<gtristan>That doesnt sound sane
04:10<annadane>and, yeah, i might have guessed that before
04:11<FLD>annadane: yeah, i'll just upgrade to stretch today :P

04:15<gtristan>Ok so, I'm pretty sure I had GLES (not to be confused with GLES2/GLES2, provided by libgles2-mesa-dev, which I *also* had) for a reason, but lets try to build todays GNOME master branches without it, and see what happens
04:15<stevenm_>ignore me - its *doesn't* work - its just looks like it does :) as the default thing mariadb does is make a root user with unix auth :P
04:16<annadane>gtristan, aptitude why gles?
04:16<annadane>or whatever it's called
04:16<gtristan>annadane, I'm not sure what that would tell me... to be clear, it's source code that depends on the base runtime I'm generating with multistrap, not debian packages
04:16<annadane>ah, okay
04:17<gtristan>annadane, actually it's a pretty neat project; and I think debian benefits by this too
04:17<gtristan>annadane, consider that, if upstream GNOME developers are building and testing against a bleeding edge debian generated runtime, it means we do CI against something that more closely matches what you guys are going to release
04:18<gtristan>So, it would be interesting to do it for other distros too, and have a CI server ensuring GNOME dev releases always build against "next" distros

15:26<jhutchins>!uuid
15:26<dpkg>A Universally Unique IDentifier (UUID) is used to reference disk partitions (among other things). See currently known partition UUIDs with 'blkid'. In /etc/fstab, use "UUID=dead-beef-0420-etc" as the partition name. UUIDs help to cope with device name changes such as hda->sda (<libata> transition) or changes in USB disk order discovery. <LVM> tools accept PV/VG/LV UUIDs as arguments, use {pv,vg,lv}display to acquire.
15:27<nev3rkill>I tried blkid , ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid and other methods, and the UUID is missing
15:28<nev3rkill>I had to remove the fstab lines becouse the uuids disapeared after the dist-upgrade, now i'm using /dev/sda1, etc
15:28<nev3rkill>in the fstab
15:29<nev3rkill>and the fact that even forcing a new uuid via tune2fs -U random /dev/sda1 , the uuid of that partition keeps missing, it-s so weird

15:35<itd>ztealmax: Why do you want to do that?
15:35<itd>dpkg: pinning
15:35<dpkg>Pinning is a method to choose which version of a package to install when multiple versions are available from <sources.list>. Bugs are explained at https://web.archive.org/web/20121017070250/http://carlo17.home.xs4all.nl/howto/debian.html#errata . If you use stable, pinning won't help you from messing up the system, ask me about <backports> instead. https://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences
15:35<jhutchins>nev3rkill: Ok, I'll grant that.
15:35<blast007>nev3rkill: so what's different about sda/sdb and sdc?
15:36<jhutchins>ztealmax: Yea, I know about pinning, it's an archaic holdover from before backports became reliable that was used for mixing releases - something that is NOT recommended with current releases.
15:36<nev3rkill>blast007: none
15:36<jhutchins>ztealmax: Whatever you're trying to do, pinning is almost certainly part of the wrong way to do it.
15:37<nev3rkill>sdc has / and all the system folders, but even sdc has sdc10 that is a partition similar to sda1
