04:58<gtristan>Unfortunately the only instructions I find involve building cpython myself (https://docs.python.org/devguide/gdb.html)
04:59<gtristan>Question is, does debian provide this python-gdb.py thing anywhere ?

07:42<tt>right, because you don't actually have it installed
07:42<tt>I'm not sure how to make that kind of alias, have never wanted it.
07:42<tt>easiest thing if you want to be able to use Arial as a font in documents, is install Arial.
07:42*grummund believes it is installed - fonts-liberation is already the newest version.
07:43<tt>Arial is not installed; your system is configured to use Liberation Sans when an application requests Arial, but when your system requests 'list of installed fonts' it isn't included since it isn't installed.
07:44<grummund>ok, i get that :)
07:44<grummund>so can it be aliased to appear in the list under another name, or do i need to install non-free package?
07:45<tt>do you need to be able to write documents in Arial font for others or something?
07:45<tt>there's some config specific to that in libreoffice, iirc
07:46<grummund>the reason being is for sharing documents with others (those poor microsoft only people)

07:46<tt>it may also be possible to work everything out w/o installing it
07:47<tt>like if you're having moral qualms about non-free :)
07:47<grummund>i do.

15:20<jhutchins>not_newbie: Intermitents being such fun to troubleshoot.
15:20<jhutchins>not_newbie: It's fairly likely you have a process that's hanging occasionally, and when you try to reboot after that happens it gets stuck.
15:20<jhutchins>not_newbie: Have you tried pressing Ctl-C when it hangs?
15:21<jhutchins>not_newbie: You can also try messing with SysRq. I've never learned that.
15:21<not_newbie>well I have tried sysrq
15:21<not_newbie>it's a off and on thing
15:22<not_newbie>like sometimes on the hang it will pick up some keyboard press, but other times nothing
15:22<not_newbie>sometimes it responds to ctrl alt f1
15:22<not_newbie>but you can't enter any input
15:22<not_newbie>I believe I have tried ctrl-C
15:22<somiaj>reboot/shutdown happens in oposite order of boot, so one usually uses their shell/input access quite quickly.
15:24<not_newbie>well i am using reboot not shutdown
15:24<somiaj>I think there are ways to make systemd more verbose about this. You could also enable persistant journal (I think you just need to create the dirctory /var/log/journal and then you can look at systemd's logs to see what was hanging.

15:25<not_newbie>yeah, that's what I have taken from everything I have read

15:26<not_newbie>and yes your right about creating a dictory in /var/log/journal for rebooting, gotta read that journalctl api or you will lose your previous data
15:27<somiaj>debian is set up to use 'auto', where if that directory exists it will save it, if not it won't. So that is nice, just have to create that directory and let systemd take over
15:29<not_newbie>okay, I didn't know the auto part, but I did set it up so that it will log
15:29<somiaj>that is just a setting debian has by default, the short version is 'mkdir /var/log/journal' and you should have a persistant journal.
15:33<not_newbie>alright, so is there anything i can do to help make sure nothing hanging on my end?

15:35<somiaj>sytemd tries to nicely shut everything down. Some processes take a while to nicely shut down, systemd can then be configured to wait for it to nicely shutdown, or have a timeout which forcefully shuts it down if it takes to long. Some process you don't want to have a timeout on, like a backup process, your backup process better complete in full before shutting down for example.

16:11<Luticus>I asked this question the other day and didn't get any answer so i thought i'd try again and see if i had any better luck today: I have a laptop running Debian Stretch and I want to auto mount remote file systems on my network, both cifs and nfs. I have tried the following methods: fstab, autofs, pammount and systemd. They all work but there are issues with each of them. The biggest is that being a laptop it doesn't stay connected to the same netwo
16:11<Luticus>rk, thus when removed from the network the desktop/file manager tends to hang due to the mounted file systems being no longer available. The second problem is that for the cifs mount the username/password has to be stored in plain text, which is awful. Does anyone have any better mount methods that might help with these problems?
