08:58<mnuhmnuh>crickets ...
08:58<mirav>Is there a mechanism to customise the default configuration of debian packages without 'manually' running scripts?
08:59<abrotman>mirav: you mean pre-answering the questoins that the packages ask upon installation?
08:59<mnuhmnuh>mirav: i tweak /etc/default/*, then stumble around.
08:59<mirav>abrotman: Think more like reconfiguring vim
09:00<abrotman>mirav: which command are you using to reconfigure vim?
09:00<mirav>I can't think of much other than having a provisioning script or using a custom APT repo
09:00<mirav>vi /etc/vim/vimrc
09:01<abrotman>mirav: So you're looking for something like configuration management

09:04<mirav>the problem with config mgmt is, let's say I have multiple PCs which I need to control too - that's where I start to think APT repo would make more sense because changes will be pulled regularly, rather than depend on my having access

09:06<mnuhmnuh>mirav: do you learn the tree from roots up, or branches & leaves down?
09:06<abrotman>mnuhmnuh: seriously, please stop pretending you're being helpful
09:06<mirav>^
09:06<abrotman>mirav: you could also keep those files in git or similar
09:08<mirav>abrotman: Hmm thanks, it should be possible to use Puppet or Ansible to achieve a regular pull which would work
09:08<abrotman>mirav: I will say that if you're going to mix versions of Linux, the different distros may keep files in different places or formats. That may complicate using git
09:08<abrotman>mirav: not sure if you think Ansible/Puppet are overkill, but worth a shot if that's what you really want

09:11<mirav>mirav: with change mgmt it seems I either leaving an account on all the machines with sudo privs which I push to regularly, or I check for updates locally and uses ansible to pull changes - the latter reduces load on both sides so I might look into that

13:26<JTech>somiaj, no. I'm running these commands from Debian, trying to see a Xubuntu installer ISO in the GRUB2 menu.
13:26<somiaj>oh this issue again, really you should be asking xubuntu support for how to get grub to boot their .iso from a drive.
13:26<JTech>somiaj, but I'm using Debian
13:26<somiaj>we don't know how xubuntu's .iso are built and what sort of things you need to get them to chain boot through grub.
13:27<JTech>It's Debian's files and Debian's commands I have to do all this with
13:27<somiaj>the grub stuff is fairly common in both, the real issue is making surey ou have the correct .iso and tell grub to chain boot it correctly, and debian does not know how xubuntu makes it's .iso's
13:28<somiaj>so sure we can say hey here is how grub is handeled in debian, but in the end without knowing how to chain boot xubuntus .iso we can't really give more advise than we have.
13:28<JTech>like for example do I still make a /boot/grml folder to make a GRUB2 Menuentry or is it different for Debian?

13:29<somiaj>the debian way is to put the desired scripts in /etc/grub.d/ to generate the boot info and then run update-grub as you have been directed at already.
13:29<somiaj>for what you have to put in that script, you need to ensure that this .iso can correctly be chain booted from grub and what additional paramaters it may need.

15:46<keycollector>Would i have any benefit to creating a RAM Disk and installing KVM onto it? Would the VMs perform better?
15:47<grawity>no
15:47<keycollector>short reasoning? :)
15:47<grawity>"KVM", as in the software, is really not massive
15:48<DusXMT>keycollector: It'll be loaded in memory when you run it :)
15:48<grawity>part of it is the kernel (always in RAM), the rest is qemu (also in RAM because it's too active to get paged out)
15:48<TobiX>It's just a 2MB binary...
15:48<DusXMT>The only difference would be that it would start faster, _but_, you'd have to populate the ramdisk with it first, so, it's kinda pointess :)
15:49<DusXMT>(slowing down your boot in exchange for a faster startup of one thing)
15:49<keycollector>Makes good sense, thanks for all the info.

16:52<ObviouslyANoob>Unrelated: The issue previously described here https://paste.debian.net/1004930/ has been mostly solved; By moving the swap volume into the root volume group which is unlocked first, the system finds it at boot and starts much faster. Thanks everyone.

16:53<DusXMT>JTech: The boot process isn't that hard. Personally, the way I'd do it is to make use of the fact that debian derivatives keep symlinks to the newest kernel and initrd, and add into /etc/grub.d/40_custon a menuentry for it, making use of those files, /initrd.img and /vmlinuz
16:53<JTech>I don't even know how to manually update Debian... do I just set it to check for updates daily and hope it checks for updates immediately after I change that setting?

17:24<Hydroxide>JTech: you can update from one major version to the next if you don't skip any major versions and you follow the instructions in the new version's release notes. however we don't prevent people from continuing to use old vversions.
17:26<Hydroxide>JTech: as duncan said, wheezy continues to receive a limited level of support for certain important packages through May 2018, by people who are paid for their time through donated specifically targeted at LTS. it's less well supported than either debian 8 or 9, but not zero.
17:26<Hydroxide>JTech: if a wheezy user wants to upgrade to debian 9, they can follow the debian 8 release notes to upgrade to debian 8, and then the debian 9 release notes to upgrade to debian 9.
17:26<Hydroxide>or reinstall, of course, if they prefer.

18:20<Hydroxide>in the specific case of vim, you probably don't need an interactive text editor tool within the image, and if you do, vim-tiny minus /usr/share/doc (or nvi) will be reasonably decent for that use case.
18:20<VLetrmx>Hydroxide, yeah it's not exactly debian based, I pretty much bind mount some parts of the host in, but not /etc (I can't), so I currently just manually create the symlinks
18:21<Hydroxide>VLetrmx: maybe you can bind mount /etc/alternatives, or make a new /etc/alternatives that the symlinks live in? anyway I think there are tools for regenerating the symlinks. look up update-alternatives and check out the alternatives system on the debian wiki

21:33<somiaj>your first output said it maybe held packages, do you have any pinning or held packages on your system. I also notice what looks like a thrid party repo, microsoft vscode, and just labeled as stable, wonder if packages from that repo could be causing dependency conflicts in the upgrade.
21:34<themill>The last box I upgraded that had kde on it went a lot like this. It was a serious PITA.

21:36<zeratul976>somiaj: i don't have anything in /etc/apt/preferences, and /etc/apt/preferences.d is empty, so i assume no pinning
21:36<zeratul976>somiaj: "dpkg --get-selections | grep 'hold$'" is also empty, so i assume no held packages
21:36<themill>somiaj: yeah, aptitude dist-upgrade managed to do most of it when I allowed it to remove a few extra packages like chromium... (why?) and then I managed to fill /var too and then apt couldn't figure out an upgrade path at all. There was much gnashing of teeth.
21:36<zeratul976>somiaj: yes, apt-get upgrade was successful
21:36<somiaj>zeratul976: most likely a conflict, but doens't hurt to double check, also 'dpkg --get-selections | grep hold'

21:38<somiaj>zeratul976: my suggestion is to manually go down the rabbit hole and try to figure out where the conflict is, you can start by apt-get install the packages that are having conflicts and see if you get any more errors, eventually you can track down the eaxct conflict.
21:38<somiaj>zeratul976: or themill seems to suggest aptitude resolution helped in their situation.
21:38<zeratul976>somiaj: so, would that be "apt-get install kscreen"?

22:08<somiaj>that is where I would start. It takes looking at the errors and the packages in question and their dependencies. Though the error was about the libkf5screen packages, I would try to manually upgrade those first, and see why they are not being upgraded.
22:10<zeratul976>somiaj: so, if i try "sudo apt-get install libkf5screen-bin", it says it will let me do that, but in the process it will remove 212 packages. i looked at the list of packages being removed, and there are things like "kde-plasma-desktop" there. does that sound like a reasonable thing to allow it to remove?
22:12<somiaj>well I wouldn't suggest removing most of your kde desktop.
22:12<somiaj>though that is one way to go about this, remove all the kde stuff first, upgrade, then reinstall the kde stuff
22:12<somiaj>but I wouldn't remove 212 packages if I could avoid it
22:13<zeratul976>somiaj: what are my options if i'd like to avoid it?
22:14<somiaj>it is hard to say, I don't know what the conflict is and it will require tracking it down via various things. Since apt is failing to resolve some issue you need to figure out the logic.

22:20<somiaj>it might be easiest in your case just to remove all of kde, upgrade, then reinstall kde. You should just do this all from a console and disable xortg.

22:32<ivan_>Good day everyone. I am new to the channel so I'll start with : I have a s390x specific question - is this the correct channel ?
22:32<zeratul976>somiaj: so, i'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but i started to do the following: using "apt-cache show" to list the dependencies of packages, started with "libkf5screen-bin", and started installing its dependencies, and when i ran into an error with one of the dependent packages, start installing its dependencies and so on
22:33<zeratul976>somiaj: but when i get to installing libstdc++6, i get the following: https://pastebin.com/3r2q8BNG
22:34<zeratul976>somiaj: and i'm not sure what to make of it, because i'm not sure what the relationship is between the packages it mentions, and libstdc++6
22:34<themill>ivan_: if it really is s390x-specific then you'll probably struggle to find anyone on irc...
22:35<ivan_>@themill Drats :( thanks for the answer anyway

22:35<themill>ivan_: you can always try your luck....
22:36<somiaj>zeratul976: yea, unsure, I still dont' know what the actual conflict apt keeps running to is, but now that systemd is showing up and libstdc, seems more on the core. Does apt-get -f install try to fix anythign?
22:36-!-pavlushka [~pavlushka@00021abb.user.oftc.net] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
22:36<zeratul976>somiaj: nope, "apt-get -f install" doesn't do anything
22:37<ivan_>;) Here is the question : How do I ensure that an I/O device is brought online at IPL(boot) in a persistent way under stretch ? I know how to bring it online after IPL using chccwdev, but I can't find the "proper" way to do it so that is brought online at initialization time.
22:37<somiaj>zeratul976: maybe try aptitude upgrade, see if that can be more sucessful, that won't remove packages but may install some new ones.
22:38<somiaj>zeratul976: but at this time, i'm unsure, problem is when apt can't figure things out, it can can take a lot of work with thousands of packages installed
22:44<zeratul976>somiaj: "aptitude upgrade" says "Unable to resolve dependencies for the upgrade: no solution found"
22:46<josegatica>Hi bro, try with 'apt update --fix-missing' and 'apt --fix-broken install'

22:51<zeratul976>josegatica: "apt --fix-broken install" proposed to remove those same 212 packages (in addition to install new ones) that include kde-plasma-desktop
22:52<josegatica>wow, maybe you must try then.
22:52<zeratul976>yeah, in the absence of better ideas i guess i will just let it do that, and hope that i can reinstall kde desktop after the upgrade completes
22:53<themill>zeratul976: removing lots of packages as part of the upgrade between releases is common. Yes, you may want to let it remove some kde stuff and then reinstall the metapackage later. If you're keeping a log with 'script' that can help spot what was removed later

23:35<somiaj>but sounds like you have gotten thigns mostly worked out, the install should hopefully be fine now
23:37<zeratul976>somiaj: got my graphical session back :) my kde customizations are gone, but i pretty much expected that since this was an upgrade from plasma 4 to plasma 5
23:37<zeratul976>somiaj: thanks for the tips!

23:58<zeratul976>also Firefox 52 ESR (which is still the latest version of Firefox in Stretch) still uses GTK2, which looks pretty bad with Plasma 5
23:59<annadane>i'm sure you know but you don't "have" to use esr from the repository, you can download firefox from mozilla's site
