00:00<annadane>https://wiki.debian.org/Firefox is a pretty good reference
00:00<zeratul976>actually, i'm mistaken, it's built with GTK3. wonder why some things like the scrollbars look so bad
00:00<annadane>"or backport it from sid" but actually i think that pulls in a gigantic mass of stuff
00:00<annadane>or is hard to do, apparently; i've never done it
00:00<Hydroxide>or wait roughly 2-3 more months, when ESR will be updated
00:01<annadane>but that's boring (:
00:01<Hydroxide>as stable should be - it's in the word stable :D
00:01<annadane>bah. :P

00:02<zeratul976>like, whenever i would try to open a link from another application, it would try to use the system copy of firefox
00:03<zeratul976>and because two firefox instances cannot be open at the same time, it would just give an error dialog
00:05<annadane>zeratul976, do keep in mind that in system settings you can change the look of gtk applications
00:05<annadane>for me it's in "application style" but i run sid

00:08<zeratul976>oh, here's something that i've run into before when upgrading a different system to stretch, which is quite annoying

00:08<zeratul976>git (version control tool) stops working
00:08<Hydroxide>zeratul976: there are ways to choose which of several installed browsers you want to use, but the simplest in this case is to uninstall the systemwide firefox :)
00:09<zeratul976>whenever i try to pull from or clone an HTTPS repository, i get "gnutls_handshake() failed: Public key signature verification has failed."
00:09<Hydroxide>I think the repository you're using is using old crypto

00:09<zeratul976>i've googled this before, and found various hacky workarounds that tend to involve things like "download this custom build of gnutls and install it"
00:10<zeratul976>does anyone know of a more "official" workaround / fix for this?
00:10<Hydroxide>if it worked with an older version of debian but breaks with stretch, your repository is probably relying on insecure crypto for which debian no longer builds support into gnutls.

00:11<Hydroxide>maybe it's using sha1 for the server-side certificate signature?
00:11<zeratul976>Hydroxide: it's happening for github repositories. surely github know what they're doing?
00:11<Hydroxide>yeah, I don't think there's a widespread issue of people failing to validate github.com though
00:11-!-graytron [~tero@81.197.154.223] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:12<Hydroxide>though for github, most people probably use http for unauthenticated and ssh for authenticated
00:13<Hydroxide>since ssh allows public/private key crypto instead of typing or storing a shared-secret password. (a private key passphrase is still recommended)
00:13<zeratul976>Hydroxide: that doesn't work anymore - github starting redirectign http to https
00:13<zeratul976>(even for unauthenticated connections)

00:15<Hydroxide>zeratul976: I just tried git clone https://github.com/kubernetes/minikube.git on a stretch machine. works fine. maybe you have some man in the middle proxy in your environment?
00:16<zeratul976>Hydroxide: what version of libgnutls30 are you running?
00:16<themill>git+libgnutls30 3.5.8-5+deb9u3 works just fine with github on stretch
00:17<Hydroxide>zeratul976: 3.5.8-5+deb9u3.
00:17<zeratul976>hmm, yeah, that's the same version I have...
00:17<zeratul976>MITM proxy in my environment - i doubt it
00:18<zeratul976>(and why wouldn't that have been a problem with jessie?)
00:18<Hydroxide>gnutls for jessie might have accepted crappier crypto from the MITM proxy
00:18<Hydroxide>I don't know though, there's only so far we can debug this in the abstract :)
00:20<zeratul976>Hydroxide: is there a way to check for the presence of such a proxy?
00:22<zeratul976>Hydroxide: or do you have a suggestion for how to diagnose the issue further, besides applying workarounds found on the internet (which basically involve downgrading libgnutls)?
00:23<themill>zeratul976: have you removed obsolete packages after your upgrade yet? ("aptitude search ~o" should be essentially empty)
00:24-!-graytron [~tero@81.197.154.223] has joined #debian
00:24-!-graytron is "graytron" on #debian
00:24<zeratul976>themill: no, there are lots of packages there. could that be causing the gnutls problem i described?
00:24<Hydroxide>zeratul976: one way to check for a proxy is to view the cert with openssl s_client or gnutls-cli and compare to what people on other networks see. or you can try the git command from a different network. but there may be other explanations besides a proxy, that's just what I could think of quickly
00:24<Hydroxide>I'll leave you to themill and other people, I need to go to sleep shortly :) good luck.
00:24<zeratul976>Hydroxide: ok, thanks for the tips :)
00:25<themill>zeratul976: it'd be worth cleaning up the packages and their config (purging them). Just check that 3rd party packages aren't also removed accidentally. (aptitude remove ~o)

00:26<zeratul976>Here's something interesting, different machine, also running stretch, same version of libgnutls, same network ==> git works fine
00:27<zeratul976>So, we can rule out a network issue
00:27<annadane>your computer is haunted.
00:27<zeratul976>This other machine had Stretch installed clean, instead of upgraded from Jessie
00:28<zeratul976>So themill may be right about this being due to something old left over

00:38<somiaj>well if you ahve a network connection (try ping 8.8.8.8), you can manually just put a nameserver in that package. Other tools may overwrite that though

01:54<elof_>awal1: is MATE a rare DE in Debian community?
01:54<somiaj>zeratul976: apt policy librtmp1, do you have the stretch version installed, ifnot upgrade it.
01:54<zeratul976>somiaj: i've uninstalled mplayer, but librmpt1 has libcurl3-gnutls depending on it
01:54<awal1>but "setxkbmap -layout it" does works?
01:54<awal1>elof_, i do't know

01:55<zeratul976>somiaj: it shows an older version of librtmp1 is selected

01:55<return>elof, maybe you did not select it as the current layout
01:55<elof_>return: I did
01:55<somiaj>zeratul976: then upgrade this pcakge to the stretch version.
01:56-!-gr8ron [~tero@81.197.154.223] has joined #debian

01:56<zeratul976>somiaj: interestingly, apt considered that a "DOWNGRADE"
01:57<zeratul976>somiaj: but it did do it, and then i could remove libgnutls-dev0-28, and with that removed, git is working fine! :)
01:57<awal1>elof_, open terminal and run that command
01:57<awal1>and check if it works
01:58<elof_>awal1: it works, but locked to italian keyboard
01:58<somiaj>zeratul976: you probablay had jessie in your soruces.list when you ran aptitude search ~o, that package should have been found at that time.
01:58<awal1>elof_, what?

01:58<zeratul976>somiaj: i got mplayer from a different update site, http://www.deb-multimedia.org/, a long time ago
01:59<somiaj>ahh, that could explain it
01:59<elof_>awal1: I run the command, and the keyboard layout becomes Italian only

01:59<somiaj>!dmm
01:59<dpkg>We recommend against using deb-multimedia.org; these unofficial packages are known to cause many hard to debug problems. They are not in Debian either because the they are poor in quality or for legal reasons. See http://deb-multimedia.org/ or ask me about <dmm stretch>, <dmm jessie>. See also <dmm list>, <dmm mirrors>, <dmm pinning>, <why not dmm>, <dmm remove>.
01:59<zeratul976>somiaj: i disabled that update site, also a long time ago
01:59<somiaj>this is why we have that factoid, anyways just use mpv (though mplayer is back in stretch)
01:59<awal1>elof_, that is what you want eh?
01:59<zeratul976>somiaj: i needed it to play a certain video or something, once upon a time...
02:00<elof_>awal1: I want it can switch among the languages, btw which Italian layout does the command runs
02:00<return>elof, do you want the "US keyboard with italian letters"-design?
02:00<zeratul976>somiaj: anyways... glad to have that cleared up. thanks a lot for your help!
02:01<elof_>return: yes
02:01<somiaj>zeratul976: mplayer2 or mpv would have been in jessie. Anyways, things like dmm (even if you only install a package then disable a repo) can get in the way of upgrades and make thigns a lot more painful, which is why standard advise here is try to stick to debian repos as much as possible.
02:01<zeratul976>somiaj: i do try, but it's not always practical
02:01<zeratul976>somiaj: for example, for my work i need newer versions of llvm+clang than what's available in the debian repos, so i use apt.llvm.org
02:02<somiaj>zeratul976: in which case learn more proper ways to install thrid party software than via .deb packages.
02:02<zeratul976>somiaj: i thought that on debian, installing a .deb _was_ a more proper way than say just extracting a .tar.gz?
02:02<somiaj>zeratul976: anyways, yea I understand there is sometimes no choice, just be picky which repos you use, or compile stuff from source and isntall it locally.

02:03<somiaj>zeratul976: only if the .deb is properly built for the debian release you are running.
02:04<somiaj>zeratul976: there are decent thrid party repos out there, and a lot depends on the package. I would just keep track of what you use thrid party so you can remove them during upgrades.
02:05<zeratul976>somiaj: noted. i thought that disabling the update site would be sufficient, but i guess not
02:07<somiaj>no, because the depends of the packages you installed from the repo are used in apt's calculation.
02:07<somiaj>in this case sounds like a dmm put a epoc version on a package, making it seem newer than it was to apt.
02:07<somiaj>hence why apt called ti a downgrade
02:08<zeratul976>their version was 2:2.4~20150315.gita107cef9b-dmo1
02:08<zeratul976>and the stretch version 2.4+20151223.gitfa8646d.1-1+b1
02:09<zeratul976>somiaj: is there a way to list all packages installed from a particular update site?
02:09<somiaj>see the 2: in front, that is a epoch making it strictly bigger than anything in debian.
02:09<zeratul976>i see
02:09<somiaj>aptitude search can, but have to look up the details
02:09<awal1>elof_, check if it helps you https://askubuntu.com/questions/369040/spanish-accents-on-us-keyboard https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GtkComposeTable

02:12<zeratul976>somiaj: and, given a package name, is there a way to tell which update site it came from?
02:13<somiaj>apt policy packagename may help, but if it is not in your sources.list, you may ahve to look at the version number or other clues for that info.
02:13<somiaj>you can find info in /usr/share/doc/packagename, should at least contain some changelog.
02:14-!-gr8ron [~tero@81.197.154.223] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
02:15<zeratul976>somiaj: there is e.g. a kernal image in the output of "?narrow(?installed,?not(?archive(stable)))". i have a hard time imagining where i would have gotten that from besides the official debian repo
02:16<somiaj>kernel images are each in their own package, and autoremove will leave one old kernel behind.
02:16<somiaj>That is probably just the old kernel form jessie, it can sit there without causing harm.
02:17<somiaj>note stable = stretch, so you are finding anthing that is not from the stretch repo on your system.
02:17<zeratul976>somiaj: so it's recommended to remove all packages in that list (except for the kernel image) before an upgrade?
02:18<somiaj>It can help, in this case it would have.
02:19<zeratul976>somiaj: i guess, even if you don't remove them, it's a good place to look for problematic packages if you run into a problem (as i did)
02:19<zeratul976>somiaj: (i feel like removing them all would be overkill. there's stuff in there that's pretty self-contained, like atom or vscode)
02:21<somiaj>correct, in this case it was more that mplayer pulled in a libaray from dmm, not mplayer itself

08:17<jelly>murat: short answer, you can't
08:18<murat>so can i learn when the new upgrade comes?
08:18<jelly>if you try adding binary repositories for a later debian release, that will break other stuff
08:19<jelly>murat: basically, there will only be a newer upstream version available with the next debian release, debian 10, not before

08:26<murat>so i learned that debian not updating fastly but very stable
08:27<jelly>testing might be very stable today and very breaking tomorrow
08:28<murat>so the last question
08:28<murat>any type of debian rolling distro?
08:28<DusXMT>murat: There is sid/unstable, but it's definitely not advised for beginners
08:28<DusXMT>Since things _will_ break
08:29<murat>but im not beginner, i used ubuntu, mint arch fedora many times
08:29<murat>i can handle it i think
08:30<murat>ok ok
08:30<murat>i stay in stable version
08:30<murat>no risk

17:55<hark>snapshot.debian.org has all packages, but you would have to download complete packages to calculate the file checksums
