01:57<Eljotto>I'm on a fresh debian install and I see that this fancy launcher (alt+f2) in plasma works incorrectly now. Earlier, I pressed alt+f2 and started typing name of the program, and it showed me a list of possible entries
01:58<Eljotto>for example, I would type "kon", and on top of the list I would see "konsole", just need to press enter and done. Now, it first shows me already opened windows, aka - I type "kon", but instead of "run konsole" I have already opened instance of konsole, and clicking enter takes me to it
01:58<Eljotto>which is inefficient and I hate it

02:17<n00b4326>Eljotto: I didn't even think about looking at RAM...that seems obvious...I heard my laptop's fans kick on and looked at the CPU which was ramped up...didn't even think to look at the RAM, I'll have a look...thanks for the suggestion!
02:18<n00b4326>Eljotto: if you don't mind me asking, how much RAM do you have on your Debian box/VM? I allocatted the suggested 1GB from the Debian user guide
02:19<Eljotto>n00b4326, I don't run in a vm
02:19<Eljotto>1GB seems too small. Fine for minimal install, but not for GUI

05:14<petn-randall>ksyd: "no" to the last three questions. If that is a device that doesn't move, setting up /etc/network/interfaces is the easiest way. See 'man interfaces' for details. Your line will likely be "iface eth0 inet dhcp" if you need dhcp.
05:15<nex_necis>ksyd: pardon, i am at work and i am kinda slow to answer. dhclient is quite simple, you only have to use: "dhclient interfacename" and he will obtain address and configuration. Is good for the first boot, after you can use interfaces file, network manager, wicd or what you want. There is also the manpage for dhclient that is a good reading
05:16<ksyd>pentn-randall: I don't really care if that's dhcp, I care for it to work "iface eth0 inet dhcp" if I have a static ip? the wiki says that I'll have to write "iface eth0 inet static" in that case. What do you think?

05:17<ksyd>nex_necis: Will "iface eth0 inet dhcp" work if I have a static ip?
05:18<petn-randall>ksyd: If you want to set it up statically, you have to provide all details by hand. If you've got a running DHCP server in your network, setting it manually would be bad because the DHCP server could hand out conflicting IP addresses.
05:19<ksyd>petn-randall: yes, I want a static one, there's no option for me here. I just don't know what tool to use to set it up correctly, and what tool is available by default in debian core.
05:19<petn-randall>ksyd: "dhclient eth0" does the same as "iface eth0 inet dhcp" in /etc/network/interfaces would do, but the latter will be persistent across reboots.
05:19<nex_necis>ksyd: i think is good if you read this article: https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration#Setting_up_an_Ethernet_Interface
05:20<petn-randall>ksyd: As I said, have a look at "man interfaces", and "iface eth0 inet static" with a couple of lines with the settings will be all you need.
05:21<ksyd>nex_necis: & petn-randall: thank you. I understand how to edit /etc/network/interfaces file. The question is will the internet be on every time after reboot?

10:02<fortranwarror>or put in a *very* safe place

12:07<vrd1>Because I'm having a strange problem with a backup script.
12:07<somiaj>Do you mean a file? There is a difference, overwritting the file should modify the data on the current location the file lives on the filesystem, deleting the file, then writting a new one may find a new location to put the file (thus the old file is kinda hidden on your drive, but unallocated -- it could be written at a later date).
12:08<somiaj>vrd1: provide more details, and hopefully it is for debian, as that is what we support here (not just linux in general)

12:13<vrd1>somiaj: when tar-ing the directories it should just directly overwrite *without* using additional hdd space. But my actual problem now is, I'm getting errors from the script in the host 10.0.1.10 saying "not enough disk space left", either from gzip and from rsync.
12:13<vrd1>somiaj: and I don't know why.
12:13<vrd1>The script has been working for months already; this problem just began 5 days ago.

12:15<vrd1>jelly, jhutchins: by any chance here?
12:17<vrd1>somiaj: any ideas by chance?
12:18<somiaj>vrd1: correct, but rsycn will only have to transfer the files that have changed, and so if you have the space on the backup machine, having the backup untared can make transfering quicker. For example lets say only one file changes. You have to create 3 full tars, this takes time, then you have to transfer the whole file, this takes time, and so on.

17:07<mpli>I have set up dnsmasq but my DHCP-Replies don't reach my client
17:07<mpli>I'm trying to setup a dhcp-server on a Banana Pi R1. According to tcpdump I receive the DHCP-request from the client on the correct lan-port and on the bridge as well es on eth0.102. dnsmasq answers but it does not reach the lan-port, but arrives at the bridge and eth0.102 it's a virtual bridge configured on the device and there is also a VLAN configured. has anybody an idea how to solve this?

19:50<iStrive>same 4 entries on wlan0 for inet6

19:51<ais-admin>maybe the detection is failing cause its still looking for the non-existant bond0 interface
19:52<iStrive>now I'm totally lost!
