10:02<teatime>Grik: that sounds like a really bad plan, my friend.
10:03<Grik>How come?
10:06<teatime>drives in a raid5 should have similar performance charactaristics. raid5 has a few drawbacks/concerns I'd have to discuss individually. probably something simpler and saner would serve your needs just as well ...
10:06<teatime>If you would like to describe your intended/typical use for this system/drives, or describe which peformance or reliability or whatever aspects of the storage you are wishing to maximize, I will tell you what I would configure for it.

10:11<teatime>and remember, RAID isn't backup, it can't protect you from filesystem corruption, operator error, etc. ... you'd probably be better off with two storage servers, one running 2x 1TB in RAID1, and one running 2x 2TB in RAID1, and backing at least one up to the other :)
10:12<lavamind>hrm, you can use dissimilar disk sizes with raid10 ?

11:56<grawity>huh? csh and bash are *very* different
11:57<daruk>I know.
11:57<grawity>(I guess if you wanted data portability between BSD and Linux, you'd have to use ZFS?)
11:58<daruk>In NetBSD you have a real csh, in FreeBSD the call it csh (but it's bash in reality). FreeBSD is confusing everything, they want/need to make their own <censores> :(

11:58<daruk>But back to the topic, for yang .
11:59<yang>So I guess with CONFIG_UFS_FS_WRITE is not set I cannot really use UFS in write mode ?
11:59<grove>I've just upgraded my laptop to Stretch (finally), but it has libaudcore3 in version 3.7.2-2, and therefore won't allow me to install audacious, where might I have gotten that strange version? It's been years since I stopped using deb-multimedia, and according to judd it's newer than what's in jessie-backports (that was listed as a source before the upgrade)
11:59<daruk>yang: I guess, as mentioned in the NetBSD wiki article, you need a self-compiled kernel with the CONFIG_UFS_FS_WRITE value set to y (yes).

18:12<b17>i don't even use kb or mouse settings in xorg configs anymore, just let it detect the right hardware.
18:12<notgiven>Are you saying if I comment out everything in the xorg config regarding the mouse and keyboard it will fix itself?
18:14<b17>nah, i never said that, but the general idea latelt seems to be to let X detect as much as possible, I only assign a driver in the pointer-catchall or whatever it is called.
18:14<notgiven>good, I was hopeing it wasn't that easy
18:14<notgiven>anyhow, the xorg config was generated by nvidia-xconfig
18:16<notgiven>the log file talks about something called hotplugging, and says that anything useing drivers x or y will be disabled
18:16<notgiven>then it disables my kb and mouse
18:17<b17>notgiven: yeah it is probably like 3 pages with serverlayout and a lot of other sections? The way to do it now is with small files in /etc/xorg.conf.d
18:17<b17>*/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
18:18<notgiven>oh yeah thats the new system that lets you break the configs into seperate files right?

18:40<ap4lmtree>hi
18:40<ap4lmtree> when making file names such as in linux, is it bad form to make file names with spaces or does it matter , like should "_" be used instead of space?
18:45<notgiven>what do you intend to use the files with?
18:45<notgiven>if their just personal files (word documents, pictures) you can do whatever you want
18:46<notgiven>if you intend to use them with a program or whatever, you can still you spaces you just have to use forward slashes in the path
18:46<notgiven>but because of this it makes it easier to just use _ and avoid confusion

18:54<supaman>Vaan: this is not a problem on any modern operating system, but to be compatible with old OS's and badly made programs that implement their own file system access then using underscore (or whatever) instead of space is a good idea (but completely obsolete, can't think of a single program that still has a problem with it)
