02:02<keantoken>257MB sounds like the size of the flash drive I used to update this board's BIOS. But that's a USB drive.

09:27<dpkg>[contrib] Debian packages that contain <DFSG>-compliant software, but have dependencies not in main (possibly packaged for Debian in non-free). To get contrib packages, add lines like "deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ [stretch|buster|sid] main contrib" to your /etc/apt/sources.list, then «aptitude update». Also ask me about <non-free>, <contrib list>.

11:27<duclicsic>you are escaping the spaces so the shell doesn't interpret them as the end of an argument

20:29<glue-ess>Hello everyone, I am trying to install stretch net installer on a DELL Latitude CPx J650GT but hit a snag when the NIC detection fails. It is a PCMCIA NIC which doesn't seem to be initialized / assigned any resources by yenta_socket and I can't seem to figure out how to force it. In another Laptop, the very same NIC is detected and configured by the very same CD, so the issue seems to be with LaP
20:30<somiaj>does your nic need special firmware to work with linux?
20:31<glue-ess>...top itself. It uses a Texas Intruments "PCI1225" controller, which is initialized to IRQ11 and seems to be working OK. Card insertion / removal messages are found in dmesg output, but nothing else. No IO or IRQ assignments are logged and notzhing shows up in /rproc
20:32<glue-ess>It is supposed to be a NE2000 clone, and it is detected OK in another laptop, with the same debian CD, so it doesn't seem to need anything special.
20:33<glue-ess>I can manually modprobe the pcnet_cs driver, which doesn't complain, but also doesn't work.
20:33-!-manuelschneid3r [~manuelsch@p200300D863CCC7669BB05B1284D6761F.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
20:34<somiaj>Well the netinstaller has a functional base system on it, you could skip the whole network stage and install a base system, then worry about getting the network card working.
20:34<somiaj>I don't recongize that card, so unsure the best way to get it working in debian.
20:34<glue-ess>I also tried a 3com OfficeConnect card, and a PSION Gold card, but neither of these shows any different result: the insertion message is logged in dmesg, and nothing else happens. It seems like the system doesn't even try to initialize them at all.
20:35-!-CEP-2015-Jessie [~cep2015@181.111.2.250] has quit [Quit: Me jui]
20:35<glue-ess>The OfficeConnect card does work on that laptop in that slot under Windows, so it _could_ work, anyway.
20:37<somiaj>I would get the actual chipset of the card from lspci, and look it up and see if it has linux drivers.
20:38<glue-ess>It does have Linux drivers, and they work - just not on that partcular laptop. As said, the card worrks on another (newer) laptop.
20:38<glue-ess>In the very same stretch installer.
20:39<glue-ess>That is what puzles me, and the fact that the pcmcia subsystem does the same nothingness on every card I insert, not just that one.
20:39<glue-ess>But only on this Laptop.
20:39<mnuhmnuh>sounds like the same reason i install from usbkey or dvd these days. others prefer netinst though.
20:40<glue-ess>Sadly, that laptop cannot boot from USB. :()
20:40<mnuhmnuh>netinst on cd/dvd?
20:40<glue-ess>It's an ancient device, final BIOS is from 2003 (which I installed hoping that might help, but doesn't).
20:41<glue-ess>yes, netinst on CD
20:41<glue-ess>OH, should I write in german here?
20:42<glue-ess>The other Laptop assigns IRQ 3 to the NIC, I disabled the CO and LPT ports on the dell, but that didn't help either.

23:09<glue-ess>mnuhmnuh: yup, connection is working (can ping the router), just trying to figure out the interrupts of the serial ports.
23:10<PodzimekS>every way, wich i know from windows ...
23:10<somiaj>PodzimekS: usually when you select in putty it is automattly coppied, then just paste wherever.
23:10<glue-ess>I'm feeling uneasy with devices sharing IRQs with serial ports (which is a modem).
23:10<mnuhmnuh>what're serial ports? # holy 20th century, Batman.
23:10<somiaj>PodzimekS: are you running putty and xchat in xorg? If so then middle mouse button pastes (but I think it is strange to use putty in debian, since you can just use ssh from a terminal)
23:11<glue-ess>Linux handles copying a little differently than windows, at least up until sarge it did?
23:11<somiaj>PodzimekS: but in windows just selecting the text should automatcally the text, then just paste it with ctrl-V, if this isn't working, check the putty options for how select works
23:11<glue-ess>mnuhmnuh: yes, it gets even better: It will be used as fax modem. That's why I wouldn't want it to share IRQs with anything, faxing is brittle anyway.
