04:26<cef>ok, the opengl libs are there at least, but still no renderer listed. You might need to reboot at this point (sorry)

04:28<JustBrowsingAround>no biggy, just a reboot. It's not like I'm going for a world record for longest time without rebooting in debian or something lol Be right back

04:30<JustBrowsingAround>Thank you so much!
04:32<cef>welcome!
04:32<The_Seeker>is Debian stable viable as an every day desktop OS? I sometimes feel I'll be missing out by using outdated packages
04:32<cef>glxgears from a console will tell you the framerate you're getting
04:33<JustBrowsingAround>60 fps but I'm doing a bunch of other stuff that might effect it tbh
04:35<JustBrowsingAround>The_Seeker: I'm no expert but it works for the most part for me personally. If I ever need a newer package for some reason (IE a newer version of dungeon crawl) I just grab what I want from another repo.
04:36<The_Seeker>JustBrowsingAround: makes sense I guess - and from what I understand installing Firefox Quantum is relatively painless

11:53<somiaj>I think libinput changed this a bit, for some reason I think xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is the old non libinput style, but it is needed one some touchpads.
11:54<somiaj>yea that package depends on libedev2, the old input method, hence why it usualyl isn't installed, as libinput is teh modern replacement (though as mentioned it won't work on all devices as well as the old libevdev support)
11:54<somiaj>so it maybe worth looking into libinput and seeing if there is a more proper way to deal with touchpad issues within libinput and not drop back to libevdev

12:20<b17>libinput10 also depends on libevdev2 so adding synaptics was just one pkg for me
12:20<b17>works good
12:24<somiaj>ahh, didn't realize libinput also used libevdev.
12:25<somiaj>I just know the switch happened slightly before the stretch release, but since I don't use touchpads, adn just a simple mouse, I didn't notice any difference.
12:26<b17>i went back to evdev for mouse also, libinput in stretch just doesn't cut it
12:28<wget>Hi guys. I want to install a Debian 9 server but I want to tweak some commands for which there is no option in the ncurse based installer. i.e.: I want to tweak the algorithms used by cryptsetup and tweak the type of LVM logical volume I want to have. Do you know what is the recommanded time in the ncurse installer to do such tweaks? Or do I need to apply my changes manually using a CLI then run the installer? Is there any low level installer out there? What do you
12:28<wget>recommand me?
12:29<wget>(I'm an Arch Linux user and not very used to the Debian world when it comes the time of install :p )
12:30<somiaj>have you tried the expert mode of the installer?
12:30<somiaj>you could also precreate all the cyrptsetup and just configure the installer to use it
12:30<somiaj>you could hit alt-f2, and have a limited shell to do things in during the installer.
12:30<somiaj>Or use a live system + debootstrap and have complete control of the install (though you have to things manually)
12:32<wget>somiaj: Hum. Indeed I haven't checked the menu properly. There is an advanced installer with a list of things such as "Configure keyboard" and a bit below the list "Execute a shell"
12:33-!-arto [~arto@dsl-hkibng21-50dc52-38.dhcp.inet.fi] has joined #debian
12:33-!-arto is "realname" on #debian
12:33<wget>Hum. Ok this is busybox and ash :-/
12:33<somiaj>in the expert installer you can kinda move around the installer and skip steps, and do the steps you need, though mostly you want to do them in order. Though as I said, you can manually create the whole partition table, lvm, cryptsetup before even using the isntaller, then just tell the debian installer to use what was created.
12:33<wget>hum ok. how am I able to do this?
12:34<somiaj>though if you have famialrity with the cli and manually doing things, debootstrap isn't that difficult, the script automatcally isntalls the base system, then you just have to make it bootable
12:34<wget>how can I launch the installer when I have configured everything by hend?
12:34<somiaj>you would have to use a live system or your current arch install, or something that has tools you need to precreate the partition table. I find the installer's shell to limited and prefer a full live system.
12:35<somiaj>you launch the installer the same. You can skip the format drive part, and just go to the part where you tell the installer what partitions to use. such as /, /home, /boot, etc
12:35<mnuhmnuh>wget: you really ought to go through the whole thing a few times if you're unfamiliar with it. once you're comfortable, ...
12:35<wget>indeed, even the bootloader needs to be tweaked for my use case (add initramfs + copy grub to the second raid1 in case of failure + sshd dropbearsupport)
12:35<somiaj>you may find just using debootstrap from a live system the prefered way since you have so many tweaks.
12:36<somiaj>Basic approach. 1) create the partition table, lvm, cyptsetup. 2) mount it, 3) debootstrap a base install to it, 4) chroot into your base install, and then manually configure everything (including fstab, installing a kernel, configuring and installing grub, and so on)
12:37<wget>somiaj: ok thanks for the tip. I'm checking out this approach.

15:12<nsuchy>Hi
15:13<nsuchy>I have been reading over all of the documentation to start contributing to Debian and have a few questions. First what type of IDE / Editor / Development Enviroment do most people contribtuing to Debian use? Second are there language style guides put out by Debian that I should read before I start writing code?
15:15<bremner>nsuchy: most contributions to debian are not "writing code", really
15:16<bremner>nsuchy: what sort of contribution were you thinking of?
15:16<nsuchy>I'm not sure yet, I'm just getting started with trying to involve myself with the Debian community. I've generally worked with higher level code (web app developmet) although I want to try something new and help out with lower level stuff.
15:17<nsuchy>So fixing bugs in Debian packages, etc.
15:17<bremner>ah. Well, whatever debian based developement env works for you then. Coding style would typically be driven by upstream

16:02<wget>somiaj: Ok back. System installed (deboostraped) properly according to my needs. I made this from Arch, this was actually easier (espacially for the fstab generation and to come back and forth the chrooted env).
16:02<wget>I'm just experiencing an issue. On arch, we just need to add initcpio modules in the file and run mkinitcpio and this is done: the initramfs env has cryptsetup + lvm support.
16:02<wget>With Debian, I see this is a bit "different" since the initramfs implementation is not the same: https://unix.stackexchange.com/a/268908/146454 Do I need to add lvm+crypt support manually or everything comes bundled on Debian?
16:03<wget>I'm just asking because I don't see any lvm module for initramfs on my system and /etc/initramfs-tools/modules is basicallty empty :-/

21:04<dpkg>Clonezilla Live is a live CD based on Debian, providing disk/partition cloning functionality similar to Symantec Ghost. Basically a front-end to <partimage>, <partclone>, <ntfsclone>, sfdisk and others. http://www.clonezilla.org/ See also <based on Debian>.

22:17<aidalgol>Even after a reboot, I get a virtual console login prompt, not a display manager.
22:20<somiaj>I don't use display mangers so not familar with the specifics. So you have display managers installed, but none are being used?
22:20<b17>aidalgol: you can check systemctl get-default, and systemctl status display-manager
22:21<aidalgol>get-default says just "multi-user.target". the status command reports http://paste.debian.net/1023505/
22:22<b17>yeah you might need graphical.target
22:22<somiaj>I do see mention of a package called desktop-profiles that may help with this, maybe install or dpkg-reconfigure that package and see if it gives you an option to set the default display manager.
22:22<somiaj>though sounds like b17 is onto it, the target is only multi-user not graphical.
22:23<b17>i sure don't understand but that is what has worked for me

22:26<somiaj>targets are systemd's version of run levels
22:27<somiaj>and yes you are right, you need a graphical target for systemd to launch a display manger
22:30<aidalgol>Thanks, trying that now.
22:31<b17>rhymes with magical
22:32<aidalgol>OK, now it boots to a grey screen with the X cursor in the centre. No login prompt. No desktop environment.

22:49<somiaj>well you could go back to the multi-user target then just try startx, this should give you gnome if it is setup as default
22:49<somiaj>from there you could try to debug gdm3. Though unsure why it isn't just working.
22:49<b17>lightdm is the only one i have used, but i don;t think it does rootless x or wayland.
22:51<b17>either could be an issue i guess?

22:58<aidalgol>Could it be a device-specific bug? I'm on a cubox-i, which is an ARM device.
23:00<b17>i always put the user and the display manager in video group, but i don;t know if that will help. You can turn off wayland in a config somewhere for gdm3
23:00<somiaj>aidalgol: it could be an issue with the display driver, so yea. But not positive. Problem with lots of the vetrans here is we mainly use cli stuff and not much of the new graphical tools.

23:01<aidalgol>The xorg log looked fine.
23:03<mnuhmnuh>fwiw, i've seen others mention wdm is a fairly compliant/benign *dm. maybe worth a try.
23:03<aidalgol>The cubox-i uses a i.MX6 chipset, so whatever GPU that has.
