00:52<annadane>joskobroz, you can actually run both if you want, you just need to figure out what to do with configuration folders

01:17<ryouma>just looked up umatrix. looks like effort.
01:17<annadane>it's effort because the web sucks
01:17<annadane>and that's literally the only foolproof way to do it
01:17<annadane>because the advertising industry is very toxic and does whatever it can to get around privacy enhancing software
01:18<ryouma>ah for the days of ftp and email (before cantor and seagal)
01:19<ryouma>actually i don't get ads with ublock origin. so umatrix is more for privacy?
01:20<annadane>umatrix can do more than ublock origin can
01:20<annadane>like block scripts and so on
01:21<annadane>it depends on what you want. ublock origin is mostly fine, it depends on how much fine grained control you want
01:22<mnuhmnuh>annadane: ah, so google is evil. i do agree "advertising industry" is, but i'd include anything incorporated. G's just less rancid than their peers.
01:23<mnuhmnuh>not on topic, sry.
01:24<annadane>for what it's worth i don't use umatrix

07:19<LabMik>it doesn't appear in lsmod so I think it is statically builds with the kernel

12:04<blu>hi guys. I'm running debian 9 on AWS with a few webworkers (apache + php in front of a haproxy), while sharing images in orignal size to be rendered via NFS. rendered images are then stored locally. I migrated from a debian 8 setup on another server and used the exact same NFSv4 settings for both client and server. We are now experiencing very slow access to NFS (each read / write takes around two seconds). Here are our nfs
12:04<blu>settings: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/c232ae75/

12:06<blu>as in the NFS server stores the original images, which are fetched by webworkers (apache + php-fpm), the images are there minified and stored on a local disk of the webworker. We only share original size images via nfs, the code and rendered images and so on all come from the local disk of each webworker.

14:17<annadane>but if you have a current machine with internet access you can likely just apt update && apt upgrade to upgrade your packages
14:17<arto>Dan: go to debian.org
14:18<annadane>when debian *10* gets released then you will have to change your sources list, read release notes, make backups etc. point releases are more minor.
14:18<Dan>i just did apt upgrade 2 days earlier.when was fhe release got released??
14:19<annadane>if you're on debian 9 just make sure you check for updates and install them and you're fine. with the small exception that it's a good idea for people to update their installer images, even if you have the net install it won't grab all the latest stuff due to (i think) ABI changes

14:22<annadane>well if you want to totally start from scratch you can but i'm trying to say you don't have to
14:23<petn-randall>Dan: Again, if you install Debian 9 and update, you have the same packages as 9.5. No need to wait, no need to do a fresh install.
14:23<annadane>point releases are mostly important for people who don't have internet access. they can download the updated point releases, with the updated packages, and run their debian system offline. for people with access to the internet it doesn't matter if you started at 9.0 or 9.1 or whatever, just keep your packages up to date via apt upgrade or dist-upgrade
14:24<petn-randall>Dan: The number behind the dot is only relevant for the CD/DVD images.
14:24<annadane>except that it's a good idea when there's a new point release to replace the old one on your install medium with the new one, sometimes
14:25<annadane>and that's the case for 9.4 -> 9.5
14:25<Dan>oh,now the explanation is clear dude
14:26<arto>Dan: you get 9.5, if you edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and change stretch-updates do stretch-proposed-updates, then apt update && apt upgrade

14:26<Dan>i know it is not related to debian but really in my coutry its meanung is rice donor
14:27<Dan>meaning*
14:27<arto>whatever, it's not Debian
14:27<annadane>the idea behind the net install images is packages will update themselves to the latest version (in theory) if you're installing "within" the point release; so if you wanted to install 9.5 you can in theory use the net install from 9.0 and everything will work; in practice that's not quite true
14:28<annadane>you can still use an earlier net install but it's probably a good idea in that case to do a minimal install (without desktop) and upgrade your packages, then proceed with installing what you want
14:28<Dan>for debian 10 it wont work ,yes??
14:28<annadane>debian 10 is an entirely new release so you'd definitely want to just replace it when the time comes
14:29<Dan>Yes man you are absolutely right
14:29<annadane>so because the kernel changed from the 9.4 installer to the 9.5 installer using the 9.4 net installer will not automatically pull in the newer kernel, you'd have to upgrade that

14:30<Dan>great man, a huge thanks to you
14:30<Dan>will debian support nvidia gtx 750 ti if i put it into my pc?
14:31<annadane>sure
14:32<Dan>will it support equivalent to windows or less?
14:32<annadane>hah. well. that's a whole other can of worms
14:32<annadane>nvidia... is not terribly open source friendly. i'd say "less".
14:32<annadane>you have a choice. use the free nouveau driver, or install the proprietary nvidia one
14:33<annadane>both suck and are terrible options
14:33<arto> more than amd, or has than changed?
14:33<Dan>then which gpu to go? best gpu for linux distros
14:33<annadane>intel or amd, as far as i know

19:01<Tjips>Hi. My system just completed the upgrade to Stretch 9.5, and steam's fallen over. It's asking for the libGL.so.1 32-bit library, but following the instructions on the debian wiki for nvidia drivers doesn't resolve the issue. Apt (apt-get) can't resolve the package libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 with the ":386" suffix. Does 9.5 have a different procedure for installing the nvidia drivers, or am I missing something obvious? Thanks
