03:07<zxq9>It's a sort of weird key these days. If you need it you need it constantly, but for probably 99% of people (even coders) it just never becomes true.
03:07<zxq9>At the moment I'm doing something where I have to type strings of all caps, then normal stuff, then strings of all caps, then normal stuff, etc. Just noticed how annoying the shift+capslock thing is.
03:08<zxq9>But whatever. When I'm done I probably won't use it again for ages.

04:51<gj3rmund>the ssh connection ?
04:52<gj3rmund>i use putty to ssh into it
04:53<sarnold>I suspect you're looking for something like screen or tmux

05:56<grawity>that's something the nginx packager decided to add (for whatever reason), so whether it's customizable or not is also up to the nginx packager
05:56<themill>half the attraction of systemd is avoiding s-s-d
05:56<grawity>the *general* way of customizing systemd .service files is a) by overriding them completely, or b) by overriding the specific settings (like the whole ExecStart=) via /etc/systemd
05:57<grawity>some service unit files still read /etc/default and use ${environment_variables} from it
05:57<grawity>but if that line doesn't use any $ variable expansions, then you know it's all-or-nothing

07:44<arto>annadane: have no idea what has caused that

07:47<annadane>idk, maybe for some bizarre reason they changed it, but on stable it seems unlikely
07:48<arto>annadane: in list 'add new...'. pulseaudio plugin shows blue circle, but on the panel it is black speaker
07:48<arto>for me anyways
07:50<annadane>"pulseaudio volume control" in the panel is a blue circle. but there's another one called pulseaudio volume control which instead of the swirly icon, is a red x on a white background (aka "not found")
07:50<annadane>the former can be added directly via "add items" or whatever it's called, the latter though "add launcher" and adding it from the launcher, which was the way i normally did it
07:50<arto>annadane: like I said, for me it is black speaker, perhaps depends on the icons installed
07:50<annadane>not like it matters, it's a minor issue
07:51<annadane>well, i think i installed the same things, xfce4, xfce4-goodies
07:51<arto>annadane: yea, I sometimes wonder things that do not have much relevance
07:53<arto>and I vagualy remember one guy was asking about missing volume control for pavucontrol in xfce, we could not figure it out

10:52<blast007>do 'lspci -nn' so it will have both the PCI ID and the device name/type
10:58<DrZaius>http://paste.debian.net/1034640/
10:58<blast007>sounds like that system may actually have a realtek wifi chipset
10:58<blast007>https://uk.hardware.info/product/423819/medion-akoya-e4241-30024169/specifications mentions a RTL8723BS

11:02<blast007>!RTL8723BS install
11:02<dpkg>For Debian 8 "Jessie" systems, requires Linux 3.19 or later (ask me about <bdo kernel>). «apt-get install build-essential git && apt-get -t jessie-backports install linux-headers-`uname -r|sed 's,[^-]*-[^-]*-,,'` && git clone https://github.com/hadess/rtl8723bs.git && cd rtl8723bs && make && make install && depmod -a && modprobe r8723bs».
11:02<DrZaius>so im installing jessie... it should be in the kernel already if im reading the rtl8723bs install msg correctly, right?

11:03<blast007>no, it's an out-of-tree driver, meaning it's not part of the normal kernel source (at least at the time that factoid was written)
11:03<arto>propably stretch
11:03<DrZaius>i mean, im installing stretch... not jessie
11:03<DrZaius>for some reason i thought jessie was debian 9 :) im installing latest stable
11:03<blast007>you may still have to build the driver yourself, though you could skip the backports part
11:04<blast007>(since stretch already has a new enough kernel)
11:05<blast007>to be more clear, I mean just leave out the '-t jessie-backports' part for the command chain that dpkg provided above
11:05<DrZaius>I had gotten 11y using linux wihtout having to compile a wifi driver... Theres always a first i guess
11:06<DrZaius>Thanks blast007! im going to try that

11:51<kurukuru>I've got a problem with NTFS so I am trying here first, although this problem I also had in Ubuntu. Currently on Debian testing (buster). I am dual booting Windows 10 on the side for some programs I need. I have a 500mb drive with Windows 10 on it, and two 1tb drives, one with Debian on it. The second drive is NTFS with stuff on it that I want to access on both Debian and Windows. On every NTFS drive, there is a
11:51<kurukuru>"System Volume Information" folder and a "$RECYCLE.BIN" folder because of Windows. I cannot delete files, edit files, or copy paste files into the drive, even as root. But I can mount the drive, open videos/music, and take files from the drive and copy paste them into my /home/ directory or such. I have tried adding various things to fstab (although it seems to be mounting fine?) and some other commands you
11:51<kurukuru>commonly find when googling NTFS problems, and ntfs-3g is downloaded.

12:49<kurukuru>I tried that earlier. It could be I edited it wrong since I am new to fstab. I just followed google forums.
12:49<kurukuru>Usually during boot it would tell me there are duplicates of fstab and at one point the drives wouldn't mount anymore.
12:50<arto>really try to get fstab in condition, I use UUIDs
12:51<kurukuru>lol ach thanks that command worked. Is that command permanent? I remember when this first happened on Ubuntu I tried changing the permissions through root but it said in nautilus that it was rw which is weird.
12:51<kurukuru>It could be that in the graphical file manager it shows it as being read and write but on terminal it shows it as ro for some reason?
12:51<ach>!fstab
12:51<dpkg>it has been said that fstab is a file that lets the `mount' command know what mountable things (partitions, drives, etc) are in your system. Try `man 5 fstab` for more information on it. See also <label>, <uuid>.

13:38<Trident_Barclay>i want to the tor bundle
13:38<Trident_Barclay>so i cna start tor services
13:38<Trident_Barclay>not just the browser
13:39<kurukuru>ach so I spoke to soon about your command working. Basically, before when right clicking the option for "paste" was always greyed out in the NTFS drive, and the option for "delete" wasn't even there anymore, and the folders had lock icons on them. When I did your command, the lock icons went away and it showed the options for paste and delete when right clicking. But when I actually tried to copy paste or delete
13:39<kurukuru>things it gave me a permission denied error. So I restarted the computer and did /dev/sdc2 -o remount,rw again and it is telling me "permission denied" now when I do that.

14:46<dark-jedi>kurukuru, Win7 is a little annoying on my computer. I usually install Win7 first (and it comes driverless!!), and then Debian. And then I log into Debian and download the drivers I need and place them in the Downloads folder on the Win7 partition, then reload Win7 and install things.
14:46<smccabe_>oh lol. Anywho. working on getting sid on my rig, gonna try it out.

14:47<smccabe_>Trident_Barclay, Debian Sid
14:47<kurukuru>I heard a rumor that Microsoft pays mainboard companies to make it really difficult on new mainboards to install older versions of Windows like 7 so you're forced to use 10 but IDK how true that is.
14:47<Trident_Barclay>c64 had four tracks. is debian sid a sound chip too ?
14:47<smccabe_>not sure if troll....
14:47<smccabe_>https://www.debian.org/releases/sid/
14:48<Trident_Barclay>windows 10 kept suggesting i unstall win 10 on my two old laptops. when i was happily running win7. both 10 installs didnt work properly
14:48<Trident_Barclay>im not trolling
14:48<Trident_Barclay>i see

15:03<dark-jedi>Of course, just think about some of the oddball things in the first movie you could name distros after. Like the Toyota truck the pizza delivery guy was driving. Back of the vehicle said "YO"
15:03<dark-jedi>We could have a "YO" distro
