00:23<lhvf>Hi to all! I am facing a strange problem, where, on the oldoldstable Debian, Wheezy
00:23<lhvf>(yes, I know that it isn't more supported, but I have a problem with my Graphic Card to mitigate to the current stable version, aka Stretch, already explained to somiaj and annadane some time ago).
00:24<lhvf>GTK or Qt (KDE), doesn't matter, the GUI applications won't run as Root user.
00:24<somiaj>it is usally suggested to not run gui apps as root
00:24<somiaj>wheezy has gksu
00:25<lhvf>Neither the Nautilus, as occur to the Debian-Live?
00:25<lhvf>*More faciltated, I mean.
00:25<somiaj>I would not run nautilus as root, that sounds like bad juju
00:25<lhvf>*facilitated
00:26<lhvf>This is normal. I should switch then to gksudo, kdesudo, etc..
00:26<lhvf>Am I right, then?
00:27-!-user__ [~user@2402:8100:2826:ba81:baab:be34:0:2] has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
00:28<somiaj>that is what gksu or gksudo does, but in general one should nto be running gui apps as root.
00:28<bloomcup>(#G010E010M1) Why do you want to run nautilus as root?
00:28<somiaj>and after stretch those programs will no longer be available.
00:30<lhvf>somiaj: Then the prompt for applications to run as Root will be removed to Buster or higher? Or will be there a way to circumvent this? Or the running GUI application as Root will not be more a purpose anymore?
00:31-!-donofrio [~donofrio@host-232.subnet-17.med.umich.edu] has joined #debian
00:31-!-donofrio is "realname" on #debian-next #debianppc #debian
00:31<lhvf>*will be impossible, I mean. I was accustomed to Ubuntu. Debian is much more secure in many aspects.
00:32<somiaj>policykit will be configurable for such things, but running gui apps as root is strongly not suggested
00:34<somiaj>actually policykit would be the prefered method in stretch.
00:35<lhvf>*Ubuntu will follow this guideline, or already using sudo (innevitably unsecure this way), that makes it vulnerable, will still be "more open" for attacks? You know a notice about this decision in Canonical? I will self-inform me about this. Using Debian-Live, this is new to me.
00:37<somiaj>ubuntu does their own thing, they often try to be more windows like in having gui apps for root. It is possible in debian, but not the prefered way of most who use debian.
00:38<somiaj>In general you should answer the question bloomcup asked, why do you want to run naultilus as root?
00:38<lhvf>Never tried this before. First time that I was barred by the command.

00:39<sarnold>you can try ssh -X root@localhost nautilus -- note that I think running gui apps as root is Not Ideal
00:39<somiaj>sudo still works, you just have to be careful about your enviorment. I recentally ran the gui matlab installer with sudo in stretch.

00:40<somiaj>it is more likely a configuration/enviroment issue, but as multiple here have said, running gui apps, like nautilus, is not suggested as root. And it almost sounds like an XY problem, why do you want to run nautilus, and maybe learn how to do what you need from the cli.

00:44<lhvf>somiaj, bloomcup: Because I need to remove a permission form root to a limited ueser account of a text file of log to the current session user, and I used to do this always graphically, with Nautilus. Never occured the barrement before.
00:44<lhvf> I updated Debian, and following the system guidelines, this was inserted, or now I discovered that the running of GUI application as root is prone to be attacked.
00:44<somiaj>just use chown
00:45<somiaj>but why is the users session log owned by root in the first place, this is part of the reason running gui apps as root is problem matic, you end up with root owning stuff that your normal user should own.
00:46<lhvf>I will learn to stay expert in to only do this via cli. I would rather prefer to do this with Nautilus.

04:13<somiaj>but I haven't tested this, I was just wondering if you were counting the delay of the login program, not the delay of pam.

19:26<kuser>i havnt been useing debian stretch for to long but i am really starting to miss debian wheezy
19:28<mnuhmnuh>kuser: i think you're doing it wrong. to get the installer on usbkey takes "cp theiso.iso /dev/sdN" where N is where the system says it detected it.
19:29<mnuhmnuh>/dev/sdh or something.

20:47<west>hey guys i have just finished downloading a debian ISO and i was wanting to make me an installation USB and i was wondering if linux has any type of program that comes pre installed in it that i can do that with or would there be somthing that i would need to download for that task
20:48<cyberoptiq>@west - debian website should have explanations on how to do that....
20:48<cyberoptiq>check the documentation sections......
20:48<hexa->linux has dd for that
20:48<MDMA>You don't need to download anything
20:48<hexa->connect a usb stick, find it with `lsblk`
20:48<hexa->use the terminal to navigate to your downloaded iso
20:49<hexa->enter `dd if=debian-something.iso bs=4M of=/dev/REPLACEME`
20:49<cyberoptiq>you can use Brasero to burn the ISO to USB stick.....
20:49<west>cyberoptiq really i knew that i could do that with a cd but didnt know about being able to do it with a USB wow thank you happy to learn somthing new
20:50<cyberoptiq>very welcome.....
20:50<MDMA>I'm facing a strange issue with my Debian, i'm using gnome 3 and I change the default cursor theme, but when I'm using fiefox quantum and discord it came back to default, I could fix it for discord by modifying /usr/share/default/index.theme but change didin't apply for firefox, any idea on how to fix it ?
20:50<cyberoptiq>also...why burn to CD?? don't you have a DVD burner??
20:51<west>cyberoptiq i have another question when i go to /media i cannot seem to find my usb stick
20:51<west>cyberoptiq i do have a dvd burner
20:52<cyberoptiq>DVD's hold so much more....as for the USB try lsblk as hexa suggested above.....
20:52<cyberoptiq>you should see it there listed....
20:52<cyberoptiq>might have to mount it.....
20:53<cyberoptiq>the docs or even a Google search should give you the steps to doing it via USB stick.....
20:53<west>cyberoptiq i was thinking that i should be seeing it listed as well but i am not
20:53<cyberoptiq>try lsblk
20:53<cyberoptiq>sudo lsblk
20:54<cyberoptiq>see the steps hexa gave you above??
20:55<west>hexa i never used dd for anything but populating a drive with random data or zero fill never new that

20:56<west>yea

21:01<MDMA>west do you plan to use this usb on a 32 bit or 64 bit laptor ?
21:01<MDMA>but Fat32 should be fine anyway, i've always done that and worked fine for me

21:03<cyberoptiq>double there aren't any underscores instead of dashes in the command
21:03<cyberoptiq>*double-check = I meant
21:04<west>so you think that i gave the command wrong ?
21:04<cyberoptiq>or dashes where there should be underscores.....
21:04<cyberoptiq>not sure but sometimes that will trip you up.....
21:04<west>yea
21:04<cyberoptiq>it's very easy to mistakenly put dashes instead of underscores......
21:04<MDMA>if it's only for 64bit you could go for exts file system, but as I said I used Fat32 for my 64bit laptor and it worked as well
21:05<west>exts4 ? maybe
21:05<MDMA>yeah exts4
21:06<MDMA>what's your problem with fstab cyber ?
