11:59<annadane>dunno how it is performance-wise
12:00<Bailey>I thought about that, but...I'm not sure of how well it would do...and I only need Adobe for a little while longer anyway. Just working on some things for my company website and then I'll be done

12:21<annadane>i was looking for something that enabled signatures and such on paper - physical signatures, and came across that
12:23<mnuhmnuh>Bailey: apropos and apt-file can help you find possibly related pkgs.
12:23<mnuhmnuh>auto?
12:24<mnuhmnuh>iface?
12:26<Bailey>yes these are commands that various tutorials are saying to use in setting up Wifi
12:27<blast007>auto and iface isn't a command, it's part of a configuration file
12:28<mnuhmnuh>Bailey: auto and iface go in /etc/network/interfaces.

14:07<blast007>was it complaining about firmware?
14:09<Bailey>I don
14:09<Bailey>'t recall
14:10<blast007>without a network connection, the netinst ISO is only going to give you a very minimal system. If you're looking for a Gnome desktop, you'd be better off using DVD1 if you can't get a network connection during the install, or possibly trying the firmware image if it was just missing firmware.
14:10<blast007>!firmware images
14:10<dpkg>Unofficial <netinst> and DVD installer images containing non-free Debian firmware packages are available for installing Debian 9 "Stretch". See http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ and ask me about <install guide>.
14:11<blast007>(there is still some firmware that isn't included on those, such as the broadcom b43 firmware, iirc)
14:11<mnuhmnuh>Bailey: netinst assumes you'll have a working net conn. once installed. if you've bleeding edge, not yet supported wifi, you'll be stuck. there's better images to use in that case, which include firmware blobs you'll need.
14:12<blast007>there's also a DVD1 ISO that has firmware: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/images-including-firmware/9.5.0+nonfree/amd64/iso-dvd/firmware-9.5.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso

15:44<blast007>for Shotcut, you could try their AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap release from their site. They also have a 'portable' version that you just extract to a directory and run.
15:44<arjunassault>is this common in all debian that ppa doesn't exist
15:45<kenyon>!ppa
15:45<dpkg>[ppa] Personal Package Archive (see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas or <launchpad>). PPAs are either: (a) an easy way to grab packages based on nightly-builds/VCS snapshots or (b) an easy way for any idiot to publish a package of extremely poor quality (remember, you will run the maintainer scripts as root during install!). Choose your repos wisely. No equivalent exists for Debian yet. Ask me about <why not use a ppa>.
15:46<arjunassault>why not use a ppa?
15:46<arjunassault>is it possible to add ppa in debian?

18:59<danopa>abacate: maybe you are missing firmware. have you looked at the wiki?
18:59<abacate>danopa, I already have the firmware-realtek

19:00<danopa>abacate: and is your hardware realtek? and is that the correct firmware for your chip?
19:00<abacate>danopa, yes and yes
19:04<danopa>abacate: have you researched your chip and debian? some chips are poorly supported. I use a well supported usb dongle for that reason
19:05<abacate>danopa, it's rtl819eu . How to know if it's well-supported or weak-supported?
19:05<danopa>abacate: by doing research. that is really the best way to find out
19:10<abacate>Google "rtl8192eu" debian 9 ?

19:54<mnuhmnuh>i know abacate's gone, but i see remy hersbach at askubuntu got it to work w 4.9 kernel a couple of years ago. they had to build the driver from source then, but it appears it should work, unless mfgr's broken it since.
19:55<abacate>mnuhmnuh, I'm here
19:55<mnuhmnuh>welcome back.
19:55<abacate>I'm testing something that might work

20:00<mnuhmnuh>abacate: at the very least, you don't need to consider it a dud. it's been made to work reliably, in debian.
20:00<abacate>mnuhmnuh, somehow it's working now
20:00<abacate>I did this:
20:00<abacate>echo "options 8192eu rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/8192eu.conf
20:00<abacate>echo "blacklist rtl8xxxu" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8xxxu.conf
20:00<mnuhmnuh>woohoo! just keep bangin' your head on it ...
20:01<abacate>As instructed here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2392252
20:01<mnuhmnuh>abacate: now just make sure it's still there after a reboot, and you're good.
20:05<mnuhmnuh>too bad we have to use firmware blobs to get some of this !@#$ going nowadays, but working's working. close enough.

22:18<abacate>mnuhmnuh, I found that I can only connect to unprotected and wep networks
22:19<abacate>That's great, I'm sure my dongle can be used, and that I just need to fix the WPA and WPA2 connections
22:20<blast007>how are you connecting? from Gnome's normal interface?
22:21<abacate>blast007, from nm-applet
22:22<abacate>From the log, I see that, soon after the handshake, the connection is dropped with "reason 15" of NetworkManager.
22:27<abacate>Found: http://etutorials.org/Networking/Wireless+lan+security/Chapter+4.+WLAN+Fundamentals/Basic+Choreography/
22:27<abacate>This means the handshake timed out
